1. Islamabad, Kabul look forward to new era in ties

• Top Afghan peace official Abdullah Abdullah on September 29, 2020 emphasised the centrality of Pakistan`s role for peace in his country as both sides agreed on turning over a leaf in their ties marred by mutual mistrust and acrimony.
• Remarks by Chairman of Afghanistan`s High Council for National Reconciliation Abdullah Abdullah and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) and Prime Minister Imran Khan`s conversation with the visiting Afghan official unmistakably pointed to an impending paradigm shift in the way the two countries have so far conducted their bilateral ties


2. Primary schools reopen today

• Under the final phase of reopening of educational institutions, primary schools across the country will reopen on September 29, 2020 (today) as positive cases of Covid-19 have been recorded at a rate of less than one percent in high schools and universities.
• The announcement was made by federal Education Minister Shafgat Mahmood and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health Dr Faisal Sultan after a review meeting held at the National Command and Operation Centre here on Tuesday


3. Ashrafi made special representative for religious harmony

• Hafiz Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi was appointed as special representative to the prime minister on religious harmony.
• A notification issued by the PM Secretariat said: `The prime minister has been pleased to appoint Maulana Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi as Special Representative of the Prime Minister on Religious Harmony, with immediate effect.


4. Soldier, boy martyred in Indian firing

• Indian troops opened fire across the de facto border in the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir, killing a soldier and a 15-year-old boy and wounding four others, Pakistan`s military and other officials said on September 29, 2020.
• `In intense exchange of fire Sepoy Shafique fighting valiantly embraced shahadat,` said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release


5. Amnesty suspends Indian operations due to govt `witch-hunt`

• Amnesty International has suspended its Indian operations after its bank accounts were frozen in what it called a government `witch-hunt` against rights groups.
• Government critics within civil society organisations and the media have long complained of harassment in the world`s biggest democracy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s Hindu nationalist administration, something which it denies


6. Armenia accuses Turkey of downing warplane during Azerbaijan clashes

• Armenia said on September 29, 2020 that a Turkish fighter jet had shot down one of its warplanes during heavy fighting with Turkey`s ally Azerbaijan, but Ankara fiercely denied the claim.
• Direct Turkish military action against Armenia would mark a major escalation after three days of heavy fighting between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces over the breakaway region of Nagorny Karabakh


7. China objects to Ladakh status, India`s border activities

• China on September 29, 2020 called India`s designation of the region along their disputed border as a federal territory an illegal move, and voiced new objections to infrastructure construction that seems to strengthen India`s position in the area.
• Foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin also said reports of new Chinese military bases and other facilities being built on its side were totally untrue and have ulterior motives


8. WHO unveils speedy Covid tests for Third World

• Coronavirus tests that deliver results in 15-30 minutes are to be rolled out across the United States and in scores of poorer countries, as health authorities worldwide try to get a handle on a disease that has now killed more than a million people.
• US President Donald Trump announced 150 million tests would be distributed in America, while the World Health Organisation said 120 million more would be available for the developing world at $5 each as long as funding was secured


9. Kuwait`s emir Sheikh Sabah dies at age 91

• Kuwait`s emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the architect of the nation`s modern foreign policy and mediator in some of the worst crises to grip the Gulf, died on September 29, 2020 at the age of 91.
• The government quickly named his half-brother, 83-year-old Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, as his successor.
• Sheikh Sabah had earned a reputation as a shrewd, unshakeable leader who helped steer his country through the 1990 Iraqi invasion, crashes in global oil markets and upheavals in parliament and on the streets


10. National T20 Cup action begins today

• The 31-match First XI National T20 Cup will roll into action from September 30, 2020 with Multan hosting the first leg of the double league competition as defending champions Northern take on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the opening fixture.
• The second game on day one will be the Punjab derby when Central play Southern, while Sindh and Balochistan who were heavily beaten in last year`s final in Faisalabad begin their campaign on Thursday when they face each other.
