1. Govt allows rise in prices of 94 life-saving drugs

• The federal cabinet on September 22, 2020 approved increase in prices of 94 life-saving drugs to ensure their availability in the market, and brought down the price of Remdesivir 100mg injection, used in Covid-19 treatment, from Rs10,873 to Rs8,244.
• The meeting, which was presided over by Prime Minister Imran Khan, took a number of other important decisions related to energy crisis in the country, circular debt in the power sector and the anti-rape bill.


2. Eight years on, ex-MQM men get death in factory fire case

• An antiterrorism court on September 22, 2020 sentenced two former activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) to death and awarded life imprisonment to four gatekeepers of the Baldia garments factory, while acquitting party leader Rauf Siddiqui in Pakistan`s deadliest industrial blaze case.
• Some 264 male and female workers, including 16 who remain unidentified, were burnt alive in an `arson` attack on the multistorey Ali Enterprises garments factory in Karachi`s Baldia Town on Sept 11, 2012.


3. Clinical trial of Covid-19 vaccine begins in Islamabad

• While the number of active cases of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) has again started rising, in a major development the country started clinical trials of a vaccine on September 22, 2020.
• Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health, Dr Faisal Sultan, who was accompanied by the Executive Director of National Institute of Health (NIH), Maj Gen Aamar Ikram, announced the launch of the clinical trial


4. President approves Medical Commission Bill

• President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday approved a set of bills including the Pakistan Medical Commission Bill 2020 and Islamabad High Court (IHC Amendment) Bill 2020.
• The Pakistan Medical Commission Bill 2020 bill will help regulate the medical sector through implementation of uniform standards to ensure quality of training and educational qualifications in the field of medicine and dentistry.
• Meanwhile, the president also approved Pakistan Medical Tribunal Bill 2020. The bill is aimed at establishing a Special Judicial Tribunal for resolving disputes in the medical and health sectors.


5. Schools reopen for sixth to eighth graders

• Schools in Islamabad and Rawalpindi will resume classes for sixth, seventh and eighth grade today (September 23, 2020) in the second phase of the government`s reopening of educational institutions.
• Meanwhile, the district administration on Tuesday detected two new cases of Covid19 in its random sampling of educational institutions that opened on Sept 15.


6. Dr Ali appointed managing director of information technology board

• The government approved appointment of Dr Sahibzada Ali Mahmood as managing director of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board (KPITB) here on September 22, 2020.
• According to an official statement, the decision was made at the 11th Board of Directors meeting of KPITB chaired by Chief Minister Mahmood Khan.
• The chief minister said that promotion of information technology and digitisation of services of provincial departments was fundamental part of government`s good governance strategy.


7. Palestinians quit Arab League role in protest

• The Palestinians have stepped down from a key Arab League role in protest at the regional bloc`s failure to take a stand against Israeli-Arab deals, an official said on September 22, 2020.
• Palestinian foreign minister Riyad al-Maliki announced the decision to resign from the rotating presidency of the Council of the Arab League, after its failure to agree a draft resolution condemning a normalisation accord between the UAE and Israel


8. Bahraini, Israeli leaders in post-accord telephone talks

• Bahrain`s crown prince, Sheikh Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held talks on the telephone on September 22, 2020, a week after their countries signed a normalisation accord.
• They `reviewed potential areas of bilateral cooperation and relevant regional and international developments`, the Gulf state`s BNA news agency said


9. Mozambique insurgency will deepen food insecurity into 2021: UN

• Escalating conflict and deteriorating food security in northern Mozambique, where more than 300,000 people have abandoned their homes and crops, could see “crisis” levels of food insecurity continue into 2021, the World Food Programme warned Tuesday.
• “We are deeply concerned about the unfolding humanitarian situation in Cabo Delgado where conflict and violence have left people without access to food and livelihoods,” WFP spokeswoman in Mozambique Antonella D’Aprile said in a statement.


10. UN chief warns against ‘new Cold War’

• UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the world to prevent a Cold War between the United States and China, and halt conflicts so it can focus on the Covid-19 pandemic.
• “We must do everything to avoid a new Cold War,” Guterres said in an address as he opened an almost entirely virtual UN General Assembly.
