1. CPEC panel okays ambitious Karachi coastline plan

• Calling it a `game-changer`, the federal government on September 25, 2021 unveiled an ambitious plan to rebuild Karachi`s coastline under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) with $3.5 billion `direct Chinese investment` that aims to overhaul city`s seaboard with new berths for the port, a new fishery port and a `majestic harbour bridge` connecting it with Manora islands and Sands pit beach.
• The Karachi Coastal Comprehensive Development Zone (KCCDZ) spread over 640 hectares or 1,581 acres on the western backwaters marsh land of the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) leading to revamp one of the oldest city slums Machhar Colony relocating its more than half a million population is an initiative of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs.
• The KCCDZ is the latest addition to CPEC projects aimed at providing Karachi with an ultra modern urban infrastructure zone, placing it among the top port cities of the world

2. Four soldiers martyred in bomb attack

• Four security personnel were martyred and two others injured in a bomb attack on a vehicle of the Frontier Corps in the Khosat area of Harnai district on September 25, 2021.
• The banned Baloch Liberation Army claimed responsibility for the attack.
• Official sources said that the FC vehicle was targeted in the Safar Basharea.
• The FC soldiers were performing their patrolling duty and when their vehicle reached the Safar Bash area the improvised explosive device went off resulting in martyrdom of four soldiers and injuries to two officers.

3. World Bank, ADB prepare climate risk profile of Pakistan

• The World Bank and the Asian Development Bank have jointly prepared a climate risk profile of Pakistan, which projects an increase in the number of people affected by flooding, with a likely increase of around 5 million people exposed to extreme river floods by 2035-44.
• According to the profile, there could be a potential increase of around 1m people annually exposed to coastal flooding by 2070-2100.
• Pakistan faces rates of warming considerably above the global average with a potential rise of 1.3 to 3.9 centigrade by the 2900s over the 19862005 baseline

4. Kashmir not India`s internal matter, reaffirms Islamabad

• Pakistan on September 24, 2021 firmly rejected India`s claim at the United Nations that Jammu and Kashmir was its integral part, saying the Himalayan state was an internationally recognised disputed territory.
• `Jammu and Kashmir neither is a so called `integral` part of India, nor is it India`s internal matter,` Pakistani delegate Saima Saleem said in response to an Indian delegate`s remarks that by raising the Kashmir dispute in his speech to the UN General Assembly on Friday, Prime Minister Imran Khan had brought in `matters internal to my country`

5. No sales tax on fresh fruit imports from Kabul

• The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) on September 25, 2021 announced that there will be no sales tax on fresh fruit imports from Afghanistan.
• This concession by the FBR is being appreciated by traders from both sides as a key decision which will certainly promote trade between the two neighbouring countries.
• Besides, FBR Chairman Ashfaq Ahmad during his visit to Torkham border ensured clearance of 1,400 trucks loaded with fruits from Afghanistan which had got stuck. The FBR chief accompanied by Member Customs Tariq Huda and Member Customs Policy Saeed Jadoon also reviewed the pace and quality of services being provided by Pakistan Customs to facilitate border trade. The customs staff assured him to accelerate the process of 100 more trucks awaiting clearance

6. Taliban hang four bodies in Herat to deter abductions

• Taliban authorities in the western Afghan city of Herat killed four alleged kidnappers and hung their bodies up in public to deter others, a local government official said on September 25, 2021.
• Sher Ahmad Ammar, deputy governor of Herat, said the men had kidnapped a local businessman and his son and intended to take them out of the city, when they were seen by patrols that had set up checkpoints around the city.
• An exchange of gunfire ensued in which all four were killed, while one Taliban soldier was wounded

7. Huawei executive lands in China after deal with US

• Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou returned to China on September 25, 2021 shortly after two Canadians released from prison in China also arrived in Calgary, ending a bitter diplomatic row that has poisoned ties for three years.
• Meng and the two Canadians former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor were detained in a bitter spat critics have called `hostage diplomacy`.
• Meng, the 49-year-old daughter of Ren Zhengfei, the billionaire founder of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, was granted release in a Vancouver court hearing after three years of house arrest in Canada while fighting extradition to the United States

8. World `better place` 25 years after nuclear test-ban treaty

• Twenty-five years after its adoption, the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty has made the world a safer place, experts say, despite never being ratified and concerns over North Korea.
• The Americans conducted the world`s first nuclear test in the desert of New Mexico on July 16, 1945.
• Between then and September 24, 1996, when the treaty opened for signature, more than 2,000 nuclear tests were carried out, says Robert Floyd, head of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty Organisation (CTBTO), a UN body. Since September 24, 1996 there have been only about a dozen tests, carried out by India, North Korea and Pakistan

9. UN agency warns of `imminent` famine in Afghanistan

• Afghanistan is at risk of `imminent hunger` with winter approaching and services disrupted by the return to power of the Taliban, a UN official warned in an interview.
• Natalia Kanem, director of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), said via video that the situation in the country was dire.
• `It would not be an exaggeration to say` that at least a third of Afghanistan`s population of around 33 million is affected by `imminent hunger,` Kanem warned.

10. Pak-India women`s rights icon Kamla Bhasin passes away

• She could unassumingly cheer a passionate meeting of India-Pakistan peace activists from the back benches. It would be difficult to tell her own nationality though. She could signal the end of a long night for the region`s women from her wheelchair, with rousing poetry when she was ill. But she would clarify quickly.

• Kamla Bhasin, who passed away on Saturday at 75 after a short struggle with cancer, would perhaps be best remembered for grafting a slogan that Pakistani women first used against Gen Ziaul Haq`s dictatorship on the body politic of India the universal and unalloyed demand for Azadi, the fight for freedom
