1. Tehran ties downgraded in wake of cross-border attack

Pakistan on Wednesday downgraded its diplomatic relations with Iran, recalling its ambassador from Tehran and expelling the Iranian envoy in Islamabad, in the wake of Iranian missile and drone strikes in Panjgur, Balochistan a day earlier.
Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said Pakistan reserved the right to retaliate against the attack, which she described as an `illegal act` and without any justification. In both statements issued after the attack, Ms Baloch warned Iran of the consequences of its action


2. Current account posts $397m surplus

Pakistan`s current account posted a significant surplus of $397 million in December 2023, bringing the entire second quarter of the current fiscal year FY24 into positive territory with a surplus of $198m.
The December surplus was primarily attributed to higher exports, increased remittances, and a significant decline in imports, helping the country gain control over the most pressing economic issue that had brought it to the brink of default at the beginning of FY24


3. Pak-Afghan trade suspended for five days amid claim of Rs2.5bn losses

The five days long suspension of Pak-Afghan trade via Torkham border have caused Rs2.5 billion losses in terms of imports from Afghanistan, while another $15 million is lost in export business, claim official sources.
Customs officials posted to Torkham told Dawn on condition of anonymity that the average income on items imported from Afghanistan as custom duties was Rs540 million on a daily basis, while they would also collect another $3 million as custom duties and other related charges from Pakistan`s export items


4. Avastin eye injection scam Punjab CM approves action against 18 health officials under Peeda Act

Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has accorded approval to initiate action under Peeda Act against 18 officers of grade 19, 18 and 17 of the Punjab health department in light of findings of an initial inquiry report launched in the wake of Avastin eye injection scam.
The officers punished by the government were serving as drugs controller, deputy drugs controller and drug inspectors in Lahore, Gujranwala, Kasur, Jhang, Rahim Yar Khan, Khanewal, Bahawalpur, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Rajanpur, Multan, Vehari districts

5. Tel Aviv steps up Gaza strikes after medicine-aid deal

Tel Aviv stepped up air strikes on Wednesday over the Gaza Strip`s south, where medicines were expected to be delivered for Israeli prisoners in exchange for humanitarian aid under a newly brokered deal.

The James Webb space telescope has discovered the oldest black hole ever detected, which was thriving so soon after the Big Bang that it challenges our understanding of how these celestial behemoths form, astronomers said on Wednesday.
The black hole was vigorously gobbling up its host galaxy just 430 million years after the birth of the universe during a period called the cosmic dawn, according to a study in the journal Nature
