1. EU allocates Rs36m for quake survivors

• The European Union has allocated over Rs36 million to provide emergency humanitarian assistance to families affected by the earthquake in the Harnai area of Balochistan early this month.
• The aid will benefit over 4,500 people.
• The EU funding supports the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) in delivering immediate assistance through the distribution of emergency shelter materials and household items, the EU Mission in Islamabad announced on October 27, 2021

2. Eight embrace martyrdom as terrorist attacks rise in KP

• Eight security personnel including four soldiers were martyred and another wounded in cross-border attack, ambush and bomb explosions in different areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in two days.
• Terrorists from inside Afghanistan attempted to cross the fence along the Pak Afghan border in Kurram tribal district between the night of Tuesday and Wednesday when troops in a prompt response engaged them and thwarted their attempt, according to the military`s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).
• During intense exchange of fire, how-ever, Lance Naik Asad Ali, 24, resident of Kurram, and Sepoy Asif, 21, resident of Lakki Marwat, embraced martyrdom, the ISPR added

3. India`s top court probes spying charges against govt

• India`s top court on October 27, 2021 established a committee of experts to look into accusations that Prime Minister Narendra Modis government used Israeli military grade spyware to monitor political opponents, journalists and activists.
• The Supreme Court order came in response to petitions filed by a group of Indian journalists, rights activists and opposition politicians following an investigation by a global media consortium in July. The committee, headed by a retired judge, is expected to give its findings by yearend.
• India`s opposition has been demanding an investigation into how the Israeli spyware, known as Pegasus, was used in India

4. Taiwan has no right to join United Nations, says China

• China insisted on October 27, 2021 that Taiwan had no right to join the United Nations, after the United States ratcheted up tensions with a call for the democratic island to have greater involvement in the world body.
• In a statement marking 50 years since the UN General Assembly voted to seat Beijing and boot out Taipei, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Tuesday he regretted that Taiwan had been increasingly excluded on the world stage.
• `As the international community faces an unprecedented number of complex and global issues, it is critical for all stakeholders to help address these problems. This includes the 24 million people who live in Taiwan, Blinken said

5. World Bank halts Sudan operations in blow to coup leaders

• The World Bank halted disbursements for operations in Sudan on October 27, 2021 in response to the military`s seizure of power from a transitional government, while state oil company workers, doctors and pilots joined civilian groups opposing the takeover.
• Thousands of people have taken to the streets since Monday`s coup led by armed forces chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and several have been killed in clashes with security forces.
• Burhan has dismissed the joint civilian-military council that was set up to steer the country to democratic elections following the overthrow of autocrat Omar al-Bashir in a popular uprising in April 2019

6. Cambridge college hands over looted African bronze

• To cheers and a trumpet fanfare, a Cambridge University college on October 27, 2021 handed a bronze statue looted in the 19th century back to Nigerian officials, in the first such move by a UK institution.
• Sonita Alleyne, the head of Jesus College, gave the elaborately carved cockerel known as `Okukor` to a Nigerian delegation.
• Okukor was among thousands of African artefacts stolen from the continent during British colonial rule

7. Chinese hypersonic test like a `Sputnik moment`: US general

• The Pentagon`s top general said on October 27, 2021 that China`s recent test of an earth-circling hypersonic missile was akin to the Soviet Union`s stunning launch of the world`s first satellite, Sputnik, in 1957, which sparked the superpowers` space race.
• Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chief s of Staff, confirmed for the first time the Chinese test of a nuclear-capable missile that would be very difficult to defend against.
• `What we saw was a very significant event of a test of a hypersonic weapon system. And it is very concerning,` Milley told Bloomberg TV

• Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar quit his TV punditry job on-air on Tuesday following a heated exchange with Dr Nauman Niaz, the host of the show, while analysing Pakistan`s five wicket victory over New Zealand at the Twenty20 World Cup.
• Discussing the match on PTV Sports` `Game on Hai`, the outspoken Shoaib credited the Pakistan Super League franchise Lahore Qalandars for discovering Shaheen Shah Afridi and Haris Rauf through their Player Development Programme, which is headed by Qalandars head coach and ex Pakistan pacer Aaqib Javed

• England raced to a second successive victory at the ICC Twenty20 World Cup with a ruthless eight-wicket drubbing of Bangladesh on October 27, 2021 in the two nations` first ever meeting in the format.
• Opening batter Jason Roy marked his 50th T20 appearance by smashing 61 off 38 balls as England romped to their victory target of 125 in 14.1 overs in the Super 12 clash at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
• Roy reached his seventh T20 half-century with a straight six and put on a key second-wicket partnership of 73 with Dawid Malan, who made an unbeaten 28

• Ruben Trumpelmann led a lethal bowling show to set up Namibia`s stunning four-wicket win over Scotland in their first-ever Super 12 clash of the Twenty20 World Cup on October 27, 2021.
