6. ADB approves $100m to improve KP health sector

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $100 million loan to improve the quality of secondary health care in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the lender said in a statement on September 22, 2022.
• The programme will improve the delivery of health services at secondary hospitals by modernising infrastructure and equipment, ensuring implementation of clinical protocols, standards and guidelines and improving human resources planning and medicine supply chain management, the ADB said.
• `While the coronavirus placed an enormous strain on essential health services in [KP] and across the country, Pakistan now face sun precedented flooding exacerbating the risk of waterborne diseases,` said ADB Director General for Central and West Asia Yevgeniy Zhukov


7. UN experts seek help for Pakistan to cope with disaster

• Eight top United Nations human rights experts have called on the countries of the world to step up their assistance to monsoon flood victims in Pakistan and ensure that international recovery efforts are guided by human rights law and standards.
• `We add our voices to those calling for international solidarity with the victims of the floods in Pakistan,` the experts said.
• `The global climate crisis has contributed to these terrible floods and caused unprecedented human suffering in Pakistan. All countries that have contributed to the global climate crisis have an international obligation to assist Pakistan with its recovery,` they said


8. Anti-police protests escalate in Iran; death toll rises to 17

• At least 17 people have been killed as popular unrest has nared across Iran over the death in custody of Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, while a rights group said Thursday the death toll was almost twice as high.
• Amini, 22, died last week after her arrest by the Islamic republic`s feared morality police for allegedly wearing a hijab headscarf in an `improper` way, and news of her death sparked widespread outrage.

9. Rein in TV channels, India`s supreme court tells govt

• India`s Supreme Court told the government on September 22, 2022 to rein in TV channels that were spreading hate, and said it could not be a mute witness to the free for all.
• `Hate speech is layered… Like killing someone, you can do it in multiple ways, slowly or otherwise. They keep us hooked based on certain convictions,` the court said, expanding on why hate speech interests viewers, according to NDTV.
• Hearing a batch of petitions seeking directions, Justice K.M. Joseph made several oral observations. `Where is our nation headed?` he asked, making the case for a firm regulatory mechanism against hate speech.


10. 270 freed in Ukraine, Russia swap

• President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed as `superheroes` the senior Ukrainian commanders, including those who led the dogged defence of Mariupol, who were freed by Russia as part of a prisoner swap involving 270 people, including foreigners.
• Under the terms of the deal, which Turkiye helped broker, 215 Ukrainians most of them captured after the fall of the port city were released on Wednesday. In exchange, Ukraine sent back 55 Russians and pro-Moscow Ukrainians.
• Ten foreigners were also freed following mediation by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who has maintained close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
