1. Probe into Covid `figure fudging` launched

• With a visible increase in the number of Covid19 positive cases in Punjab, some official documents have revealed that the primary and secondary healthcare department has been making fictitious entries to show less number of cases in Lahore.
• According to the latest figures updated on September 19, 2020, the province reported 130 more people tested positive for the virus during the last 24 hours, showing around 40 per cent surge in cases in Punjab as compared to those reported during the last one week or so.


2. Pak Army participates in opening ceremony of Kavkaz 2020 in Russia

• A contingent of Pakistan Armed Forces yesterday participated in the opening ceremony of the multinational military exercise, Kavkaz 2020, held at Astrakhan region, Russia.
• According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) directorate, the Exercise Kavkaz (21-26 Sep) aims at assessing ability of troops to react to various challenges and learn from each other’s experiences. The week-long exercise will commence from Monday


3. Two soldiers among four martyred in N. Waziristan

• Two soldiers and as many civilians were martyred in different areas of volatile North Waziristan tribal district on September 19, 2020.
• The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said two security personnel lost their lives during an intelligence based operation near Spelga village. They said unidentified assailants opened fire at Havaldar Tajbar Ali and Sepoy Abdur Rashid when they were on their way to a check-post.
• Havaldar Tajbar, 38, belonged to Swat while Sepoy Rashid, 22, was a resident of Parachinar


4. Swat district bags highest allocation of Rs7.78 billion in current fiscal

• Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Mahmood Khan`s home district, Swat, i.e. has received the highest allocation of Rs7.78 billion in the annual development programme for the current financial year, claims NGO Omar Asghar Foundation in a report.
• The report titled `Purse Strings and People`s Priorities: An Analysis of Development Funds in KP Budget2020-21` has dissected sectoral allocations, block funding and funds for schools, healthcare and other sectors proposed in the ADP.


5. China launches sanctions regime after US moves on TikTok, WeChat

• China on September 19, 2020 launched a mechanism that would allow it to sanction foreign companies, upping the ante in a tech war with the United States a day after Washington moved to curb popular Chinese apps TikTok and WeChat.
• China`s long-expected `unreliable entities list` is seen as a weapon for Beijing to retaliate against the United States, which has used its own `entity list` to shut Chinese telecom giant Huawei out of the US market, while also moving against TikTok and WeChat


6. US military strengthens deployment in Syria

• The US Army has announced it was stepping up its military deployment both troops and equipment in northeastern Syria despite a push to limit its presence there, a move that follows tensions with Russia in the region.
• US Central Command (Centcom) `has deployed Sentinel radar, increased the frequency of US fighter patrols over US forces, and deployed Bradley Fighting Vehicles to augment US forces` in the area, which is controlled by the US and its Kurdish allies, spokesman Captain Bill Urban said in a statement.


7. US mogul gives all $8bln fortune to charity; PM Imran calls it “true richness”

• As Irish-American business tycoon Chuk Feeney has given away all of his US $ eight billion fortune to charity, Prime Minister Imran Khan named this act a “true richness.”
• “This is what I call true richness – a liberated soul,” the prime minister said on twitter commenting on a media report of the former American billionaire’s achieving his mission of donating all his wealth during his life. The philanthropy is a subject very close to the prime minister’s heart who always proudly claimed to have collected ed the biggest donations for the expanding Shaukat Khanum Memorial Hospital founded by him.


8. Vlba makes direct distance measurement to magnetar

• Magnetars are a variety of neutron stars — the superdense remains of massive stars that exploded as supernovae — with extremely strong magnetic fields.
• A typical magnetar magnetic field is a trillion times stronger than the Earth’s magnetic field, making magnetars the most magnetic objects in the Universe.
• They can emit strong bursts of X-rays and gamma rays, and recently have become a leading candidate for the sources of FRBs. A magnetar called XTE J1810-197, discovered in 2003, was the first of only six such objects found to emit radio pulses.


9. Apple set to add music discovery app

• Apple acquired the music discovery app Shazam in 2018, but did little to push it out to the masses – until now.
• The tech giant released the beta of iOS 14.2 to developers for testing, revealing Shazam will be a toggle in the Control Center.
• The app has been available for iOS for some time, but users have to summon Siri to use it or open the app manually and a notification will appear that plays the selected song.

• US Supreme Court Justice and liberal icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on Friday, opening a crucial vacancy on the high court expected to set of f a pitched political battle at the peak of the presidential campaign.
• Affectionately known as the Notorious RBG, the 87-yearold Ginsburg was the oldest of nine Supreme Court justices.
• She died after a fight with pancreatic cancer, the court announced, saying she passed away `surrounded by her family at her home in Washington, DC.` Coming just 46 days before an election in which President Donald Trump lags his Democratic rival Joe Biden in the polls, the vacancy offers the Republican a chance to lock in a conservative majority at the court for decades to come.
