1. Bizenjo set to take oath as CM today

• Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo will take the oath as chief minister of Balochistan on October 28, 2021 (today) at the Governor House as he has been virtually elected unopposed since no other candidate filed nomination papers for the top slot on Thursday.
• Five nomination papers were filed on behalf of Mr Bizenjo by the members of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) with the secretary of the Balochistan Assembly, Tahir Shah Kakar.
• No other candidate filed the nomination papers till 5pm.


2. Pakistan, Germany sign treaty for 26.2m euro debt service suspension

• Pakistan and Germany signed an agreement on October 28, 2021 for suspension of debt service of 26.213 million euro under the Debt Service Suspension Initiative (DSSI).
• The German development bank known as KfW and the Economic Affairs Division signed the agreement on behalf of their respective governments.
• The signing of the agreement coincides with the forthcoming celebrations for 60-year development cooperation between Pakistan and Germany


3. Pakistan continues to give air access to US, Congress told

• A senior Pentagon official has informed Congress that Pakistan continues to give the United States access to its airspace and the two sides are also talking about keeping that access open.
• US Undersecretary of Defence for Policy Colin Kahl shared this information with the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday during an open/ closed hearing on `Security in Afghanistan and in the regions of South and Central Asia`.
• He was replying to a question from the committee`s chairman Senator Jack Reed, who asked him to update the panel on `our arrangement with Pakistan regarding their cooperation with us in counterterrorism`. The senator referred to recent press reports claiming that Pakistan was working with the Taliban to attack the militant Islamic State group


4. Four arrested in India for celebrating Pakistan win

• Indian police have arrested three Muslim students and a teacher for celebrating the Pakistan cricket team`s crushing victory over arch-rivals India at the Twenty20 World Cup, officials said on Thursday.
• The students, originally from India occupied Kashmir, were taken into custody on Wednesday in Agra city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh for `promoting enmity` and disrupting religious harmony, police inspector Pavindra Kumar Singh said.
• The case was lodged after right-wing Hindu nationalist groups barged into the Raja Balwant Singh Engineering Technical College demanding the arrest of the three students, according to press reports


5. Sudan military leader fires six diplomats who criticised coup

• Sudan`s strongman fired at least six ambassadors, including the envoys to the US, the European Union and France, after they condemned the military`s takeover of the country, a military official said on October 28, 2021.
• The diplomats had pledged their support for the now-deposed government of Prime Minister Abddalla Hamdok. Their dismissal came hours before the United Nations Security council issued its first statement on recent events in the country, calling for the civilian transitional government to be restored to power and for those detained during the takeover to be released


6. Palestinians unveil huge mosaic at Jericho desert castle

• Palestinian authorities on October 28, 2021 unveiled one of the largest floor mosaics in the world, in the occupied West Bank city of Jericho, after years of restoration.
• Resembling a fine carpet, the vast mosaic covers 836 square metres (8,998 square feet) at the Hisham Palace, an Ummayad Islamic desert castle dating from the eighth century.
• The images, seen on dozens of panels, include a lion attacking a deer to symbolise war and two gazelles which symbolise peace, as well as delicate floral and geometric designs


7. India tests ballistic missile with 5,000km range

• India has tested a ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead up to 5,000 kilometres, the defence ministry said, in what media called a `stern signal` to China as the two remain locked in a border spat.
• The Agni-5 missile blasted off from Abdul Kalam Island off India`s east coast late on Wednesday and splashed into the Bay of Bengal.
• `The successful test… is in line with India`s stated policy to have `credible minimum deterrence` that underpins the commitment to `No First Use` [of nuclear weapons],` a defence ministry statement said


8. Facebook changes name to Meta, bets big on virtual reality

• Facebook Inc changed its name to Meta on October 28, 2021, in a rebrand that focuses on its ambitions building the `metaverse`, a shared virtual environment that it bets will be the next big computing platform.
• The name change comes as the world`s largest social media company battles criticism from lawmakers and regulators over its market power, algorithmic decisions and the policing of abuses on its platforms.
• Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg, speaking at the company`s live-streamed virtual and augmented reality conference, said the new name reflected its ambitions to build the metaverse, rather than its namesake social media service.


9. 60 countries sign up to pledge on emissions

• A group of 60 countries has signed up to a pledge led by the European Union and United States to cut emissions of the potent greenhouse gas methane, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on October 28, 2021.
• `Sixty countries joined us so far and of course we are encouraging others to join this ambition,` von der Leyen told a news conference.
• The pledge would see countries commit to slash their joint methane emissions by 30 per cent by 2030 from 2020 levels. Nigeria, Japan and Pakistan are among the countries that have joined the pledge, which is due to be launched at the UN COP26 summit, which runs from Oct 31 to Nov 12.


10. Warner roars into form as Australia outclass Sri Lanka

• Opener David Warner struck form with an attacking 65 to help Australia to their second successive victory in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup with a seven-wicket thrashing of Sri Lanka on October 28, 2021.
• Warner, who was dropped from his IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad last month after two bad games, smashed 10 fours in his 42-ball knock as Australia achieved their target of 155 with 18 balls to spare at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
• Warner and skipper Aaron Finch, who made 37, took apart the Sri Lankan bowlers with an opening stand of 70
