1. Afghanistan to top agenda in talks with Russian FM

• Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived here on April 7, 2021 on a two-day official visit to Pakistan to hold wide-ranging talks with his Pakistani counterpart, with issue of Afghanistan high on the agenda.
• He was received at the Chaklala airbase by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. This is the first visit of a Russian foreign minister to Pakistan since 2012.
• The Russian foreign minister will hold delegation level talks with Foreign Minister Qureshi on Wednesday (today)


2. WB puts Pakistan growth rate at 1.3pc

• The resurgence of recent infection rates and slow vaccination coupled with high inflation rate and consolidation policies could impact Pakistan`s nascent and fragile economic recovery and worsen poverty situation, according to a World Bank report.
• In its flagship `Pakistan Development Update-Navigating in Uncertain Times` released on April 7, 2021, the World Bank said the country had been showing signs of a fragile economic recovery with a gradual resumption of economic dynamism and was expected to achieve growth rate of 1.3pc and strengthen to an average of 2.7pc in FY23


3. IMF forecasts 1.5pc growth rate for Pakistan

• The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on April 7, 2021 forecast a subdued economic growth rate of 1.5 per cent for Pakistan, coupled with a higher rate of inflation and rising unemployment, during the current fiscal year.
• The 1.5pc growth projection by the IMF is in stark contrast with revised 3pc GDP growth forecast made by the State Bank of Pakistan a few days ago. The IMF estimates are in line with those of World Bank, which has projected grow that 1.3pc for current year.


4. WHO to help strengthen healthcare services in Islamabad

• The World Health Organisation (WHO) has given assurance that it will take all possible steps to strengthen healthcare services in the federal capital.
• The assurance came at a meeting attended by WHO Country Director Dr Palitha Mahipala and Director General Health Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) Dr Hasan Orooj at the WHO headquarters on April 7, 2021.
• It was decided that Dr Mahipala along with a team from the MCI will visit all areas in the federal capital, including slums, to strengthen the healthcare system.


5. UAE`s N-power plant begins commercial operations

• The United Arab Emirates announced on April 7, 2021 that its Barakah nuclear power plant has started commercial operations, in a first for the Arab world.
• `The UA E has entered a landmark phase today,` tweeted Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the UAE`s vice president and prime minister.
• `The first megawatt from the first Arab nuclear plant has entered the national power grid,` said Sheikh Mohammed, who is also the ruler of Dubai


6. World powers, Iran hold talks on reviving N-deal

• Iran and world powers held what they described as `constructive` talks on April 7, 2021 and agreed to form working groups to discuss the sanctions Washington might lift and the nuclear curbs Tehran might observe as they try to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.
• European intermediaries started shuttling between Iranian and US officials in Vienna as they sought to bring both countries back into compliance with the accord, which lifted sanctions on Iran in return for curbs to its nuclear programme


7. Sceptical Israeli president invites Netanyahu to form new govt

• A sceptical president invited Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on April 7, 2021 to form a new government, after another inconclusive election deepened political stalemate in Israel.
• The country`s longest-serving leader, in power consecutively since 2009, now faces the tough challenge of enlisting enough allies for a governing coalition.
• Under law, Netanyahu will have 28 days to do so, with the possibility of a two-week extension before President Reuven Rivlin picks another candidate or asks parliament to choose one. Continued deadlock could ultimately result in a new election


8. Helicopter survives first night alone on Mars

• Nasa`s Ingenuity mini-helicopter survived its first night alone on the frigid surface of Mars, the US space agency said, hailing it as `a major milestone` for the tiny craft as it prepares for its first flight.
• The ultra-light aircraft was dropped on the surface on Saturday after detaching from the belly of the Perseverance rover, which touched down on the Red Planet on Feb 18.
• Detached from the Perseverance, Ingenuity had to rely on its own solar-powered battery to run a vital heater to protect its unshielded electrical components from freezing and cracking during the bitter Martian night, when temperatures can plunge as low as minus 90 degrees Celsius


9. IS kidnaps 19 people in Syria

• The militant Islamic State (IS) group on April 7, 2021 abducted 19 people in the centre of war-torn Syria, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
• The militants attacked Syrian government forces in the Badia desert, before kidnapping eight policemen and 11 civilians from a small village.
• Syria`s state news agency SANA said the militants had taken `a number of inhabitants` from the village of al-Saanin Hama province, af ter they went looking for truffles, fungi used in cooking.
• Others were wounded and taken to hospital, it said


10. `Chernobyl` and `Harry Potter` actor Paul Ritter dies at 54

• Versatile British actor Paul Ritter, who appeared in the Harry Potter franchise and played a key figure behind nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, has died, his agent said on April 7, 2021.
• He was 54 and had been suffering from a brain tumor.
• A familiar face to British television viewers and theatregoers, Ritter played Man in Goodman, the eccentric father of a London Jewish family, in the Channel 4 sitcom Friday Night Dinner
