1. Pakistan conducts flight test of Fatah-II rocket

Pakistan on Wednesday conducted a flight test of guided multiple-launch rocket system, Fatah-II, which is being developed as a potential challenger to the missile defence systems in the neighbourhood.
While announcing the test, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) noted that the new rocket system was `equipped with state of the art avionics, sophisticated navigation system and unique flight trajectory`


2. Chief justice is not `master of roster`: SC

The Supreme Court on Wednesday held that the chief justice of Pakistan was not `Master of the Roster` and that he cannot substitute his wisdom with that of the Constitution nor can his opinion prevail over other judges.
In a detailed judgement, the SC said that the enactment of the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure) Act 2023 by parliament does not infringe any fundamental rights, rather facilitates their enforcement

Pakistan`s current economic model is not working since it has fallen behind its peers, significant progress in poverty reduction has now started to reverse, and the benefits of growth have accrued to a narrow elite, observes World Bank Country Director Najy Benhassine.
`There is a broad consensus that action is needed to change policies that have plagued development, benefitted only a few, and led to very volatile and low growth,` Mr Benhassine stated in a Policy Vision article, published in the latest UNDP publication


4. Biometric monitoring reduces teacher absenteeism: ADB

A decline in teacher absenteeism has been witnessed in Punjab and Sindh following the adoption of biometric monitoring at schools and unscheduled inspection visits, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said in a report published on Wednesday.
The report, `Strengthening School Teaching in Pakistan`, however, said further progress could be made by hiring locally based teachers and introducing penalties for tardiness and absenteeism


5. UN launches climate-resilient housing project in Pakistan

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has launched `GHAR (Green Housing Affordable Resilient), an initiative aimed at enhancing the technical capacity of government institutions and renowned academia to design, construct, and manage climate-resilient housing.
UNOPS Pakistan, in partnership with the provincial governments of Sindh, Punjab, and Khyber Pakhtunkhawa (KP), would carry out this initiative through research and development, interactive dialogue between institutes and academia, training, and communication on passive techniques for improving building performance

6. Israeli bombing leaves 195 dead in 24 hours

With 195 deaths reported in just over 24 hours, the Palestinian death toll from indiscriminate Israeli bombardment has crossed 21,000.
On Wednesday, explosions lit up the sky over the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis, as a strike hit a house near Al-Amal hospital, killing 22 people and wounding 34, the Gaza health ministry said


7. Six die in Israeli operation in West Bank

An Israeli operation in a Palestinian refugee camp in the north of the occupied West Bank left six people dead and several others wounded early on Wednesday, according to the Palestinian ministry of health.
`Six martyrs killed by the occupation (Israel) and some who were seriously wounded were transported to the Thabet Thabet government hospi-tal in Tulkarem,` the ministry said in a short statement


8. India bans J&K Muslim League faction

India on Wednesday designated the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction), or MLJK-MA, as an unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities Prevention law, the Scroll news portal said.
The Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) is a separatist organisation led by Hurriyat Conference chairman Masarat Alam Bhat, who is imprisoned in Delhi`s Tihar Jail


9. UAE airline to launch daily flights to Kabul

Air Arabia announced daily flights to Kabul on Wednesday, becoming the United Arab Emirates` second airline to serve the Afghan capital.
The Sharjah-based budget carrier will fly non-stop to and from Kabul once a day from Jan 10, it said in a statement.
The service is `a testament to our ongoing dedication to providing passengers with value-driven and affordable air travel, as well as new destinations to explore`, said group CEO Adel Al Ali


10. Oscar-winning Parasite actor found dead amid drugs probe

Lee Sun-kyun, a South Korean actor who drew global attention with his performance as the wealthy patriarch in the Oscar winning film Parasite, was found dead on Wednesday in an apparent suicide in a Seoul park, officials in the capital said.
Lee, 48, who met a gory end in the 2019 film, South Korea`s first to win any Oscar, had faced police questioning three times over accusations of illegal drug use amid a government crackdown, with one session running 19 hours over the weekend
