1. Officer, two soldiers martyred in North Waziristan attack

• An army officer and two soldiers were martyred in a terrorist attack on security forces in North Waziristan on September 3, 2020.
• According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, the terrorists planted an improvised explosive device on a roadside.
• It went off near a convoy of troops providing protection to road construction teams working on Ghariom section of Shaga-Nishpa road in North Waziristan. As a result, Lieutenant Nasir Hussain Khalid, 23, resident of Muzaffarabad; Naik Muhammad Imran, 33, resident of Faisalabad; and Sepoy Usman Akhtar, 30, resident of Rawalpindi, embraced martyrdom. Four soldiers were injured.
• Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation


2. Pakistan regrets politicisation of UN sanctions regime

• Pakistan on September 3, 2020 regretted the politicisation of the United Nations sanctions regime after five UN Security Council members blocked its bid to get two Indians accused of terrorism here listed.
• `We regret the decision by some members of the UNSC Sanctions Committee to block the designation of two Indian nationals, Gobinda Patnaik and Angara Appaji, to the sanctions list on 2 September 2020,` Foreign Office spokesman Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said at the weekly media briefing.
• Pakistan had proposed designation of the Indian nationals under the United Nations Security Council`s Islamic State of Iraq and Levant and Al Qaeda Sanctions list in 2019.


3. Circular debt up by Rs538bn in last fiscal year

• The power sector`s circular debt increased by Rs538 billion (33.4 per cent) during the fiscal year ending on June 30, or at an average rate of about Rs45bn per month.
• This was observed during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Power presided over by Senator Fida Muhammad Khan on September 3, 2020.
• The government had been claiming that it had brought down the monthly build-up in circular debt from Rs38bn during the tenure of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government to Rs12bn and wanted to reduce it further to Rs8bn per month by December this year.


4. PM`s aide quits following family business allegations

• A week after allegations were levelled regarding his family`s assets, retired Lt Gen Asim Saleem Bajwa, while rejecting the allegations, said on Thursday he was resigning as special assistant to the prime minister (SAPM) on information and broadcasting and would submit his resignation to the PM on September 4, 2020 (today).
• However, Mr Bajwa said, he would continue working as chairman of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Authority.
• He said he had all documents about his family`s assets and was ready to present them and money trail before any judicial forum. A few days ago, journalist Ahmed Noorani broke the news on a website alleging that Mr Bajwa had used his offices in setting up of off-shore businesses of his wife, sons and brothers.


5. President Xi postpones visit to Pakistan

• Chinese President Xi Jinping has postponed his visit to Pakistan which was expected this year, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing said September 3, 2020.
• Speaking to journalists here, the envoy said that the visit was being rescheduled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
• Earlier in the day, the ambassador met Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi here.
• The Ambassador said the two governments were working on deciding a new date for President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan. “It would be announced soon. The two governments are working on it,” he said.
• Prime Minister Imran Khan had invited the Chinese President to Pakistan during his visit to China.


6. UNHCR opens skills development project for refugee and local women

• The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) here on September 3, 2020 launched a skills development project aimed at improving the skills and income-generating capacity of local and Afghan refugee women in the area.
• UNHCR Pakistan signed its first-ever agreement with NAMA Women Advancement Establishment (NAMA), a private sector partner based in the United Arab Emirates, to conduct a project to support and empower marginalized Afghan refugee and local women through skill development and enhancement in Balochistan.
• The project, being implemented by UNHCR’s partner Taraqee Foundation will benefit 100 Afghan refugee and Pakistani women


7. Tarakai returns to KP cabinet eight months after sacking

• Senior Pakistan Tehreek-iInsaf leader Shahram Khan Tarakai returned to the provincial cabinet on September 3, 2020 after eight months in the political wilderness.
• Mr Shahram, who was sacked as a cabinet member in Jan this year along with senior minister Atif Khan and revenue minister Shakeel Khan allegedly for conspiring against Chief Minister Mahmood Khan, took oath as a minister at the Governor`s House here.
• Governor Shah Farman also administered the oath to MPA from Raiaur district Anwar Zeb Khan as a minister.
• A statement of the Governor`s House issued said Mr Farman congratulated the newly-inducted ministers and wished them success in the `discharge of responsibilities in the best public interest`.


8. Israeli airline to start cargo flight for Dubai

• Israel`s national carrier El Al on September 3, 2020 announced a first cargo flight to Dubai, days after its groundbreaking commercial passenger trip to the United Arab Emirates.
• Following on the heels of a deal to normalise Israel UAE ties, the cargo flight is scheduled to take off from Ben Gurion airport near Tel Aviv on September 16, the airline said in a statement.
• Unlike the direct passenger flight, the cargo service will fly via Liege in Belgium before continuing to Dubai, El Al said, without explaining the roundabout route


9. Modi`s Twitter account hacked

• Twitter said on September 3, 2020 that an account of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi`s personal website was hacked with a series of tweets asking its followers to donate to a relief fund through cryptocurrency.
• The incident comes after several Twitter accounts of prominent personalities were hacked in July.
• Twitter said it was aware of the activity with Modi`s website account and has taken steps to secure it.


10. First international flight lands at Beijing’s main airport

• The Chinese capital’s main international airport on September 3, 2020 started welcoming international flights from specific countries including Pakistan considered at low risk of novel cononavirus infection.
• The first flight, Air China Flight 746, arrived from Cambodian city of Pnom Penh, Cambodia landed early in the morning at the Beijing’s main airport, Xu Hejian, a spokesperson of Beijing city government said at a press briefing.
• The passengers from Cambodia, Pakistan, Greece, Denmark, Thailand, Austria, Canada and Sweden, must have first shown a negative coronavirus test before boarding. He said the number of passenger arrivals will be limited to roughly 500 per day during a trial period and all will need to undergo additional testing for the virus on arrival, followed by two weeks of quarantine
