1. NA panel okays bill for review of Jadhav`s conviction

• Amid stiff resistance offered by opposition parties, the National Assembly`s Standing Committee on Law and Justice approved on October 21, 2020 a government bill that seeks a review of conviction of Indian spy Commander Kulbhushan Jadhav, who has been sentenced to death by a military court for espionage and terrorism.
• Opposing the bill, the committee`s members from the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (JUI-F) termed the bill an NRO for the Indian spy.


2. Pakistan, Oman sign MoU for military cooperation

• Pakistan and Oman have signed Memorandum of Understanding in the field of Military Cooperation.
• The signing ceremony was held at Defence Complex in Muscat and Pakistan Ambassador Ahsan Wagan and Secretary General, Ministry of Defence, Oman Muhammad bin Nasir bin Muhammad signed the MoU.
• The MoU aims to frame the aspects of military cooperation between Oman and Pakistan in a way that enhances the existing cooperation and serves the common interests of the two friendly countries. This MoU will surely contribute towards further strengthening Pak-Oman bilateral diplomatic relations in general and military cooperation in particular


3. CDWP approves Rs8.17b to support education system under COVID-19

• Central Development Working Party (CDWP) on October 21, 2020 approved two mega projects worth of Rs 8.175 billion to support education system under COVID-19 pandemic.
• The meeting of the committee was chaired by Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Mohammad Jehanzeb Khan and was attended by senior officials from Planning Commission and federal ministries/divisions. Ministry of Federal Education & Professional Training presented two mega projects in CDWP meeting.


4. NA passes Islamabad rent control act

• Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Capital Development Authority (CDA) Ali Nawaz Awan said three bills passed by the National Assembly on October 20, 2020, will bring relief for the people of Islamabad.
• The bills are: Islamabad Capital Territory Food Safety Bill for establishment of food authority in the capital, Islamabad Rent Restriction Amendment Act and Islamabad Real Estate (Regulation and Development Act), 2020.
• SAPM Ali Nawaz Awan said Islamabad, which had over two million population, did not have any authority to check adulteration in food items


5. PA adopts resolutions against PIDA ordinance

• As major opposition parties boycotted the proceedings of the Sindh Assembly on October 21, 2020, the house unanimously adopted two resolutions for withdrawal of the Pakistan Islands Development Authority (PIDA) Ordinance and for action against those responsible for the arrest of retired Captain Safdar.
• At the outset of the proceedings, the house echoed with slogans and counter slogans by members of both sides of the aisle when Speaker Agha Siraj Durrani did not allowthe opposition to move a resolution against remarks made by Mehmood Khan Achakzai against Urdu in the Karachi public meeting of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).


6. Hekmatyar concludes Pak visit on positive note

• Hizb-e-Islami Afghanistan chief Gulbuddin Hekmatyar yesterday completed his three-day visit to Pakistan vowing to hold talks with the Afghan Taliban for peace. The Afghan leaders also thanked Pakistan for its efforts for peace in the war-torn country.
• President Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Imran Khan, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and other Pakistani leaders earlier assured full support to the Afghan peace process. The PM, in a meeting with Hekmatyar and his delegation said Pakistan was committed to regional stability and had played a key role for Afghan peace.
• Gulbuddin Hekmatyar along with a delegation had arrived in Pakistan on October 19 on a three-day visit.


7. Kyrgyzstan sets new polls as new PM reassures Russia

• Kyrgyzstan’s electoral authorities said October 21, 2020 parliamentary polls annulled over unrest would be repeated in December as acting leader Sadyr Japarov moved to assure Russia of the two countries’ strategic partnership.
• The Central Asian country’s lections commission said the fresh elections would be held on December 20, after a previous vote was annulled over political chaos that unseated a president and rattled Russia.
• Members of the Central Electoral Commission agreed to the new date unanimously, the body said in a statement.


8. Veteran naat khwaan Mehboob Hamdani dies

• Noted naat khwaan Mehboob Ahmed Hamdani passed away here on Wednesday. He was 72.
• Mr Hamdani was suffering from cancer and fighting the deadly disease for the last many months. He had also suffered a brain hemorrhage and died at Ittefaq Hospital on October 21, 2020. He is survived by two daughters and two sons.
• Mr Mehboob`s younger brother, Marghoob Hamdani, who is also a known naat khwaan, told that they both started their careers in the `60s with the Pakistan Television. `Our father was also a naat khwaan and always encouraged us to take this up. It was his encouragement that my elder brother and I devoted ourselves to naat recitation


9. US spacecraft touches asteroid surface for rare rubble grab

• After a four-year journey, Nasa`s robotic spacecraft Osiris-Rex briefly touched down on asteroid Bennu`s boulder-strewn surface to collect rock and dust samples in a precision operation 200 million miles (330 million kilometres) from Earth.
• The so-called `Touch-And-Go` or TAG maneuver was managed by Lockheed Martin Space in Denver, Colorado, where at 6:12pm an announcer said: `Touchdown declared.
• Sampling is in progress,` and scientists erupted in celebration.


10. MIT using artificial intelligence to translate ancient ‘DEAD’ languages

• System developed at MIT CSAIL aims to help linguists decipher languages that have been lost to history.
• Recent research suggests that most languages that have ever existed are no longer spoken.
• Dozens of these dead languages are also considered to be lost, or “undeciphered” — that is, we don’t know enough about their grammar, vocabulary, or syntax to be able to actually understand their texts. Lost languages are more than a mere academic curiosity; without them, we miss an entire body of knowledge about the people who spoke them
