1. Govt bans five more apps to curb `immoral content`

• In its latest move amid the ongoing clampdown on `immoral` content online, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has blocked access to five more applications in Pakistan.
• Over the weekend, several users complained on social media that the dating applications, mainly Tinder, were not working in the country.
• The PTA confirmed it had blocked Tinder, Tagged, Skout, Grindr and SayHi. `Keeping in view the negative effects of immoral/ indecent content streaming through the above applications, PTA issued notices to the management of above mentioned platforms.

2. Inflation eases to 8.2pc in August

• Inflation eased to 8.2 per cent in August, from 9.3pc in July on the back of a slight decline in prices of essential food products, data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) showed on September 1, 2020.
• Inflation during the month fell despite a significant rise in the petroleum prices.
• The data showed chicken prices dipped by 36.45pc in August from the previous month, tomatoes 31.83pc, eggs 1.33pc, and fresh fruits 23.15pc.
• Moreover, prices of all varieties of pulses also declined during the month under review

3. China can make India suffer `severe` military losses: report

• China is able to make India suffer more severe military losses than in the past if it wants to engage in competition, state backed newspaper Global Times said on September 1, 2020, after a fresh border flareup between the two nuclear-armed countries.
• Indian forces foiled an attempt by Chinese troops to occupy a hill on the Asian giants disputed border in the western Himalayas, officials in New Delhi said on Monday.
• On the same day, China`s military spokesman demanded India withdraw troops that Beijing said had illegally crossed their shared border.

4. UN urged to stop India from changing held Kashmir`s demography

• Pakistan has urged the international community to prevent India from implementing the so-called `final solution` in occupied Kashmir by turning its Muslim majority into a minority.
• During an informal meeting on the UN Security Council`s plenary annual report on Monday, Pakistan`s permanent representative Munir Akram complained that the council had done little to rein in Hindutva extremist groups which were terrorizing Muslims across India, particularly in occupied Kashmir.
• `The BJP-RSS government is putting in place what they have themselves called the `Final Solution` in occupied Kashmir,` he said. `Demographic flooding by settler communities is meant to disempower and disenfranchise the Kashmiri people and to obliterate their Muslim identity

5. Saudi Arabia sacks military commander

• A top Saudi military commander and his son were sacked over graft allegations, state media said, in the government’s latest anti-corruption purge.
• Joint forces commander Prince Fahad bin Turki — a senior royal family member — and Abdulaziz bin Fahad, the deputy emir of northern Al-Jouf region, were fired and placed under investigation for corruption, according to the report.
• Several other officers and civilian employees of the defence ministry were also being probed for corruption, it added, citing a royal decree from King Salman

6. Israel strikes on Syria kill 11, one a civilian

• Israeli strikes on Syria killed one civilian, three government troops and seven allied foreign fighters, a war monitor said on September 1, 2020 in a new toll.
• The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which had previously put the toll from Monday`s strikes at five, said Iran-backed paramilitary fighters were among those killed in the attack.
• The Britain-based monitor said the strikes hit Syrian army positions south of Damascus as well as positions belonging to Iran backed paramilitaries, including fighters of the Lebanese Hezbollah movement, in the southern province of Daraa.

7. US police shoot and kill another black man

• US police have shot dead another black man, who they said had a handgun but had dropped it during a violent altercation in Los Angeles, triggering fresh outrage as tensions soar over racism and police brutality.
• The man, named in local media as 29-year-old Dijon Kizzee, was riding his bicycle when Los Angeles County Sheriff`s deputies tried to stop him for an unspecified vehicle code violation on Monday afternoon.
• He fled on foot, and when officers caught up with him he punched one deputy in the face, dropping some items of clothing he was carrying, police said.

8. French magazine reprints sketches of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)

• French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo, the target of a massacre by gunmen in 2015, said on September 1, 2020 it was republishing hugely controversial sketches of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to mark this week`s start of the trial of alleged accomplices to the attack.
• The cover of the new issue has a dozen sketches of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), reproducing images that sparked protests when they were first published and a debate about the limits of freedom of speech.
• `We will never lie down. We will never give up,` director Laurent `Riss` Sourisseau wrote in an editorial to go with the blasphemous sketches

9. Pakistan edge England in thriller to share honours in T20 series

• Pakistan concluded their tour of England on a high note when they edged England by five runs to share honours in the three-match Twenty20 International at Old Trafford on September 1, 2020 night.
• It was Pakistan`s only win on the tour after they got beaten 1-0 in the three-Test series.
• Set to chase 191, England finished at 185-8, a total built on a blistering 33-ball 61 from Moeen Ali, who had a lucky escape on seven as Sarfaraz Ahmed playing his first international since October last year when he was dumped as Pakistan captain missed an easy stumping off Imad Wasim

10. US Open starts without fans as stars embrace weird silence

• Top seeds including Novak Djokovic overcame eerily quiet stands as a `weird` spectator-free US Open started at Flushing Meadows with heightened safety protocols for some players following a positive Covid-19 test.
• Several competitors were placed in what one of them described as a `bubble within a bubble` after France`s Benoit Paire was withdrawn from the men`s draw Sunday for testing positive for coronavirus.
• `It was made clear that the infected player was not adhering to the health protocols that have been approved by the State of New York,` a spokesperson for the United States Tennis Association (USTA) said
