1. FO rejects report that S. Arabia voted against Pakistan

• The Foreign Office on October 22, 2020 categorically rejected as false and baseless a report circulating in the media claiming that Saudi Arabia had voted against Pakistan at a meeting of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).
• `Pakistan and Saudi Arabia enjoy strong fraternal ties and the two countries have always cooperated with each other on all matters of bilateral, regional and international importance,` FO spokesman Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said.
• `Pakistan greatly values its relations with the brotherly Saudi Arabia and firmly rejects such malicious propaganda,` he added.


2. Nine districts account for over 3m voter gender gap

• With Lahore in the lead, nine districts in the country account for a gap of over three million between male and female voters around one-fourth of the total difference of 12.41m between the two sets of voters.
• The district-wise data of voters released by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) reveals that as many as 16 districts have a gender gap of over 200,000 with two districts of Punjab Lahore and Faisalabad accounting for a gap of over 1m voters. These 16 districts include 14 from Punjab and one each from Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, on the bright side the difference in many districts, which had high gender gap in 2018, has narrowed down


3. Ashrafi made special envoy on religious harmony, Middle East

• Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) chairman Hafiz Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi was on October 22, 2020 appointed Special Representative of the Prime Minister on Religious Harmony and the Middle East.
• Talking to reporters, Hafiz Ashrafi said Pakistan wants unity of Ummah and it has brotherly relations with all Muslim as well as Arab countries.
• He said more than five million Pakistanis are working in the Muslim countries and Prime Minister Imran Khan has assigned him the task of strengthening the country`s relations with the Middle East countries and addressing the problems faced by the countrymen in these countries


4. Users can now file content removal appeal to Facebook`s `Supreme Court`

• Facebook`s Oversight Board has announced that users can now submit appeals on content removal to the global body for an independent review.
• In May, Facebook appointed 20 people from around the world to serve on what will effectively be the social media network`s `Supreme Court` for speech, issuing rulings on what kind of posts will be allowed and what should be taken down. The list features a former prime minister, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and several constitutional law experts and rights advocates, including the Pakistani lawyer and founder of Digital Rights Foundation (DRF), Nighat Dad.


5. Israeli team visits Sudan in push to normalise ties

• An Israeli delegation visited Sudan on October 21, 2020 to discuss normalising relations following the Jewish state`s US-brokered deals with UAE and Bahrain, according to sources in Khartoum and Jerusalem.
• The one-day return trip has heightened speculation Israel could soon strike a peace deal with the Arab-led African country with which it is technically at war.
• President Donald Trump has pushed for further deals between Israel and Muslim states traditionally hostile to it.


6. Space trio returns to Earth after six months

• A trio of space travelers safely returned to Earth on October 22, 2020 after a six-month mission on the Internadonal Space Station.
• The Soyuz MS-16 capsule carrying US astronaut Chris Cassidy, as well as Russians Anatoly Ivanishin and Ivan Vagner, landed on the steppes of Kazakhstan southeast of the town of Dzhezkazgan.
• Cassidy, Ivanishin and Vagner spent 196 days in orbit, having arrived at the station on April 9. They left behind Nasa`s Kate Rubins and Roscosmos Sergey Ryzhikov and Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, who arrived at the orbiting outpost a week ago for a six-month stay.-AP


7. Self-driving shuttle debuts in Virginia

• The future of transportation arrived in northern Virginia on October 22, 2020, looking like a big blue toaster on wheels that drives itself through the region`s notorious traffic.
• State and local officials debuted the Relay system _ an all-electric, autonomous vehicle that will provide free shuttle rides back and forth from a metro rail stop to the bustling downtown district in Fairfax county.
• The shuttle is starting off small: while it seats six, only three will be allowed at any one time because of the coronavirus unless they are all members of the same family.-


8. Lankan MPs give president sweeping powers

• Sri Lanka`s parliament voted on October 22, 2020 to give President Gotabaya Rajapaksa widespread powers to appoint top officials and dissolve the legislature after an acrimonious two-day debate during which the opposition accused him of becoming a constitutional `dictator`.
• The populist leader was elected president in November last year and swiftly appointed his brother, former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, as prime minister. Gotabaya was a key defence official when his brother was president in the decade to 2015.


9. Palestinians sue Britain for 1917 Balfour Declaration

• Palestinian lawyers filed a complaint on October 22, 2020 to sue the British government for the 1917 declaration setting out London`s support for a national home for the Jewish people in Palestine.
• The lawyers filed a complaint in the occupied West Bank town of Nablus that claimed `the suffering of the Palestinians` stemmed from this document.
• The Balfour Declaration, signed by then British foreign secretary Arthur James Balfour, is seen as a precursor to Israel`s creation in 1948


10. Thai PM revokes emergency decree

• Thailand`s premier on October 22, 2020 revoked an emergency decree that had been intended to quell prodemocracy rallies despite it failing to stamp out daily protests demanding he resign and for reforms of the unassailable monarchy.
• The student-led prodemocracy movement has been gaining momentum since mid-July, with mostly young demonstrators calling for Premier Prayut Chan-O-Cha`s removal and a rewrite of a 2017 military scripted constitution.
• Some protest leaders have also issued controversial demands to reform the ultra-powerful and wealthy monarchy, whose influence permeates every aspect of Thai society.
