1. Pakistan`s case not on IMF agenda till mid-Dec

Pakistan has been unable to secure a place on the schedule of the International Monetary Fund`s (IMF) executive board, at least until mid-December, for the approval of the staff level agreement (SLA) and disbursement of $700 million.
Informed sources said the Ministry of Finance had been trying its best to seek a date in the first week of December to ensure approval of SLA with Pakistan for the first review of the $3bn Standby Arrangement (SBA). They said authorities were pushing at all levels, initially for December 7, and later for a date any time before the Christmas holidays, for the executive board to take up Pakistan`s case before the year-end


2. PM Kakar urges Baloch youth to seize CPEC opportunities

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar on Monday urged the people of Balochistan, especially the youth, to seize the historic development opportunities in their province, emphasising that detractors of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) would soon lose relevance.
He made these remarks at the inauguration ceremony of Pak-China Friendship Hospital and Gwadar Seawater Desalination Plant. PM Kakar said that the CPEC journey would move forward, so joining the development course would be a prudent decision


3. Senate body okays Islamabad Capital Territory Student Unions Bill

Senate Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training on Monday approved a bill regarding revival of students union in Islamabadbased educational institutions.
The Senate committee met here at parliament house Senator Irfan-ul-Haq Siddiqui in the chair.
It unanimously passed the Private Members` Bill titled `The Islamabad Capital Territory Student Unions Bill, 2023,` introduced by Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi


4. Senate panel defers legislation on salt exports

The Senate Standing Committee on Commerce has decided to postpone a proposed legislation that would prohibit the export of unprocessed salt in a move to bolster domestic value addition.
The committee headed by Senator Zeeshan Khanzada has directed that all relevant parties provide constructive recommendations to promote value-added exports. A private billwas moved proposing a ban on the export of raw salt which was deferred for the time being.
The country`s exports of raw salt are between $30 to $50 million per annum

5. Israeli tanks move in to isolate north from south

Dozens of Israeli tanks, armoured personnel carriers and bulldozers rolled into southern Gaza on Monday, witnessessaid, as Tel Aviv launched efforts to sever connections between Deir al Balah in central Gaza and Khan Yunis in the south.
Amin Abu Hawli, 59, said the Israeli vehicles were 2km inside Gaza in the village of al-Qarara, while Moaz Mohammed, 34, said Israeli tanks were moving down the strip`s main north-south highway, the Salah al-Dinroad, with soldiers firing bullets and tank shells at cars and people trying to move through the area

6. Former US ambassador charged with spying for Cuba

A former US ambassador to Bolivia and member of the National Security Council has been charged with spying for Cuba for 40 years, the Justice Department announced on Monday.
The charges against Victor Manuel Rocha, 73, `exposes one of the highest-reaching and longest lasting infiltrations of the United States government by a foreign agent, Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement explaining the charges


7. Putin to visit UAE, S. Arabia this week

Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia this week, Russian news outlet Shot reported on Monday, citing Putin`s aide Yury Ushakov.
The reported visit comes after the OPEC+ group of oil producers, which includes all three countries, agreed last Thursday to voluntary output cuts totalling 2.2 million barrels a day


8. Russian general killed in Ukraine

A Russian general has died while deployed in Ukraine, the governor of Russia`s Voronezh region said on Monday, the latest highranking Russian military figure to die during the 21-month offensive.
`A piercing pain. Major General Vladimir Zavadsky, deputy commander of the 14th Army Corps of the Northern Fleet, died in the line of duty in a special operation zone,` Voronezh governor Alexander Gusev said on Telegram, using the Russian term for its offensive in Ukraine


9. COP28 deliberates financing, carbon credits

Money pledges stacked up at COP28 in Dubai on Monday as delegates sought to address the huge gap between what is needed in climate finance and the amounts so far on offer.
The United Arab Emirates, the host of this year`s conference, pledged to mobilise $270 billion in green finance by 2030 through its banks, and several development banks announced plans to increase their funding efforts, including by agreeing to pause debt repayments if a climate-related disaster hits


10. Israel, Palestinians accuse each other of `genocide` at UN

Israeli and Palestinian representatives at the United Nations on Monday traded accusations of `genocide` over the unrest raging in Gaza, with both sides demanding an international response.
Israeli aggression against Palestinians was repeatedly mentioned during an event at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva ahead of the 75th anniversary of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide
