1. Bizenjo sworn in as chief minister of Balochistan
• Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo, after being elected leader of the house in the Balochistan Assembly unopposed by obtaining 39 votes in a house of 65, was sworn in as the 17th chief minister of the province on October 29, 2021.
• Balochistan Governor Syed Zahoor Agha administered the oath to Mr Bizenjo at a ceremony held at the Governor House. Punjab Governor Chaudhary Mohammad Sarwar, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Qasim Suri, federal minister Zubaida Jalal, founder of Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) Senator Saeed Hashmi, members of Senate, national and provincial assemblies and hundreds of other people attended the ceremony.
• It was for the first time in the history of Balochistan that people in such a large number were invited to attend the oath-taking ceremony of a chief minister.
2. `Pakistan ranked ninth among 12 countries where journalists` killers still at large`
• The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has released its annual report as per which Pakistan has been ranked ninth among 12 countries where journalists have been killed and the murderers are still at large.
• The CPJ`s 2021 `Global Impunity Index` has also found that no one has been held to account in 81pc of journalists` murder casesduringthelast10years.
• The countries with the worst records of allowing killers of journalists to go free, according to the index are Somalia, Syria, Iraq, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Mexico, the Philippines, Brazil, Pakistan, Russia, Bangladesh and India.
3. Afghan `diplomats` take charge in Pakistan
• The Taliban-appointed `diplomats` have taken charge of the Afghan embassy and consulates in Pakistan, according to officials familiar with the development.
• Sardar Muhammad Shokaib has started working as the first secretary in the Afghan embassy in Islamabad.
• Hafiz Mohibullah, Mullah Ghulam Rasool and Mullah Muhammad Abbas have been assigned to the Peshawar, Quetta, and Karachi consulates of Afghanistan.
• Shokalb would effectively be the Afghan charge d`affaires in Islamabad
4. Rules for Pakistan Halal Authority approved
• After a delay of almost five years, the federal cabinet has finally approved operational rules for Pakistan Halal Authority (PHA).
• The PHA was established under the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) through an Act of Parliament in 2016. The mandate of the authority is to promote trade and commerce in `Halal` food items, stamping halal status of the edible and certain non-edible products.
• The authority is also responsible for monitoring local market as well as products being imported
5. Natural disasters a challenge to Pakistan`s development: WB
• The World Bank has said that climate change and natural disasters pose a major challenge to Pakistan`s development, and an estimated 49 million people reside in areas that face the risk of a four-to-five per cent decline in quality of life by 2030.
• In its new report `South Asia Climate Change Action Plan 202125` released on October 29, 2021, the bank says Pakistan is increasingly exposed and vulnerable to various natural hazards, particularly floods, cyclones, droughts and earthquakes. Combined with these vulnerabilities, disasters have caused significant loss of life, economic damage and reversal of development gains over the past 15 years.
6. US hits Iran drone programme with sanctions
• The United States has issued a fresh round of Iran-related sanctions tied to an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) drone programme that it said threatened regional stability, the Treasury Department said on October 29, 2021.
• US officials, in a statement, said the IRGC has been providing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones for use by Iran-backed groups, including Lebanese militant group Hezbollah, and in crisis-hit Ethiopia.
• `Iran`s proliferation of UAVs across the region threatens international peace and stability. Iran and its proxy militants have used UAVs to attack US forces, our partners, and international shipping,` Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said
7. End mistrust to help on climate, vaccines, UN chief tells G20 leaders
• UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on October 29, 2021 challenged the G-20 leaders to overcome dangerous levels of mistrust among themselves and between developed and developing nations to try to avoid climate catastrophe as well as narrow an immoral gap on global vaccine distribution and pandemic recovery aid.
• Guterres spoke to reporters in Rome on the eve of the Group of 20 summit, whose members account for 80 per cent of the world`s GDP.
• He stepped up his recent cries of alarm that the Glasgow climate meeting, which begins Sunday in Scotland and will see participation by many G-20 leaders, including US President Joe Biden, won`t make good on promises
8. Saudi Arabia to bid to host Expo 2030 world fair
• Saudi Arabia intends to bid to host the Expo 2030 world fair, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said on October 29, 2021, part of the de facto ruler`s push to transform the kingdom`s economy and diversify it away from oil.
• The Saudi capital Riyadh has submitted a formal request to host Expo 2030 under the theme `The era of change: Leading the planet to a foresighted tomorrow`, a statement said.
• Gulf neighbour and regional business hub the United Arab Emirates, which is increasingly in economic competition with Saudi Arabia, is currently hosting the Expo 2020 world fair, which was delayed for a year by the pandemic.
9. Asif`s six spree gives Pakistan win over Afghans
• Asif Ali smashed four sixes in the penultimate over of the match to seal a five-wicket win for Pakistan over neighbours Afghanistan in the T20 World Cup on October 29, 2021.
• Set a tricky 148 to win at a noisy and colourful Dubai International Stadium, Pakistan needed 24 runs with two overs remaining and had just seen key batters Babar Azam and Shaoib Malik get out.
• Enter Asif, who took on the medium pace of Karim Janat in the 19th over by clearing the boundary over long-off off the first ball, over mid-wicket off the third ball and straight down the ground off the fifth ball
10. West Indies edge Bangladesh in thriller to stay alive
• The West Indies are still alive in the T20 World Cup.
• The defending champions beat Bangladesh by three runs in a low scoring thriller that went to the final ball on Friday, picking up the first win of their underwhelming title defence.
• Needing 13 runs o f Andre Russell`s final over to collect their own first victory in the Super 12s, Bangladesh got it down to requiring four off the last ball of the match.
