1. SC rejects petitions for presidential form of govt

• The Supreme Court on September 27, 2021 rejected a set of appeals seeking immediate holding of a nationwide referendum by Prime Minister Imran Khan to pave the way for presidential system against the prevalent parliamentary form of government.
• A three-judge SC bench headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial upheld the registrar office`s decision to return the four petitions moved by Advocate Sahibzada Ahmed Raza Qasuri, Dr Sadiq Ali, Hum Awam Pakistan chairman Tahir Aziz Khan and Hafeez-ur-Rehman.


2. IMF assured of Pakistan`s commitment to programme

• Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin on September 27, 2021 assured the International Monetary Fund (IMF) of Pakistan`s commitment to its ongoing Extended Fund Facility (EFF) programme and hoped to successfully complete the upcoming review as well as Article IV consultations.
• During a meeting with the outgoing and nominated resident representatives of the IMF, the finance minister said the government would formally launch the `track and trace` system for tobacco products on Oct 1 this year. `This is also one of the requirements under the EFF programme,` an official statement quoted Mr Tarin as saying.
• The minister told the IMF team that reforms were being carried out in the power sector to address the issue of circular debt


3. Miraj Gul appointed NTC`s managing director

• Miraj Gul has been appointed the managing director of National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC), MP-1 scale, under the Ministry of Information Technology (IT) and Telecommunication.
• According to the notification issued by the ministry, Mr Gul was appointed on contract basis for a period of three years. He had been serving as the acting NTC MD since the last couple of months.
• He had also served as chief technology officer (CTO) in the organisation.


4. 24pc graduates are jobless, Senate panel told

• The Senate Standing Committee on Planning, Development and Special Initiatives was informed on September 27, 2021 that 16 per cent of uneducated population of Pakistan was unemployed while among the educated population 24pc of graduates were jobless out of whom 40 were female.
• A meeting of the committee, presided over by its chairman Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, however, noted that these figures shared by the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) were in contrast to the figures given by the government


5. EU, US urge Iran to give access to IAEA

• The EU and the US on September 27, 2021 urged Iran to allow inspectors access to a nuclear site, while Tehran argued the facility was exempt from a recent agreement with the UN watchdog.
• The Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Sunday it had been denied `indispensable` access to the TESA Karaj centrifuge component manufacturing workshop near Tehran contrary to a Sept 12 agreement with Iran.
• Iran`s ambassador to the IAEA Kazem Gharibabadi on Monday rejected the charge.


6. Macron hit with egg during visit to trade fair

• A man pelted French President Emmanuel Macron with an egg while he was visiting a restaurant and hotel trade fair in the south-eastern city of Lyon on September 27, 2021.
• The egg hit his shoulder, but bounced off without breaking.
• The assailant was quickly subdued and removed from the room, with Macron saying he would try to speak with him later.
• `If he has something to tell me, let him come, Macron said at the International Catering, Hotel and Food Trade Fair (SIRHA). `Pil go see him afterwards


7. Two transgender women win seats in German parliament

• Two German politicians from the Greens have made history by becoming the first transgender women to win parliamentary seats in national election.
• Tessa Ganserer and Nyke Slawik stood for the Greens party, which came third in the election, increasing its share of the vote to 14.8pc from 8.9pc in 2017 and is set to play a pivotal role in the building of a new three way coalition government.
• `It is a historic victory for the Greens, but also for the trans-emancipatory movement and for the entire queer community, Ganserer, 44, said, adding that the results were a symbol of an open and tolerant society


8. Afghan envoy cancels address on final day of UN meeting

• Afghanistan`s envoy to the UN pulled out of delivering an address to the General Assembly on September 27, 2021, as the diplomatic marathon that saw 100 leaders defy coronavirus fears to meet in person in New York drew to a close.
• Ghulam Isaczai, who represented president Ashraf Ghani`s regime that was ousted last month, had been due to defy the Taliban with a speech but he removed his name from the list of speakers on Monday.
• The annual high-level meet was also set to end without a speech on behalf of Myanmar, whose envoy has defied the military junta running the country to stay in his post


9. Iran, S. Arabia hold first talks since Raisi`s appointment

• Representatives from Iran and Saudi Arabia have held a new round of talks in Baghdad, two Iraqi officials said on September 27, 2021, in the first such meeting between the regional foes since President Raisi was sworn in in Tehran.
• The meeting held last week discussed pending issues between the two countries according to a previously agreed on roadmap, including diplomatic representation between the two countries, according to one Iraqi official. The official said the meeting was not on a ministerial level, but described the talks as positive


10. Merkel`s farewell turns sour as Social Democrats win polls in Germany

• German Social Democrat Olaf Scholz vowed on September 27, 2021 to strengthen the European Union and keep up the transatlantic partnership in a three-way coalition government he hopes to form by Christmas to take over from Angela Merkel`s conservatives.
• Scholz`s Social Democrats (SPD) came first in Sunday`s national election, just ahead of the conservatives, and aim to lead a government for the first time since 2005 in a coalition with the Greens and the liberal Free Democrats (FDP).
• Scholz, 63, projected a sense of calm assurance when asked whether the close election result and the prospect of prolonged coalition negotiations sent a message of instability in Germany to its European partners.
