1. Two soldiers martyred in Indian shelling

• Two soldiers of the Pakistan Army embraced martyrdom in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on September 23, 2020 due to unprovoked firing and shelling by Indian troops from across the Line of Control (LoC).
• The fatalities occurred in Dewa sector of AJK`s Bhimber district after the Indian troops resorted to ceasefire violation in the area without any provocation, according to a statement issued by Inter Services Public Relations, the military`s media affairs wing, on September 23, 2020

2. Opposition ready to pass govt`s NAB bill `as it is`

• A National Assembly panel on September 23, 2020 deferred consideration of three important bills, with the opposition members surprising many by declaring that it was ready to pass the government`s National Accountability (Second Amendment) Bill `as it is`.
• The National Assembly`s Standing Committee on Law and Justice met here under the chairmanship of Riaz Fatyana, as three important bills National Accountability (Second Amendment) Bill, 2019 (Ordinance No XXVII of 2019), Whistleblower Protection and Vigilance Commission, Ordinance No XXIII of 2019 and International Court of Justice (Review and Re-consideration) Ordinance No VI of 2020 were on the agenda

3. TikTok sets up council to allay concerns over content control

• Amid concerns in Pakistan and some other Asian countries over lack of content regulations at its platform, TikTok has established a regional Safety Advisory Council to advise its management on content moderation policies and safety issues specific to Asia Pacific.
• One of the leading short video platforms, TikTok has introduced its Asia Pacific (APAC) Safety Advisory Council which consists of experts in the field of legal and regulatory bodies and academics from across the region to advise TikTok for policies on content moderation. Jehan Ara, President of the Pakistan Software Houses Association for IT, is one of the seven members of the council

4. ECC opens up another border crossing for trade with Afghanistan

• The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on September 23, 2020 approved notification of Kharlachi as another border crossing with Afghanistan for trade, removed duties on selected textile items and waived Rs13 billion loan guarantee fee on Chinese loans for nuclear power plants.
• Presided over by Adviser to PM on Finance and Revenue Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, the ECC also approved purchase of about Rs10bn worth of vaccines on behalf of provinces and payment of salaries to employees of the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM)

5. Elections in GB slated for Nov 15

• President Dr Arif Alvi on September 23, 2020 announced through a notification that elections for the Legislative Assembly of strategically located Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) would be held on Nov 15.
• The elections on the 24 general seats of the GB Legislative Assembly were earlier scheduled to be held on Aug 18 but were later postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The five-year term of the previous assembly had ended on June 24, bringing an end to the five year rule of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)

6. Workers lost $3.5tr in wages amid pandemic: UN

• The coronavirus pandemic is taking a heavier toll on jobs than previously feared, the UN said on September 23, 2020, with hundreds of millions of jobs lost and workers suffering a `massive` drop in earnings.
• In a fresh study, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) found that by the midyear point, global working hours had declined by 17.3 percent compared to last December equivalent to nearly 500 million full-time jobs

7. Thousands take to streets after Lukashenko is sworn in secretly

• Belarusian security forces began detaining people and fired water cannon to disperse crowds as thousands took to the streets of Minsk in protest against the abrupt inauguration of veteran President Alexander Lukashenko on September 23, 2020.
• Ignoring calls for an end to his 26-year grip on power, Lukashenko was sworn in for a sixth term after an election that the opposition and several foreign governments say was rigged

8. Iran strikes defiant tone at UN amid crushing US sanctions

• Grappling with a weakened economy and the Middle East`s worst coronavirus outbreak, Iran`s president delivered a defiant and fiery speech on Tuesday to the UN General Assembly as he insisted it would be the United States that surrenders to Iran`s resilience.
• Hassan Rouhani spoke in a prerecorded speech to the virtual summit just days after Iran`s currency plunged to its lowest levels ever against the US dollar due to crippling US sanctions imposed by President Donald Trump, who pulled the US out of Iran`s nuclear deal with world powers in 2018. The accord had been signed by the Obama administration. The sanctions effectively bar Iran from selling its oil globally

9. Erdogan links peace in S. Asia to Kashmir issue settlement

• Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has once again raised his voice in support of the Kashmiri people when he told the 75th UN General Assembly on Tuesday evening that there could be no peace in South Asia until this long simmering dispute was resolved.
• Mr Erdogan, in his video-link address to the august gathering, told the United Nations to `accurately and sincerely evaluate` its performance if it wanted to stay relevant in today`s world.

10. PCB confirms bio-secure home series against Zimbabwe

• Pakistan will launch their ICC World Cup Super League campaign by hosting Zimbabwe for a three-match ODI series in October November, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced on September 23, 2020.
• The 50-over matches against Zimbabwe will be played in Multan on Oct 30, Nov 1 and 3, followed by three T20 Internationals in Rawalpindi on Nov 7, 8 and 10.
• The International Cricket Council has introduced the Super League to provide context to ODI cricket and will serve as qualification for the 2023 ICC World Cup with the top seven sides automatically booking their spots for the event to be staged in India
