1. COP28 shifts gear with focus on global health

The United Arab Emirates and several charities at the UN climate summit on Sunday offered $777 million in financing for eradicating neglected tropical diseases, as physicians, activists and country representatives called for greater efforts to protect people from the increasing health and safety risks posed by climate change. Climate-related factors `have become one of the greatest threats to human health in the 21st century`, COP28 President Sultan Ahmed-Al-Jaber said in a statement.
In her remarks, the World Health Organisation`s (WHO) Dr Maria Neira said, `Everyone needs to know this is not just about climate, polar bears and glaciers. This is about my lungs and your lungs


2. Lahore tops global air pollution chart

The provincial metropolis of Lahore was ranked as the most polluted city in the world at 8:30pm on Sunday, according to the air quality index (AQI).
The AQI was reported to be at an unhealthy level of 266 from 9am to 8:30pm. The primary pollutants were PM2.5 and PM10, with concentrations of 55 µg/m3 and 118 µg/m3.
Nitrogen Dioxide and Ozone levels were reported to be fair, with concentrations of 22 µg/m3 and 67 µg/m3


3. AJK school wins laurels at COP28 for sustainable farming

A school in Azad Kashmir has won the Zayed Sustainability Prize at the COP28 conference in Dubai.
According to an official statement, the Kashmir Orphan Relief Trust (Kort) Educational and Residential Complex won the award in the Global High Schools (South Asia) category.
The school, built in Mirpur with the support of overseas Pakistanis after the devastating earthquake of 2005, provides education and accommodation to 1,500 orphan children


4. Sindhi Culture Day celebrated across province

Sindhi Culture Day was celebrated with traditional enthusiasm in Karachi and every major city and town of the province on Sunday.
A large number of people, including women and children, converged outside the Karachi Press Club, with some carrying flags of Palestine. They danced to the songs sung by artists, showing longing for Sindh.
This year`s theme pertained to expulsion of illegal immigrants from Sindh

5. Nowhere safe as Israeli army overruns Gaza

Israeli forces overran nearly all parts of the Gaza Strip on Sunday, as more than 700 Palestinians were reported to have been killed after Tel Aviv ended a week-long truce.
A statement from Israeli Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi said that his forces were operating across north and south Gaza, with tanks and soldiers seen moving through the besieged territory over the weekend.

6. WFP seeks over $26m to resettle Afghans

As a senior US official is due in Islamabad on Monday (today) for talks on the resettlement of Afghan refugees, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) is seeking $26.3 million to help the displaced Afghans.

8. Not protecting civilians will be `strategic defeat`, warns Lloyd Austin

Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin has cautioned Israel that it risks a `strategic defeat` if it fails to protect Palestinian civilians in Gaza during the ongoing crisis.
Speaking at the Reagan National Defence Forum in California on Saturday, Mr Austin emphasised the centrality of the civilian population in such unrest, stating, `In this kind of a fight, the centre of gravity is the civilian population.

9. BJP sweeps elections in three northern states; Congress wins in south

India`s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has almost swept the regional elections in three northern states, according to the results announced on Sunday.
As Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Telangana, went to polls last month, the BJP dislodged Congress governments in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and consolidated its hold on Madhya Pradesh the state it has ruled for 18 of the last 20 years. After eviction from Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, Congress is now in power in only one northern state Himachal Pradesh
