September 25, 2020: National / International Current Affairs

1. Diplomats visit LoC, meet survivors of Indian shelling

• Foreign diplomats and officials of international organisations on September 24, 2020 visited the Line of Control in Azad Jammu and Kashmir for witnessing the situation in the wake of repeated ceasefire violations by Indian troops.
• They were taken to Jura sector on LoC, where Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar briefed them about the ceasefire breaches by Indian military. The visit had been arranged by the Foreign Office and the ISPR.

2. South Punjab to have separate ADP

• The provincial government intends to prepare a separate Annual Development Pogramme (ADP) for south Punjab in the next fiscal and efforts are also afoot to separate the ADP for this year too by allocating the development budget scheme-wise and prepare separate finance books for south and rest of the province.
• Punjab government had already allocated 35 percent of the province`s development budget for south and ringfenced it so that these funds could not be withdrawn and utilised for the projects in other parts of the province

3. Commissioner announces Gilgit-Baltistan election schedule

• The Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Election Commissioner Raja Shehbaz on September 24, 2020 announced the scheduled for the general elections in the GB region.
• According to the schedule announced, public notices will be issued by the Returning Officers on 24th September (today).
• The candidates have been asked to submit their candidature credentials with the ROs latest by 25th of September. The credentials will be accepted for five days. The publication of name of nominated candidates will be on first of October. The nomination paper will be scrutinized on 7th of October.

4. Shibli launches Pakistan Citizen Portal Helpline

• Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz on September 24, 2020 launched the Pakistan Citizen Portal Helpline so that the people especially from far flung areas could conveniently file their complaints online and seek resolution of the issues related to different government departments.
• Speaking at the launch of the portal helpline here, he said everybody was looking towards the government departments for resolution of their complaints

5. Global maps of solar corona magnetic field created

• The Sun is a magnetized star. Its magnetic field is essentially three dimensional and it occupies all layers of the solar atmosphere.
• However, routine measurements of the solar magnetic field have only been achieved at the photospheric level, or the solar surface. Lacking precise knowledge about the magnetic field in the outermost solar atmosphere, the corona, has impeded our understanding of the solar magnetism and many phenomena in the solar atmosphere

6. Enough is enough: Beijing attacks Washington at United Nations

• China on September 24, 2020 lashed out at the United States at a high-level UN meeting over its criticism on the coronavirus, with its envoy declaring, `Enough is enough! Two days after President Donald Trump used his annual address to the General Assembly to attack China, its ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, criticised the US global role.
• `I must say, enough is enough! You have created enough troubles for the world already,` he told a Security Council meeting on global governance attended through videoconference by several heads of state

7. US to execute first Black man since resumption of death penalty

• The U.S. government plans on September 24, 2020 to execute Christopher Vialva, a convicted murderer and the first Black man to face the federal death penalty since the punishment was resumed this summer after a 17-year hiatus.
• Vialva was 19 years old when he and fellow members of a gang in Killeen, Texas, killed Todd and Stacie Bagley, white married Christian youth ministers from lowa, on the Fort Hood army base in 1999

8. Kashmiri journalist Masrat Zahra wins award

• Kashmiri photojournalist Masrat Zahra on September 24, 2020 received the Peter Mackler prize for courageous and ethical journalism thanks to her coverage of women impacted by decades of unrest in India held Kashmir.
• `To work in this industry is to bring the truth,` the 26-year-old journalist said during a virtual ceremony.
• Zahra`s work shines a light on the stories of women who would otherwise likely be forgotten in deeply patriarchal South Asia

9. Trailblazing journalist Harold Evans dies at 92

• Sir Harold Evans, a British American editor whose 70-year career as a hard-driving investigative journalist, magazine founder, book publisher and author made him one of the most influential media figures of his generation, died on September 23, 2020 at the age of 92.
• Evans died of congestive heart failure in New York, according to his wife Tina Brow

10. Ex-Australia batsman Dean Jones passes away

• Dean Jones, the former Australia batsman, has died of a heart attack aged 59. Jones was in Mumbai as part of the commentary team at Star Sports for IPL 2020 when he passed away on September, 24 September.
• ICC Chief Executive Manu Sawhney said: “We are extremely sad to hear of Dean’s sudden death and I would like to extend our deep condolences to his family and friends on behalf of the ICC. “Dean was a prolific batter playing in 52 Tests and 164 ODIs and was part of the 1987 Australia team who won the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. He had an significant impact on the game of cricket as a player, as an advocate for the development of the sport as a coach and latterly in his role as a broadcaster. He will be sorely missed by all those in the cricket family.”
