1. Nation observes Quaid`s death anniversary today
• The 73rd death anniversary of Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah is being observed on Saturday (September 11, 2021) throughout the country with reverence and solemnity.
• To mark the day, various programmes have been planned to shed light on the leadership and personality of the Father of the Nation.
• Born on Dec 25, 1876, Mr Jinnah served as leader of the All India Muslim League from 1913 until Pakistan`s creation. He served as the country`s first governor general until his death.
2. 50m people in Pakistan fully vaccinated: minister
• Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar on September 10, 2021 said more than 50 million people had so far been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in Pakistan while 20 million had received their first jab.
• On the other hand, 83 patients succumbed to Covid-19 and 3,689 more tested positive in the last 24 hours.
• In a tweet, the federal minister said: `In the early days of the vaccination campaign we had set a daunting target of vaccinating 7 crore people by the end of this year. Happy to report that 5 crore people have now received at least 1 dose
3. ECNEC approves three projects worth Rs340bn
• The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on September 10, 2021 approved three development projects at an estimated cost of Rs340 billion with a major tilt towards Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
• Presided over by Minister for Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin, the meeting was attended by Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Minister Taimur Khan Jhagra and federal secretaries
4. Govt gets $279m in spectrum auction
• Amid withdrawal of bids by three main players in the telecom sector, Ufone has obtained 9MHz spectrum in 1800-megahertz band for $279 million, allowing the company to improve its quality of service as well as expand penetration in different underserved areas.
• The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) on Friday declared Ufone as the sole winner in the auction of additional spectrum 2021.
• Briefing the media on the results of the auction, PTA Chairman retired Maj Gen Amir Azeem Bajwa said Ufone would have to deposit 50 per cent (Rs23.44 billion) of the bid amount in the government treasury within 15 days
5. US to engage with Taliban when it`s in America`s interest
• The United States would engage with the Taliban when it`s in America`s interest to do so, although it`s not yet ready to recognise the Taliban government.
• At a Thursday afternoon`s news briefing, State Department spokesperson Ned Price also said that Pakistan shared concerns of the international community on Afghanistan and wanted to protect the gains of the last 20 years.
• `There`s a distinction … between broad issues like recognition and legitimacy and practical engagement,` said Mr Price while explaining how the Biden administration plans to engage with the Taliban
6. Russia, Belarus hold massive military drills, spook neighbours
• Russia and Belarus launched massive military drills on Friday, with Nato-member Poland warning of possible `provocations` as tensions rise on the European Union`s eastern border.
• Moscow said 200,000 personnel would take part in the week-long Zapad military exercise in Belarus, western Russia and the Baltic Sea, one of the country`s biggest drills in recent years.
• The defence ministry released footage of rows of Russian warships firing artillery, military jets flying in formation and columns of tanks advancing over rugged terrain
7. Russia completes gas pipeline to Germany, alarms Ukraine
• Russia said on September 10, 2021 it had finished construction of a subsea pipeline to Germany, which could allow it to double lucrative gas exports to Europe via the Baltic Sea while bypassing and cutting off a source of income for political foe Ukraine.
• Although German regulators have yet to clear gas flows, completion of the construction stage of Nord Stream 2 means Russia has boosted its energy exporting capabilities towards Europe both from the north in the Baltic Sea and from the south in the Black Sea, where it operates the Turk Stream pipeline.
8. Kuwaiti royal convicted in Swiss forgery case
• World sport powerbroker Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah was convicted on September 10, 2021 by a Swiss court in a complex forgery case linked to an alleged plot against his political rivals in Kuwait.
• After just over a week of hearings, the Geneva Criminal Court convicted Kuwait`s Sheikh Ahmad, handing him a 30-month prison sentence, half of it suspended.
• Four other defendants three Geneva-based lawyers and a Kuwaiti aide were also found guilty and handed sentences of up to 36 months behind bars
9. France`s former minister charged over Covid handling
• Former French health minister Agnes Buzyn was charged on September 10, 2021 over her handling of the Covid-19 pandemic after investigators at a special court in Paris concluded there were grounds to prosecute her.
• Buzyn has been charged with `endangering the lives of others`, the prosecutor of the Republic`s Court of Justice said, but not for a second possible offence of `failure to stop a disaster`.
• The former doctor, who will be able to appeal the charge, attended a hearing at the court on Friday, saying she welcomed `an excellent opportunity for me to explain myself and to establish the truth`
10. Lebanon finally gets new govt amid economic misery
• Lebanese leaders agreed to a new government led by Sunni tycoon Najib Mikati on September 10, 2021 after a year of feuding over cabinet seats that has exacerbated a devastating economic collapse, opening the way to a resumption of talks with the IMF.
• The break through followed a flurry of contacts from France which has led efforts to get Lebanon`s fractious leaders to agree to a cabinet and begin reforms since last year`s catastrophic Beirut port explosion, senior Lebanese political sources said.
• There was no immediate comment from the French foreign ministry
