1. Govt extends lockdown till mid-Ramazan

• As the confirmed coronavirus cases jumped past 11,700 with 248 deaths, the government on April 24, 2020 decided to extend lockdown till the middle of Ramazan while cautioning the nation that the anti-virus fight had entered a decisive phase that would set the future course of action regarding the restrictions.
• `Today we have decided to extend restrictions or lockdown for another 15 days till May 9,` said federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar while briefing the media about the decisions taken by the Centre and provinces at a meeting held at the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).
• He said the second extension in the lockdown was made with consensus though some provinces were demanding longer and some shorter extension in lockdown. `But it was a consensus decision in the meeting [attended by the prime minister and four chief ministers and officials] that lockdown should be extended till May 9,` said Mr Umar, who heads the NCOC


2. 874 sentenced to death in one year: report

• Hundreds of model courts functioning across the country have decided around 145,086 cases, including 12,075 murder trials and 23,072 narcotics cases, during the past one year, it emerged on April 24, 2020.
• Established for swift disposal of cases, the courts awarded death sentence to 874 and life imprisonment to 2,616 criminals between April 1, 2019 and March 30, 2020.
• According to a one-year performance report of the model courts presented by District and Sessions Judge Sohail Nasir, who is director general of Model Courts of Pakistan, the 442 model courts, including 173 model criminal courts, recorded testimonies of 248,441 witnesses during the year.
• The courts are deciding the murder trial in 30 days. Likewise, civil matters are also being decided in a very short span of time.


3. UNHCR adjusts Pakistan plan to deal with virus crisis

• The UN refugee agency said on April 24, 2020 it had rapidly adjusted its country programme in Pakistan and undertaken immediate actions to respond to Covid-19 emergency in the country.
• `We remain deeply concerned by the pandemic and the impact that it`s having on the lives of refugees in Pakistan and the communities that host them. During this past month, all of us at UNHCR have been going the extra mile with a singular mindset to stay, deliver and support the most needy in an already vulnerable community,` said the UNHCR Deputy Representative, Iain Hall.
• UNHCR`s robust field presence in locations such as Peshawar and Quetta, as well as Dalbandin, Haripur, Kohat and Loralai, is crucial to communicating and providing direct assistance to refugee communities


4. KP govt makes face masks mandatory in public

• The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on April 24, 2020 decided that the people would have to wear face masks in public, while the shops and businesses exempted from lockdown would function until 4pm during the fasting month of Ramazan as part of efforts to stem the spread of novel coronavirus.
• The decision was made in a meeting of the Provincial Task Force on Covid-19 here with Chief Minister Mahmood Khan in the chair.
• Ministers Taimur Saleem Jhagra and Shaukat Yousafzai, adviser to the CM Ajmal Wazir, Peshawar Corps Commander Lt-General Nauman Mahmood, chief secretary Dr Kazim Niaz, Inspector General of Police Sanaullah Abbasi and senior military and civil of ficers attended the meeting


5. ADB to lend $1.7bn for pandemic shock

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to provide about $1.7 billion by the end of calendar year almost half of it by June to help Pakistan absorb the fiscal shocks from the Coronavirus pandemic.
• Ministry of Economic Affairs (MEA) on April 24, 2020 said in a statement that the ADB has promised $1.7bn support to Pakistan for Covid-19 response. This will include a budgetary support of $800 million to be approved by June this year and another $900m by December.
• The statement said the ADB would extend budgetary support at a special concessionary rate. The decision was reached following a virtual meeting between Minister for Economic Affairs Makhdoom Khusro Bakhtiyar and ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa.


6. Azam Suleman appointed Secretary Interior Division

• The federal government on April 24, 2020 appointed senior PAS officer Maj (R) Azam Suleman as Secretary Interior Division.
• He had previously served at the same position in the Interior Division before he was transferred and posted as Chief Secretary Punjab. Maj (R) Azam Suleman assumed charge as Punjab Chief Secretary in November 2019. He served at the top most position only for five months.
• He has replaced Yousaf Naseem Khokhar who was transferred and posted as new Secretary Commerce.
• On April 23, 2020 the federal government appointed Jawad Rafique Malik as Punjab’s new Chief Secretary in place of Maj (R) Azam Suleman reportedly on the request of Punjab Chief Minister Sardar Usman Buzdar


7. Chinese doctors with medical supplies, equipment arrive in Pakistan

• A team of Chinese doctors carrying medical supplies and equipment has arrived in Pakistan by two special aircraft.
• The Chinese doctors are headed by Major General Huang Qingzhen and have expertise in treating infectious diseases. The Chinese team will support Pakistan’s efforts in fighting COVID-19 situation for the coming two months.
• Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Nadeem Raza along with other senior military officials welcomed the team on arrival. The Chinese support reaffirms that being ‘Iron Brothers’ and ‘All-Weather’ friends, Pakistan and China have always helped each other in the time of need


8. World leaders launch WHO plan to curb Covid-19; US stays away

• World leaders pledged on April 24, 2020 to accelerate work on tests, drugs and vaccines against Covid-19 and to share them around the globe, but the United States did not take part in the launch of the World Health Organisation (WHO) initiative.
• French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa were among those who joined a video conference to launch what the WHO had billed as a `landmark collaboration` to fight the pandemic.
• The aim is to speed development of safe and effective drugs, tests and vaccines to prevent, diagnose and treat Covid-19, the lung disease caused be the novel coronavirus and ensure equal access to treatments for rich and poor.


9. Sindh Assembly member tests positive for coronavirus

• Jamat e Islami Member Sindh Assembly Syed Abdul Rasheed on April 24, 2020 tested positive for coronavirus, he confirmed in a video message.
• He said that he was participating in coronavirus relief activities with his other party fellows and was insisted by his aides for test and was tested positive, he said he has no symptoms at all. The MPA, who is also JI Karachi South Ameer has put himself in self-quarantine at his house. Abdul Rasheed also requested those who were in touch with him in past few days to get themselves tested. He appealed to the masses to pray for his early recovery


10. Sunlight destroys coronavirus quickly, say US scientists

• The new coronavirus is quickly destroyed by sunlight, according to new research announced by a senior US official on April 23, 2020, though the study has not yet been made public and awaits external evaluation.
• William Bryan, science and technology advisor to the Department of Homeland Security secretary, told reporters at the White House that government scientists had found ultraviolet rays had a potent impact on the pathogen, offering hope that its spread may ease over the summer.
• “Our most striking observation to date is the powerful effect that solar light appears to have on killing the virus, both surfaces and in the air,” he said
