1. Nusrat Shaheen elected senator unopposed on vacant seat

• A political worker of the ruling Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), Nusrat Shaheen, was on January 5, 2021 elected unopposed a member of the Senate in the by-election on a vacant seat of the upper house of parliament from Balochistan.
• The seat had fallen vacant after the death of three-time elected senator from Balochistan on tickets of different political parties, Kalsoom Parveen. She died after getting infected by Covid19 last month.
• Ms Shaheen will enjoy the Senate membership just for 57 days as the term of this Senate seat will end on March 11.

2. Islamabad, Kabul urged to review policies for bolstering Pak-Afghan trade

• Traders and exporters of Pakistan and Afghanistan have urged Islamabad and Kabul to review policies to further improve mutual trade and economic relations between the two neighbouring countries.
• Further the traders Identified bottlenecks that were hampering bilateral and transit trade, including complicated regulations and procedures, strict policies and cumbersome goods’ clearing processes.
• This demand was made during a joint meeting of Pak-Afghan traders held under chairmanship of the Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) president Sherbaz Bilour here at the chamber house on January 5, 2021

3. KP prayer leaders to get monthly honorarium from next financial year

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has decided to start giving Rs10,000 monthly honorarium to each prayer leader in the province from July 1.
• The scheme would benefit around 22,000 prayer leaders. The provincial government will spend an amount of approximately Rs23 million per month and Rs2.5 billion per annum on the scheme

4. Cabinet approves vaccine purchase on emergency basis

• Prime Minister’s Advisor on Health Dr Farrukh Sultan January 5, 2021 briefed the federal cabinet on overall situation relating to coronavirus in the country and initiatives of the government being taken to keep a check on rising cases of Covid-19.
• The federal cabinet directed Ministry of Health to purchase vaccines of Covid-19 on emergency footings.
• The federal cabinet also condemned recent terror attack in Balochistan’s Mach district and offered Fateha for martyred miners and Osama Satti, who died of in police shooting in Islamabad, besides the martyrs of the Armed Forces

5. Move in US to strip Pakistan of major ally status has little support

• A Republican lawmaker has moved a bill in the 117th Congress, seeking to strip Pakistan of its status as a major non-Nato ally of the United States.
• The US media, however, pointed out that `the legislation comes at a moment of uncertainty over the incoming Biden administration`s posture towards Pakistan after four years of tumultuous relations in the Trump era

6. US hits Iran with fresh sanctions as Trump term nears end

• The United States on Tuesday blacklisted a Chinese company that makes elements for steel production, 12 Iranian steel and metals makers and three foreign based sales agents of a major Iranian metals and mining holding company, seeking to deprive Iran of revenues as US President Donald Trump`s term winds down
• In a statement, the US Treasury Department named the China-based company as Kaifeng Pingmei New Carbon Materials Technology Co Ltd. (KFCC), saying it specialised in the manufacture of carbon materials and provided thousands of metric tonnes of materials to Iranian steel companies between December 2019 and June 2020.

7. Gulf countries welcome Qatar back into fold

• Gulf leaders signed a `solidarity and stability` deal on January 5, 2021 after the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Qatar publicly embraced, bringing Doha back into the regional fold after a three-year rift.
• Saudi Arabia had led a coalition of countries in the Gulf and beyond to cut ties and transport links with Qatar in June 2017, charging that it was too close to Iran and backed radical Islamist groups allegations that Doha denied

8. Kabul team in Doha as Taliban accused of stalling dialogue

• Afghan government negotiators returned to Doha on January 5, 2021 for a second round of talks with the Taliban after Kabul accused the insurgents of stalling the negotiations.
• Months of deliberations between the two sides have yielded little so far, although both sides agreeing what to discuss in the next round was viewed as a breakthrough

9. Iran steps up nuclear programme, holds South Korean tanker

• Iran said January 5, 2021 it had stepped up uranium enrichment beyond the limits of its nuclear deal with world powers, amid heightened tensions with arch-foe the United States and after Iran seized a South Korean tanker in strategic Gulf waters.
• The Islamic republic said it was now refining uranium to 20 percent purity — far above the level permitted under its 2015 agreement, but significantly below the 90 percent required for an atomic bomb — in a step Washington condemned as “nuclear extortion”

10. Iranian funds worth $9.5B frozen in S. Korea

• South Korea has frozen over $9 billion an Iranian funds under US sanctions over Tehran’s nuclear program, local media reported on January 5, 2021.
• Around 3 trillion won ($2.7 billion) deposited by the Seoul branch of Iran’s Bank Mellat has been held by the Bank of Korea, while about $7 billion worth of Iranian oil money was frozen by the Industrial Bank of Korea and Woori Bank, according to Yonhap News Agency.
