1. Yaum-i-Istehsal observed across Pakistan
• People across Pakistan on August 5, 2020 observed Yaum-i-Istehsal and condemned the Indian government for revoking special status of occupied Kashmir.
• A large number of rallies and seminars were held in cities of the country to mark the first anniversary of abrogation of Article 70 and 35A of the Indian constitution.
• Carrying flags of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir and banners inscribed with slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian forces who have been committing atrocities against innocent Kashmiris in the occupied valley, participants of the rallies marched on the main roads and streets.
2. Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri appointed FO spokesman
• The Foreign Office on August 5, 2020 notified Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri as its new spokesman.
• Mr Chaudhri replaces Aisha Farooqui, who is reportedly proceeding on a training course.
• Mr Chaudhri is also holding the charge of director general of the South Asia directorate at the FO. He will hold both assignments simultaneously.
• `It has been decided that Mr ZahidHafeez Chaudhri, Director General (SA & SAARC) in addition to his own duties will also look after the work of the spokesperson vice Ms Aisha Farooqui with immediate effect and until further orders,` the notification read.
3. Pakistan condemns temple`s construction at Babri mosque site
• The Foreign Office on August 5, 2020 condemned the construction of `Ram Mandir` on the site of historic Babri Masjid, saying it was part of India`s journey towards the setting up of a `Hindu Rashtra` at the cost of its secular credentials.
• The statement came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a grand temple in Ayodhya at the site of the historic 16th century Babri Mosque that was demolished by Hindu extremists in 1992 on the pretext that it was the birthplace of Ram, a Hindu deity.
• The start of the construction comes after a protracted legal battle between the Muslims and Hindus in India. The Indian Supreme Court had in November last year awarded the site to Hindus, while allocating an alternate five-acre plot to the Muslims to build a new mosque.
4. LWMC chairman resigns
• Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) Chairman Riaz Hameed Chaudhry on August 5, 2020 resigned from his position citing `personal reasons`.
• Mr Chaudhry was reappointed as LWMC chairman for his second three year term on May 18 for a term of three years just 10 weeks ago. Earlier, he was appointed as LWMC chairman in July 2019.
• Mr Chaudhry has resigned at a time, when the LWMC was amassing appreciation for ensuring `zero waste` in Lahore.
5. PIA to partially resume flights to UK from 14th
• The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will partially resume its flights to the United Kingdom from Aug 14 with a hired plane.
• PIA spokesman Abdullah Hafeez said on August 5, 2020 that an agreement had been signed between Portugal`s airline and the national carrier.
• He said the PIA would operate flights with an Airbus A330, having a seating capacity of more than 300 passengers.
• `The PIA has hired a plane and crew from a European company to operate flights using PIA call sign and slots,` he said, adding: `Due to public demand, the national flag carrier is resuming its flights.The plane would have economy and business classes with comfortable seating capacity, he said.
6. Cataclysmic blast caused damage across half of Beirut, left 300,000 homeless
• The huge blast in Beirut on Tuesday left 300,000 people homeless and caused damage across half of the city estimated to cost more than $3 billion, its governor said on August 5, 2020.
• `I think there are between 250,000 and 300,000 people who are now without homes,` said Marwan Aboud, adding that the estimated cost of the damage from Tuesday`s explosion was between $3.0 billion and $5.0 billion dollars.
• Wife of Dutch ambassador seriously injured The wife of the Dutch ambassador to Lebanon was seriously injured by a huge blast that took place in Beirut`s port on Tuesday, the Dutch Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
7. UNSC reviews Kashmir situation as protesters condemn Indian action
• The UN Security Council (UNSC) held an urgent meeting on August 5, 2020 to review the situation arising out of the Aug 5, 2019, siege of Kashmir by India.
• The closed-door, 15-member meeting was held at the request of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
• `This 3rd meeting in a year by the UN Security Council serves as a stark repudiation to the Indian claim that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter,` Mr Qureshi said in a tweet after the meeting. `It further reaffirms the validity of UN resolutions on the Kashmiri`s right to self determination through an impartial plebiscite.
8. Modi launches construction of temple at site of Babri mosque
• Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched on August 5, 2020 construction of a Hindu temple at the site of a historic mosque that has sparked some of the country`s bloodiest communal violence.
• The ceremony in Ayodhya, with Modi surrounded by saffron-clad priests, came on the first anniversary of the removal of the special status enjoyed by occupied Kashmir.
• For his Hindu nationalist supporters, both steps confirm Modi as a `decisive leader`.
9. Rajapaksa family set to consolidate power in Sri Lanka after virus-hit polls
• Sri Lankan`s voted in large numbers on August 5, 2020 despite the coronavirus pandemic as the ruling Rajapaksa brothers sought to expand their mandate through the virus-delayed parliamentary polls.
• The election postponed twice due to the epidemic closed at 5pm local time (1130 GMT) af ter 10 hours of voting, with strict hygiene measures in place to prevent the spread of the disease.
• President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his older brother Mahinda, the prime minister, are seeking a two thirds parliamentary majority to roll back constitutional changes introduced by the previous administration that limit the president`s powers.
10. No-ball technology being trialled in England-Pakistan Tests
• Front-foot no-ball technology that will see the TV umpire alone deciding whether a bowler has over-stepped will be used for the first time on a trial basis in Test cricket during the England-Pakistan series, which started on August 5, 2020, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has said.
• Currently, the responsibility for calling no-balls lies with the on-field umpires.
• They can, however, call on their colleague in the replay booth for assistance if they feel a wicket may have been taken with an illegal delivery. TV umpire Michael Gough made the first call in the brief afternoon session of by relaying to on-field umpires that James Anderson had overstepped
