1. No deal with US on use of airspace, says FO

• The Foreign Office on October 23, 2021 conceded that Pakistan was discussing `counterterrorism cooperation` with the United States but emphasised that no agreement had been concluded on the use of its airspace so far.
• `Pakistan and the US have longstanding cooperation on regional security and counterterrorism and the two sides remain engaged in regular consultations,` FO spokesman Asim Iftikhar said in a statement on a CNN news report which claimed that Washington is close to signing an agreement with Pakistan on use of its airspace for military operations in Afghanistan.
• The report, CNN said, was based on information shared by the Biden administration with members of the Congress at a classified briefing on Friday.


2. Pakistan passes milestone of administering 100m vaccine doses

• Pakistan on October 23, 2021 announced that over 100 million doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered in less than nine months.
• Besides, 68m people have got atleast one dose of vaccine out of whom 38m have been fully vaccinated.
• Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan said in a video statement that with the passage of time the pace of vaccination had increased and in the current month up to 1m doses were being administered daily


3. Pakistan personal data protection bill termed vague

• The Asia Internet Coalition (AIC) has termed the draft Pakistan personal data protection bill 2021 vague in many respect and made suggestions to make it of world standards.
• In a letter to minister for IT and telecom Syed Aminul Haq the Asia Internet Coalition submitted recommendations to improve the draft Pakistan Personal Data Protection Bill 2021.
• `We are concerned that the Draft Bill`s extraterritorial application is based on provisions that are too wide and vague, which would even bring within scope foreign companies that neither operate in Pakistan nor process data collected in Pakistan,` the letter written by Jeff Paine, AIC Managing Director said.


4. US agrees to remain engaged in Pakistan`s health sector

• The United States and Pakistan on October 23, 2021 agreed to remain engaged for further bilateral collaboration in the health sector to achieve sustainable development.
• Federal Minister for Planning, Development, Reform and Special Initiatives Asad Umar held a virtual meeting with the US Department of States Coordinator for Global Covid Response and Health Security, Gayle E. Smith at the Embassy of Pakistan, Washington, said a press release issued here.
• Mr Umar briefed Ms Smith on Pakistan`s efforts against the Covid19 pandemic, including the vaccination campaign. He stressed the need to learn from collective experiences and lessons of the global Covid-19 response.


5. PIA receives second Airbus A320

• The second Airbus A320, the Pakistan International Airlines has acquired on a six-year dry lease, touched down the Islamabad International Airport on Saturday morning.
• A PIA spokesman said the aircraft landed at the airport via Egypt from the French city of Perpignan.
• The spokesman said that the national airline had also acquired a dry lease aircraft three weeks ago, which is now part of the PIA fleet. The second Airbus A320 will be formally joined the PIA fleet in the next few days


6. US, German envoys among 10 ambassadors whose expulsion ordered by Erdogan

• Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on October 23, 2021 told his foreign minister to expel the ambassadors of 10 countries including Germany and the United States who appealed for the release of a jailed civil society leader.
• The envoys issued a highly unusual joint statement on Monday saying the continued detention of Parisian-born philanthropist and activist Osman Kavala `cast a shadow` over Turkey.


7. China passes law to reduce pressure on children from homework

• China passed a law on October 23, 2021 to limit the pressure on children from homework and after-school tutoring, state media said, as the country reforms its ultra-competitive education system.
• The government has imposed several rules in recent months aimed at combating activities it considers harmful to the development of China`s youth


8. Top oil exporter Saudi Arabia targets zero carbon emissions by 2060

• Top crude exporter Saudi Arabia will aim to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2060, its de facto ruler said on October 23, 2021, days before the COP26 global climate summit.
• The kingdom, one of the world`s biggest polluters, said it would also join a global ef fort to cut methane emissions by 30 percent by 2030.
• The UN says more than 130 countries have set or are considering a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2050, an objective it says is `imperative` to safeguard a liveable climate


9. England signal title ambition as WI crumble for 55

• Eoin Morgan`s England signalled their title aspiration with a comfortable six-wicket victory against defending champions West Indies in their Twenty20 World Cup Super 12 0pener on October 23, 2021.
• Batting fireworks were expected in the repeat of the 2016 final between the sides but England made it a one-sided affair with their bowlers running amok at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
• Moeen Ali (2-17) wrecked the West Indies top order before Adil Rashid ran through rest of the line-up to skittle out the Caribbean side for a paltry 55 inside 15 overs.


10. Australia see off South Africa in low-scoring thriller

• Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade combined in a crucial 40-run stand to help Australia beat South Africa by five wickets in a low-scoring thriller in their opening Super 12 clash in the Twenty20 World Cup on October 23, 2021.
• Stoinis and Wade held their nerve superbly during an unbroken sixth-wicket stand to take Australia past their 119-run target with the win coming with two balls remaining at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium.
• Replying to South Africa`s total of 118 for nine, Australia lost three quick wickets at the top and found themselves under pressure against some accurate bowling
