1. Afghanistan`s reconciliation leader Abdullah arrives today

• The chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation (HCNR) of Afghanistan, Dr Abdullah Abdullah, will arrive here September 28, 2020 on a three-day visit.
• Dr Abdullah will be accompanied by a high-level delegation comprising prominent members of the High Council for National Reconciliation, the Foreign Office announced in a statement here on Sunday.
• During the visit, Dr. Abdullah will meet Prime Minister Imran Khan and President Dr Arif Alvi.


2. Changes made in Afridi`s portfolio

• The government has denotified Shehryar Afridi as minister of state for states and frontier regions and narcotics control, but allowed him to continue with the status of a minister of state in his capacity as chairman of the parliamentary committee on Kashmir.
• President Dr Arif Alvi made the changes on the advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan on September 27, 2020.
• An official notification to this effect was issued and posted on the Cabinet Division`s website.


3. Ministry launches mark up subsidy scheme worth Rs12.86b for agri sector

• Ministry of National Food Security & Research has launched mark up and cotton whitefly subsidy schemes with an amount of Rs12.861 billion under the Fiscal Package announced by the Prime Minister for the agriculture sector to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 pandemic.
• Under the first scheme of markup subsidy an amount of Rs. 6.861 billion would be spent for 10 per cent mark up subsidy on agriculture loans disbursed by Zarai Tarqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), said a spokesman of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research.


4. CM launches Punjab Tourism App

• Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar September 27, 2020 inaugurated the Tourism Punjab App on the World Tourism Day to promote tourism in the province. He also launched the DTS system for registration of the tourist operators.
• In this connection, the Chief Minister chaired a high level meeting to review the steps taken for the promotion of tourism. The meeting was briefed about the salient features of Punjab Tourism App


5. Former Mali foreign minister named transitional premier

• Former Malian foreign minister Moctar Ouane has been named prime minister by the country`s interim president Bah Ndaw, state television announced on September 27, 2020.
• Quane, 64, served as foreign minister between 2004 and 2011 during Amadou Toumani Toure`s presidency. The members of the new PM`s government will be unveiled on Tuesday, an officer from the military junta in power since Mali`s August 18 coup said


6. Azerbaijan-Armenia clashes over Karabakh kill 23

• Arch foes Armenia and Azerbaijan on September 27, 2020 accused each other of initiating deadly clashes that claimed at least 23 lives over a decades-long territorial dispute and threatened to draw in regional powers Russia and Turkey.
• The worst clashes since 2016 have raised the spectre of a fresh war between long-standing rivals Azerbaijan and Armenia which have been locked for decades in a territorial dispute over the Armenia-backed breakaway region of Nagorny Karabakh


7. Azerbaijan declares Martial Law, curfew in Baku, other cities

• Azerbaijan on September 27, 2020 declared martial law and a curfew in capital Baku and several other cities, as fighting with Armenian rebel forces in Nagorny Karabakh claimed military and civilian casualties on both sides.
• “Martial law will be introduced as of midnight as well as a curfew from 9 pm to 6 am,” in Baku, several other cities and districts that are close to the Karabakh frontline, presidency spokesman Hikmet Hajiyev told journalists


8. Iran unveils new naval ballistic missile

• Iran`s Revolutionary Guards on September 27, 2020 unveiled a new naval ballistic missile with a potential range of over 700 kilometres (430 miles), local media reported, following months of tensions with the arch-enemy United States.
• The missile, dubbed `Zolf aghar Basir`, is a naval variant of the surface-to surface Zolfaghar ballistic missile, according to Tasnim news agency


9. World living in shadow of nuclear catastrophe, UN chief warns

• UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for reversing course and returning to a common path of nuclear disarmament to create a nuclear weapon free world. The UN chief made that call in a message on the occasion of the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons marked on September 26, 2020.
• The UN committed itself in 1946, to ridding the planet of nuclear weapons after the devastating death and destruction, and the aftermath of the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it was pointed out. Almost seventy five years later “the world continues to live in the shadow of nuclear catastrophe,” the secretary-general said


10. Jaswant Singh, advocate of peace with Pakistan, dies at 82

• Former Indian foreign minister Jaswant Singh, who brought New Delhi and Islamabad tantalisingly close to a peace deal over Kashmir in Agra, died here on September 27, 2020 at the age of 82.
• Mr Singh had been in coma from a fall at his home in August 2014. That was a few months after losing the Lok Sabha election as an independent candidate in May that year, the election that swept then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi to power as prime minister
