1. Sindh starts vaccination drive from Feb 3

• The Sindh government on January 29, 2021 announced launching Covid19 vaccination programme next week in 10 districts of the province and unveiled a detailed phase-wise plan to inoculate people, beginning with 170,000 frontline health workers.
• In addition to the 82,359 doses to be received from the Centre, the provincial government also shared its plan for the procurement ofCovid-19 vaccine on its own though federal authorities are yet to respond to its request for permission for the procurement


2. Pakistan reaffirms opposition to nuclear ban treaty

• Pakistan on January 29, 2021 reiterated its opposition to the nuke ban treaty and emphasised that it was not bound by any of its provisions.
• `The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which was adopted in July 2017, was negotiated outside the established UN disarmament negotiating forums,` the Foreign Office said while elaborating Pakistan`s position on the treaty that took effect from Jan 22, 2021.
• The treaty was the result of efforts of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) that stressed the catastrophic humanitarian and environmental consequences of the nukes


3. Bilquis Edhi declared `Person of the Decade`

• Philanthropist and humanitarian Bilquis Edhi has been declared the `Person of the Decade`, along with UN rapporteur on human rights Prof Yanghee Lee and the US ethicist Stephen Soldz by an international organisation.
• As per the domino effect verdict, announced on January 29, 2021 by the Impact Hallmarks [lH], Bilquis Edhi was declared the most impactful person of the first two decades of the 21st century.
• Bilquis Bano Edhi is a professional nurse and she heads the Bilquis Edhi Foundation.


4. Travel curbs on six countries extended till Feb 28

• The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA) on January 29, 2021 extended travel restrictions on category-C countries South Africa, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Ireland, Portugal and the Netherlands-till February 28, though travellers from these countries can still come to Pakistan if allowed by the National Command and Operation Centre.
• The PCAA also reduced the PCR test requirement for the countries categorised as B and C from 96 to 72 hours


5. China will `no longer recognise` UK-issued passport for Hong Kongers

• China on January 29, 2021 said it will `no longer recognise` the British National (Overseas) passport for Hong Kongers, as Britain prepares to offer millions of former colonial subjects a way to escape Beijing`s crackdown on dissent.
• From Sunday, those with a BN(O) passport and their dependents will be able to apply online for a visa allowing them to live and work in the United Kingdom. After five years they can then apply for citizenship


6. WHO begins virus probe with fieldwork in Wuhan

• Experts from the World Health Organisation visited a Wuhan hospital on January 29, 2021 as the fieldwork began in a closely watched coronavirus origins probe that will take in a food market presumed to be `ground zero` of the pandemic.
• The WHO investigation has been hobbled by delays, and there are fears over access and the strength of evidence a year after the virus emerged in the central Chinese city


7. Biden pledge to reopen PLO mission in Washington faces legal hurdles

• US President Joe Biden`s plan to work to reopen the Palestinians` diplomatic mission in Washington could be held up over a law that exposes Palestinian officials to US anti-terror lawsuits, officials and advisers to the Palestinians say.
• The Biden administration hopes to repair relations with the Palestinians after a sharp deterioration under former President Donald Trump, who closed the Palestine Liberation Organisation`s Washington office in 2018 and cut millions of dollars in aid to the West Bank and Gaza Strip.


8. Kosovo to establish diplomatic ties with Israel next week

• Kosovo and Israel will establish diplomatic relations next Monday, months after a US-brokered deal on mutual recognition, the foreign ministry in Pristina said on January 29, 2021.
• In September, former US President Donald Trump announced at a summit originally organised to strike a deal between Kosovo and its former war foe Serbia that Muslim-majority Kosovo and the Jewish state would establish diplomatic ties


9. Italy revokes approval for arms sales to Saudi Arabia, UAE

• Italy on January 29, 2021 revoked approval for arms sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates over the conflict in Yemen, making permanent an 18-month temporary suspension.
• `Today I am announcing that the government has revoked the authorisations underway for the export of missiles and aircraft bombs to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates,` Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said


10. SA buckle as Nauman-Yasir duo earn vital Test win for Pakistan

• Head coach Misbah-ul-Haq must have heaved a sigh of relief at Pakistan`s fine and convincing victory against South Africa in the first Test at the National Stadium on January 29, 2021.
• Castigated and cornered in recent weeks for his below par performance as head coach, as well as of the other support staff working under him, Misbah must have felt a lot lighter and happier when comeback guy Fawad Alam cut spinner Keshav Maharaj to the point boundary to wrap up a momentous seven-wicket victory which took the hosts 1-0 ahead in the two-match Test series against South Africa
