1. Country`s first major mass transit project opens

• The Orange Line Metro Train, the country` first electricity-run mass transit project, was inaugurated on Sunday with the ruling PTI and opposition squabbling over the credit.
• Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar, Chinese Consul General Long Dingbin and Transpor t Minister Jahanzeb Khan Khichi jointly inaugurated the project by pressing a button, allowing Punjab Mass Transit Authority (PMTA) to start commercial operation of the train service from October 26, 2020.


2. Khyber becomes first merged district to have official website

The district administration of Khyber tribal district has launched its website to provide e-services for ensuring prompt reddressal of public grievances.
• The initiative is the first of its type by any of the seven merged tribal districts which provides access to the general public of Khyber to avail of e-services and know about the spending of public funds and execution of development schemes.
• About salient features of the website `Khyber.KP.gov.pk`, deputy commissioner, Khyber, Mehmud Aslam Wazir, told Dawn that its launch was a departure from the previous practice of concealing `administrative matters` from general public


3. Key Al Qaeda leader killed in Afghanistan

• Afghan forces have killed a top Al Qaeda militant wanted by the United States, as the government on October 25, 2020 accused the Taliban of still keeping close ties with the militant group.
• Abu Muhsin al-Masri, an Egyptian national believed to be the group`s number two in the subcontinent, was targeted in eastern Ghazni province, Afghanistan`s intelligence agency said in a statement.
• The National Directorate of Security did not provide details about the operation or when it was carried out


4. Iran deploys troops on Azerbaijan border

• Iran`s Revolutionary Guards said on October 25, 2020 they have deployed troops along the border with Azerbaijan and Armenia, following stray fire from the fighting over Nagorno-Karabakh.
• `Units of (the Guards) ground forces have been dispatched to and stationed in the region,` their commander Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour said, quoted by state news agency IRNA.
• Their mission was `to protect national interests and maintain peace and security`.


5. Treaty banning N-weapons to take effect in Jan: UN

An international treaty banning nuclear weapons has been ratified by a 50th country, the UN said, allowing the `historic` text to enter into force after 90 days.
• While nuclear powers have not signed the treaty, activists who have pushed for its enactment hold out hope that it will nonetheless prove to be more than symbolic and have a gradual deterrent effect.
• Honduras became the 50th country to ratify the treaty. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called it `the culmination of a worldwide movement to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons, according to a statement from his spokesman on October 25, 2020.


6. Modi has set date for war with China, Pakistan: BJP leader

• Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a date for war with Pakistan and China, according to a senior official of the Bharatiya Janata Party quoted by the Press Trust of India on October 25, 2020.
• The news agency said the BJP`s Uttar Pradesh chief, Swatantra Dev Singh, told a meeting of party functionaries that Mr Modi had decided when the country would be at war with Pakistan and China.


7. Hamilton overtakes Schumacher with record 92nd F1 win

• Six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton became the most successful Formula One driver of all time in terms of race wins on Sunday with a dominant 92nd career victory at the Portuguese Grand Prix.
• The Mercedes driver, who took the chequered flag a huge 25.592 seconds ahead of second-placed team-mate Valtteri Bottas, had equalled Ferrari great Michael Schumacher`s record 91 wins at the previous race at the Nuerburgring


8. Dubai introduces facial recognition on public transport

Dubai is introducing a facial recognition system on public transport to beef up security, officials said Sunday, as the emirate prepares to host the global Expo exhibition.
• “This technology has proven its effectiveness to identify suspicious and wanted people,” said Obaid al-Hathboor, director of Dubai’s Transport Security Department.
• The emirate already operates a biometric system using facial recognition at its international airport


9. First Black American among 13 cardinals named by Pope

• Wilton Gregory became the first African American to be named as cardinal by Pope Francis on October 25, 2020.
• Known as a refined diplomat, Gregory made headlines when he blasted President Donald Trump`s photo opportunity hoisting a Bible at a Washington church after police used tear gas to clear demonstrators in June.
• The 73-year-old Gregory was among 13 new cardinals named by the Pope. He was installed as the first Black archbishop of Washington in 2019


10. Lee Kun-Hee, force behind Samsung`s rise, dies at 78

• Lee Kun-Hee, the ailing Samsung Electronics chairman who transformed the small television maker into a global giant of consumer electronics but whose leadership was also marred by corruption convictions, died on October 25, 2020. He was 78.
• Lee died with his family members by his side, including his only son and Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jaeyong, the company said in a statement.
• Samsung didn`t announce the cause of death, but Lee had been hospitalised since May 2014 after suffering a heart attack and the younger Lee has been running Samsung, South Korea`s biggest company
