1. Pakistan grants refuge to 46 more Afghan soldiers

• Amid a volatile situation in Afghanistan, the Pakistan Army has provided `refuge and safe passage` to as many as 46 soldiers and officers of the Afghan National Army (ANA) and Border Police who lost their military posts along the border.
• A statement issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) on July 26, 2021 explained that a local ANA commander opposite Arundu, Chitral, had requested help for the 46 soldiers including five officers as `they were unable to hold their military posts along the Pak-Afghan international border due to evolving security situation in Afghanistan`. The Pakistan Army contacted the Afghan authorities for the relevant information and necessary formalities, the statement added


2. Saudi Arabia`s foreign minister arrives today

• Saudi Arabia`s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, accompanied by a delegation of senior officials of the Saudi government, will arrive here on July 27, 2021.
• According to the Foreign Office, an invitation for the visit was extended by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. During the visit, the two foreign ministers will exchange views on bilateral relations and regional and international issues.
• The Saudi foreign minister will also call on other dignitaries during the visit


3. Door-to-door vaccination campaign starts

• The Punjab government on July 26, 2021 kicked off a door-to-door vaccination campaign in five major high-risk districts of the province -Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, Multan and Gujranwala.
• Health teams and the volunteers have been assigned the task to convince and vaccinate 40 per cent population of four districts, including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan and Gujanwala, and 70 per cent of Rawalpindi.
• In Lahore, Punjab Health Minister Prof Yasmin Rashid launched the door-to-door vaccination drive by inaugurating a first centre at Shah Jamal where Deputy Commissioner Mudasar Riaz Malikwas also present


4. Afghan trade resumes as Pakistan reopens Chaman border

• Pakistan on July 26, 2021 reopened its border with Afghanistan at Chaman, resuming regular Afghan transit and other legal trade activities.
• The border was closed by Pakistani authorities after Taliban captured the Afghan border district of Spin Boldak and Wesh following fierce fighting with the Afghan National Army in the second week of the current month.
• The capture of the border town caused suspension of all trade and traffic between the two countries.
• Hundreds of trucks carrying Afghan transit trade goods were stuck in Chaman


5. 12pc households have at least one facility of digital devices

• Nearly 12 per cent of households in the country, according to a government survey, have reported having at least one facility such as computer, laptop and tablet, making it least penetration of information and communication technologies in the country.
• The Pakistan Social and Living Standards Measurement (PSLM) survey 2019-20, conducted by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), covered 176,790 households across rural and urban communities, collecting information on a range of social sector issues information technology, education and health by facilities and services.


6. IT exports cross record $2bn mark

• Pakistan`s export s of information technology grew by 47.4 per cent to cross the $2 billion mark for the first time in the country`s history in the outgoing fiscal year.
• In absolute terms, the IT exports reached $2.12bn in 202021 as against $1.44bn in the preceding year, according to data released by Commerce Ministry on Monday.
• `I want to congratulate our IT exporters for crossing the $2bn export mark for the first time in our history, Commerce Adviser Razak Dawood said in a statement on July 26, 2021


7. World Bank to finance extra Covid jabs for poor nations

• A new World Bank financing mechanism will allow developing countries to purchase Covid-19 vaccines collectively through the Covax facility, the scheme announced on July 26, 2021.
• Covax was set up to ensure 92 developing territories could access coronavirus vaccines to fight the pandemic, with the cost covered by donors.
• The new mechanism will allow those countries to buy additional doses on top of the subsidised ones they will already receive via Covax.


8. Russia eyes free trade zone on islands disputed by Japan

• Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 26, 2021 visited the disputed Kuril Islands and said authorities wanted to establish a free economic zone there, sparking a protest from Japan.
• The Kurils, which lie north of Japan`s Hokkaido island, have been controlled by Moscow since they were seized by Soviet troops in the dying days of World War II.
• The territorial dispute has kept the two countries from signing a peace accord that would formally end their wartime hostilities.


9. TTP maintains ties with Afghan Taliban, says report

• The banned militant group Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) still has about 6,000 trained fighters on the Afghan side of the border, warns a report prepared for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
• The 28th report of the UN Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team also confirms the presence of hundreds of anti-Beijing Muslim militants close to Afghanistan`s border with China.
• The report was submitted to the UNSC this week under a UN mandate that requires the monitoring team to prepare detailed, periodical reports on militant activities in various regions of the world


10. Schoolgirl scoops gold as Japan top medals table

• Japan struck more gold on July 26, 2021 to lead the medals table as sentiment towards the pandemic delayed Tokyo Olympics appeared to shift, and local fans defied organisers to grab a glimpse of the Games.
• The hosts now have eight golds, one more than the US and two ahead of third placed China.
• Pint-sized 13-year-old Momiji Nishiya took gold in street skateboarding new to the Olympics in Tokyo while in one of the Games` staple sports a `Terminator` hunted down a dominator to set the swimming pool alight
