1. Last steps to polls as campaigns end tonight

It will be curtains for all election campaigns tonight as a two-day moratorium on political activity goes into effect. The mandatory cooldown period before election day will begin as soon as the clock strikes midnight.
A senior official of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) shared with Dawn that the campaigning window will close at the stroke of midnight between February 6 and 7 under the country`s election laws. He warned that those violating the law may face imprisonment of up to two years


2. 10 personnel martyred as militants storm D.I. Khan police station

At least 10 police officials were martyred and six others injured in a predawn attack on Monday by dozens of militants on a police station in Dera Ismail Khan, as violence escalated ahead of general elections this week.
A spokesperson for Dera police said that militants, equipped with sophisticated weapons, attacked the Chaudhwan Police Station in Daraban tehsil at around 3am, adding that cops inside the building retaliated and a gun battle continued for around two and a half hours. The mili-tants escaped after the attack under the cover of darkness. Senior police officials, however, did not share details of the preliminary investigation into the assault, which came just three days ahead of the general election, scheduled for Feb 8 (Thursday).

3. Kamran appointed south Punjab IGP

The caretaker provincial government has appointed Kamran Khan, police officer of grade 21, as the new inspector general of police (IGP) of south Punjab police. MR Khan was previously serving as the additional IG of logistics and procurement.
The official announcement of his transfer and posting against an existing vacancy was made late on Saturday. Mr Khan was interviewed by Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and his appointment received approval from the Election Commission of Pakistan after a summary was presented

5. Caretakers make record borrowing from banks

The caretaker government of Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has made a record borrowing of almost Rs4 trillion from banks so far.
The economy, already crushed under a huge debt burden, may witness an unprecedented increase in borrowings at the end of 2023-24 on June 30 as the amount has already surpassed the total borrowed in the entire FY23

6. UN chief sets up body to probe Israeli allegations

9. Australian writer given suspended death sentence in China

Chinese Australian writer Yang Jun was on Monday handed a suspended death sentence for espionage in China, Beijing said, five years after he was detained on a rare visit to his homeland.
The Chinese-born Australian citizen has been in jail since 2019 on spying allegations and is said to be in ill health. The writer, whose pen name is Yang Hengjun, has denied the allegations, telling supporters he was tortured ata secret detention site and that he feared forced confessions may be used against him


10. British, Irish PMs in Belfast as power sharing resumes in Northern Ireland

The prime ministers of the UK and Ireland met Northern Ireland`s political leaders in Belfast on Monday to mark the return of power-sharing in the devolved province after a two-year impasse.
UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak arrived in the Northern Ireland capital on Sunday, a day after Sinn Fein`s Michelle O`Neill made history by becoming the province`s first Irish nationalist leader
