1. Pakistan reaffirms pledge to help Iran fight terrorism

Pakistan on Monday reaffirmed its commitment to Iran in combating terrorism, recognising it as a shared challenge.
This assurance was extended by caretaker Foreign Minister Jalil Abbas Jilani during a phone call with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
The Foreign Office said that Minister Jilani emphasised Pakistan`s unwavering dedication to collaborating with Iran against the threat of terrorism, a significant obstacle to regional peace and stability


2. SC shuts door on objections to delimitation

Setting aside a Balochistan High Court (BHC) decision, the Supreme Court on Monday held that delimitation of constituencies cannot be questioned after the announcement of the poll schedule by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Headed by acting Chief Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, a three-judge SC bench thus effectively slammed doors of any possible delay in the general elections slated for Feb 8, 2024


3. Afghan Taliban request Fazl to mediate between Kabul and Islamabad

The ruling Afghan Taliban have confirmed inviting Jamiat Ulema-i-IslamFazl leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman to play a mediator`s role between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
In a brief Pashto audio message shared with Pakistani journalists by the media department of the Afghan government, chief spokesman for the regime Zabihullah Mujahid said the `Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan` had officially invited the JUI-F leader to keep abreast of aspirations of the Afghan people and government towards Pakistan and its people


4. Current account turns positive on back of falling imports

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) on Monday reported the first current account surplus for the ongoing fiscal year in November.
Despite low inflows and higher outflows for debt servicing, the current account was in surplus by $9 million in November compared to a deficit of $157m noted in the same month last year.
However, the current account deficit (CAD) narrowed by almost 63pc to $1.16 billion in July-November FY24 from $3.26bn in the same period last year


5. Imran Khan, Asad Umar acquitted in May 25 violence case

Judicial Magistrate of Koral on Monday acquitted former Prime Minister Imran Khan and Asad Umar in a case registered against them related to alleged violence on May 25, 2022.
Mr Khan, Mr Umar and others including Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Faisal Javed, Ali Nawaz Awan, Ali Amin Gandapur and Raja Khurram Nawaz, were nominated as accused in this case

6. Israel becoming isolated amid global outcry over Gaza atrocities

Israel continues to face mounting international pressure over the rising civilian death toll and destruction of hospitals in Gaza, with even staunch allies such as the US, France, UK and Germany voicing disquiet with its brutal and indiscriminate bombing campaign in the besieged enclave.

8. Sisi re-elected as Egyptian president with 89.6pc of vote

Egypt`s President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has won a third term with 89.6 per cent of the vote in the Arab world`s most populous nation, the national election authority said on Monday.
The outcome of the Dec 10-12 poll was widely expected after the former army chief with a fondness for infrastructure mega-projects campaigned against a small field of relative unknowns


9. N. Korea test fires ballistic missile with US in range

North Korea launched another long range ballistic missile on Monday with the potential capability of striking the United States, Seoul and Tokyo officials said, extending a record-breaking number of weapons tests this year that have been condemned by the West.
The firing followed the test of a shorter range missile on Sunday night, with the back-to-back launches coming immediately in the wake of another bout of fearsome rhetoric between North Korea and the US-South Korean allies
