1. Pak, Lanka agree to enhance bilateral ties

• Imran Khan says Pakistan will find ways and means to enhance connectivity through China-Pakistan Economic Corridor for Sri Lanka
• Imran Khan, Sri Lankan PM Mahinda Rajapaksa hold one-on-one meeting in Colombo
• Rajapaksa says we agreed to enhance bilateral ties in fields of economy, trade, investment, education, defence, tourism, and aviation
• Acknowledges Pakistan’s support to curb terrorism from Sri Lankan soil
• Pakistan, Sri Lanka sign several MoUs in various sectors


2. Pakistan ranks low on list of countries with most tests

• As Pakistan continues to see a fall in Covid-19 cases, a website has placed the country on the 29th position in the list of 30 countries that have conducted the most number of tests per million population (PMP).
• The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) has, meanwhile, recorded 1,050 patients who contracted the virus and 41 deaths over the last 24 hours
• Also, Pakistan is going to hold the first international conference dedicated to Covid-19 vaccine in which principal investigating officers of various vaccines will share their research papers.


3. NA passes bill to ban corporal punishment in Islamabad

• The National Assembly on February 23, 2021 passed a bill to ban corporal punishment in educational institutions and seminaries in the capital and referred another bill seeking to make compulsory the teaching of Arabic language in educational institutions to the standing committee concerned.
• The ICT Prohibition of Corporal Punishment Bill calls for banning all forms of corporal punishment in educational institutions, including formal, non formal and seminaries, in both the public and private sectors as well as childcare institutions and rehabilitation centres.


4. Nepal`s Supreme Court orders reinstatement of parliament

• Nepal`s Supreme Court on February 23, 2021 ordered the reinstatement of parliament after it was dissolved by the prime minister, in a ruling likely to thrust the Himalayan nation into a political crisis.
• The order came in response to several cases filed with the court charging that Prime Minister Khadga Prasad Oli`s decision to dissolve the legislature was unconstitutional.
• The court said a meeting of the reinstated parliament must be called within 13 days.


5. Nasa releases Mars landing video, calls it `stuff of dreams`

• Nasa on February 22, 2021 released the first high-quality video of a spacecraf t landing on Mars, a three-minute trailer showing the enormous orange and white parachute hurtling open and the red dust kicking up as rocket engines lowered the rover to the surf ace.
• The footage was so good and the images so breathtaking that members of the rover team said they felt like they were riding along


6. German Catholics appoint first female secretary

• Germany`s Catholic bishops elected a woman as their general secretary for the first time on February 23, 2021, in a decision hailed as a `strong sign` of modernisation in the crisis-hit Church.
• Theologian Beate Gilles, 50, will succeed Hans Langend oerfer on July 1 as a high ranking official charged with implementing decisions taken by the bishops.


7. IAEA `deeply concerned` over Iran`s `undeclared` N-site

• The UN`s atomic watchdog said on Tuesday that it was `deeply concerned` by the possible presence of nuclear material at an undeclared site in Iran.
• `The agency is deeply concerned that undeclared nuclear material may have been present at this undeclared location and that such nuclear material remains unreported by Iran under its safeguards agreement,` a report from the International Atomic Energy Agency said


8. Yamani, the author of Saudi oil power, dies at 90

• Saudi Arabia`s Sheikh Zaki Yamani, the embodiment of the ascent of Arab petroleum power and the f ace of the 1973 oil embargo that brought the West to its knees, died in London on February 23, 2021. He was 90.
• Yamani was a witness to the 1975 assassination of King Faisal who had plucked him, a non-royal, from obscurity to be oil minister. Later the same year Yamani was kidnapped at an OPEC meeting by Ilyich Ramirez Sanchez, known as Carlos the Jackal


9. Ukraine takes Russia to Europe court over ‘targeted assassinations’

• Ukraine has accused Russia of targeted assassinations of “perceived opponents” in a case lodged at the European Court of Human Rights, the latest salvo by Kiev in a barrage of legal complaints against Moscow.
• The case, which was filed last week, accuses Russia of carrying out “state-authorised” assassinations “in Russia and on the territory of other states… outside a situation of armed conflict”, the court said February 23, 2021

• Haider Ali was the toast of the Peshawar Zalmi with a timely cameo that carried his team to a sensational six-wicket victory over a shell-shocked Multan Sultans in an HBL Pakistan Super League 6 fixture here on February 23, 2021 night.
• Chasing a daunting target of 194, Peshawar Zalmi who celebrated their first win in two matches paced their innings to perfection and won the match in 19 overs as Haider clobbered 24 from just eight balls in a frenetic finish and fittingly helped the 2017 champions over the line with a cracking six over long-off against Shahnawaz Dhani, who was thrashed for 24 runs in that dramatic climax.
