1. Pakistan to send medical aid to Palestine

• Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain May 18, 2021 said Pakistan would send coronavirus (COVID-19) and medical emergency relief assistance to Palestine on humanitarian grounds to mitigate sufferings of innocent people there.
• While talking to reporters here, the minister said that the decision to this effect was taken in the Federal Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday

2. Govt decides to begin debate on electoral reforms in NA

• The federal cabinet on Tuesday decided to initiate the process of electoral reforms by tabling the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Report 2019-20 in the National Assembly for starting a debate on it from May 24 even if the opposition abstains.
• At the cabinet meeting, which was chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan, the controversial Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR) project also came under discussion and the premier expressed displeasure why Aviation Minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan spoke to the press on the matter.
• The cabinet members were apprised of the official visit of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi to the Muslim states before his address at the UN General Assembly where he would convey the prevailing grief and anger in the Muslim world against Israel over the killing of innocent Palestinians

3. Remittances hit all-time monthly high in April

• The flow of remittances sent by overseas Pakistanis to the country rose to an all-time monthly high of $2.8 billion in April, 56 per cent higher than the inflow during the same month of previous fiscal, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reported on May 18, 2021.
• Since the beginning of the fiscal 2021, the monthly remittances remained over $2bn which enabled the country to receive record over $24bn in the 10months of the current fiscal while it also helped the country keep the current account surplus, the biggest achievement on external front of the economy.
• According to the SBP, the remittances during the first 10 months of the current fiscal have crossed the remittances received during entire fiscal of FY20.

4. Pakistan`s population is 207.68m, shows 2017 census result

• The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) has posted the final results of the 6th Population and Housing Census 2017 on its website, according to which the country`s total population stands at 207.68 million, with an annual growth rate of 2.4 per cent.
• The population includes 106.018m males, 101.344m females and 321,744 transgender persons.
• `The Council of Common Interests (CCI) on Dec 16, 2016 decided to conduct the census in two phases with the support of the armed forces. The PBS demarcated the whole country into small compact areas called census clocks comprising 200 to 250 houses on an average, with a total number of over 1.68 million blocks with well-defined boundaries and maps. The entire delimitation process was carried out with the close coordination of provincial governments, local governments, revenue department and district administrations,` the bureau states on its website

5. `Climate change to cost Pakistan $3.8bn yearly`

• Warning of an increase of up to 2.5 degrees Celsius in temperature over the next two decades, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and World Bank (WB) have estimated that Pakistan is facing up to $3.8 billion in annual economic loss due to climate change.
• A joint study titled `Climate Risk Country Profile` for Pakistan released by the two international lending agencies on May 18, 2021 put Pakistan among the top risk-prune countries in terms of increase in average temperatures and resultant economic and social losses

6. Moeed Yusuf made National Security Adviser

• Prime Minister Imran Khan has appointed Dr Moeed Yusuf as the National Security Adviser, an official said on May 18, 2021.
• According to a May 17 notification issued by the cabinet division, Dr Yusuf would, in the capacity of NSA, enjoy the status of a federal minister.
• He is the eighth person and the third civilian to hold this position since March 1969, when Maj Gen Ghulam Omar was appointed as the first NSA.

7. Pakistan, several other nations to take united stance at UNGA: FM

• Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that Pakistan has joined hands with Palestine, Sudan and Turkey to take a united stance at the Thursday session of the United Nations General Assembly on Palestine.
• The foreign minister is expected to arrive here in New York along with his counterparts from Turkey and two other countries on Wednesday to participate in the emergency session called by the UN General Assembly.
• Mr Qureshi, who met his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu in Ankara on Tuesday, said Pakistan was establishing contacts with different countries in a bid to pressure Israel to stop attacks on Gaza, which have been continuing since May 10.

8. PIA resumes flight operation to Zhob

• The national flag carrier Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) on May 18, 2021 resumed its domestic flights to Zhob, making Zhob airport functional after a gap of three years.
• The first ATR flight PK-528 carrying 36 passengers, which operated from Karachi International Airport, landed at Zhob airport on Tuesday.
• Balochistan Minister for Livestock Mitha Khan Kakar, PIA general manager Balochistan Bilal Afzal, Station Manager Zhob airport Abdul Shakoor, Assistant Commissioner Zhob Rohana Kakar and other officials received the passengers

9. Israel drops more bombs on Gaza, Palestinians retaliate with rockets

• Heavy air strikes and rocket fire in the Israel-Gaza conflict claimed more lives on both sides Tuesday as tensions flared in Palestinian “day of anger” protests in Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.
• The UN Security Council was to hold an emergency meeting amid a diplomatic push to end the fighting, a day after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Israel would “continue striking at the terrorist targets”.
• Israel’s intense bombing campaign has killed 213 Palestinians, including 61 children, and wounded more than 1,400 people in Gaza in more than a week of fighting against Hamas, according to the health ministry in Gaza

10. US lawmakers plead for evacuation of Afghan allies before pullout

• US lawmakers are pleading for the evacuation of thousands of Afghan allies, fearing a bloodbath as America ends its longest war, but the administration says it does not want to set off a panic.
• `We cannot allow Kabul to be another Saigon,` Representative Mike McCaul, the top Republican on the House foreign affairs committee, referring to the chaotic helicopter lifts of people as US-allied South Vietnam fell in 1975.
• McCaul showed a text message from a US Special Forces soldier about an Afghan commando who worked alongside him and was fearful that the Taliban would kill him after September, the deadline set by President Joe Biden for withdrawal
