1. Islamabad turns down Indian call to hand over Hafiz Saeed

The Foreign Office on Friday officially declined India`s demand for the extradition of Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Saeed after New Delhi announced it had formally requested Islamabad to extradite him in a money laundering case.
Responding to media inquiries about India`s extradition request, Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch pointed out that `no bilateral extradition treaty exists between Pakistan and India`.
Saeed is currently serving a jail sentence after being convicted of terror financing in multiple cases


2. Pakistan declared `best performing` in tourism

Pakistan was the `best performing destination` in terms of tourism during the first nine months of 2023, according to the `World Tourism Barometer` published by the World Tourism Organisation of the United Nations.
Pakistan made a remarkable 92 per cent recovery to pre-pandemic levels in 2023, as the country experienced a 115 per cent surge in foreign tourist arrivals compared to the previous year, signaling a robust comeback post-Covid


3. Short-term inflation inches up to 43.2pc

The annual short-term inflation slightly rose to 43.25 per cent in the week ending on Dec 28, primarily fuelled by a massive increase in gas rates, official data showed on Friday.
With the latest reading, the weekly inflation remained above 41pc for the seventh week in a row, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
On an annual basis, the items whose prices increased the most included gas (1,109pc), cigarettes (93pc), chilli powder (81.7pc), wheat flour (73.8pc), garlic (70.7pc), tomatoes (65.3pc), IRRI-6/9 and broken basmati rice (58.5pc), gents sponge chappal (58pc) and sugar (54.3pc)

China named former navy chief Dong Jun as its new defence minister on Friday to replace the last minister who disappeared from public view four months ago.

South Africa asked the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday for an urgent order declaring that Israel was in breach of its obligations under the 1948 Genocide Convention in its crackdown against Hamas in Gaza.
The ICJ, also known as the World Court, is the United Nations venue for resolving disputes between states.
