1. Pakistan re-elected to UN rights body with overwhelming majority

• Pakistan was re-elected to the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) on October 13, 2020 with an overwhelming majority, securing 169 votes in the 193-member UN General Assembly.
• Among the five candidates from the Asia-Pacific region vying for four seats, Pakistan secured the highest number of votes.
• Pakistan has been serving on the HRC since January 2018. With Tuesday`s re-election, Pakistan will continue as a member for another three-year term commencing on Jan 1, 2021. Since the HRC`s establishment in 2006, this is the fifth time that Pakistan has been elected to the UN`s premier body on human rights.


2. India has sent feelers for talks: Pakistan

• India has sent messages to Pakistan over the past year expressing a desire for conversation, Prime Minister Imran Khan`s adviser on national security and strategic policy planning Moeed Yusuf told The Wire in a TV interview with the Indian news portal on October 13, 2020.
• However, Pakistan would like to assess India`s intent, lest it uses a future dialogue to tell the world that all is well between the two and, implicitly, with Kashmir.


3. First British Airways flight lands in Lahore

• British Airways` first flight landed at the Allama Iqbal International Airport on October 13, 2020.
• `The first inaugural flight of British Airways flight BA-259 from London to Lahore with 194 passengers and 22 crew members arrived here on October 13, 2020,` a CAA official told Dawn.
• On arrival Airport Manager Akhtar Mirza, Deputy Airport Manager Anwar Zia, public relations officers Saad Bin Ayub and Iftikhar Ahmed Jan were among the officials of the CAA, ASF, SAPS and the British High Commission welcoming the passengers


4. PMTA takes over metro train project from Chinese firm

• The Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) has taken over the Lahore Orange Line Metro Train Project (OLMTP) from the Chinese contractor CR-Norinco through the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK), the project consultant.
• It is now completing the task to hand over the project to another joint venture of some international firms this week for its operation and maintenance. The project is all set to start its commercial operation from Oct 25.
• `After the takeover of the project, we have also placed our people at all stations, yards/depots, premises etc from Dera Gujran to Ali Razabad (Raiwind Road),` a senior PMTA official told on October 13, 2020.


5. Mehbooba Mufti set free after a year

• Indian authorities on October 13, 2020 released a top Kashmiri politician from detention more than a year after New Delhi scrapped Indian-controlled Kashmir`s special status, a move that triggered widespread anger and economic ruin amid a harsh security clampdown.
• Mehbooba Mufti had been held in detention since August 2019 alongside thousands of politicians and activists after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modis government passed legislation in Parliament that stripped Jammu and Kashmir`s statehood, annulled its separate constitution and removed inherited protecd on son land and jobs


6. EU wins tariff clearance on $4bn of US imports in Boeing case

• The European Union on October 13, 2020 won the right to impose tariffs on $4 billion of US goods in retaliation against subsidies for plane maker Boeing, deepening a record trade spat that has already prompted Washington to slap duties on EU imports.
• The World Trade Organization (WTO) tariff award, which confirms a decision first reported by Reuters on Sept 30, threatens to intensify transatlantic trade tensions just three weeks ahead of the US presidential election.


7. Humanitarian crisis feared as Nagorno-Karabakh ceasefire buckles

• Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other on October 13, 2020 of violating a ceasefire agreed three days ago to quell fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh, drawing warnings from international groups of a humanitarian crisis in the region.
• The Russia-brokered truce is buckling despite mounting calls from world powers to halt the fighting, with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and the Minsk Group security watchdog among those urging greater commitment to the ceasefire terms


8. Climate change means more weather disasters every year: UN

• In the wake of heat waves, global warming, forest fires, storms, droughts and a rising number of hurricanes, the UN weather agency warned on October 13, 2020 that the number of people who need international humanitarian help could rise 50pc by 2030 compared to the 108 million who needed it worldwide in 2018.
• In a new report released with panners, the World Meteorological Agency says more disasters attributed to weather are taking place each year. It said over 11,000 disasters have been attributed to weather, climate and phenomena like tsunamis that are related to water over the last 50 years causing two million deaths and racking up $3.6 trillion wodh of economic costs


9. North Korean leader offers glimpse of different side to character

• Often seen grinning at a missile launch or in command of lengthy official meetings, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has offered a glimpse of a different image: emotional and apologetic.
• At a weekend military parade where he showed off Pyongyang`s latest and largest inter condnental balbsuc missiles, Kim`s voice trembled momentarily as he spoke of `tears of gratitude` for his people`s efforts.


10. Shahid Afridi to coach Pakistan`s physically challenged cricketers

• Flamboyant allrounder Shahid Khan Afridi dismissed the impression of eyeing a role at the top tier in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and said that, unlike many former cricketers, he looks forward to working with junior players.
• Addressing the media at his residence after signing a Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of his Shahid Afridi Foundation with the Pakistan Disabled Cricket Association (PDCA), Afridi said he often visits the nearby academy to have meaningful exchange with youngsters
