1. Pakistan resolves to lower tensions with Iran

The National Security Committee (NSC), the country`s premier authority on security and foreign policy, on Friday ratified the move towards reducing tensions between Pakistan and Iran and underscored a commitment to addressing mutual security concerns.
The NSC`s meeting was convened to deliberate on the latest escalation with Iran following its cross-border strikes and Pakistan`s retaliatory attack


2. Border trade with Iran remains unaffected

Trade activities between Pakistan and Iran continued as usual, as both countries kept all their crossing points open despite the airspace violation by Iranian forces and the subsequent retaliatory strikes by Pakistani forces.
Officials said the tense situation was caused by the missile and drone attacks by the Iranian forces inside Pakistani territory and retaliation to the strikes, but both sides did not close their borders


3. Pakistan faced worst economic crisis in 2023, says HRW

Pakistan faced one of the worst economic crises in its history in 2023 with poverty, inflation and unemployment soaring, jeopardising millions of people`s rights to health, food and an adequate standard of living, according to a report by the Human Rights Watch.
In its 740-page `World Report 2024`, made available on Friday, the HRW reviewed human rights practices in more than 100 countries, and observed that the insistence of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on austerity and the removal of subsidies without adequate compensatory measures resulted in additional hardship for low-income groups in Pakistan


4. Textile exports rise to $1.39bn in December

The textile and clothing exports rebounded in December from the previous month`s downward trajectory, according to data issued by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) on Friday.
The sector expanded by 3.33 per cent, with exports reaching $1.39 billion, up from $1.35bn in the same month the previous year. Textile and garment exports fell by more than 7pc year-on-year in November

5. Gunfire, air strikes shake Khan Yunis as Israel pushes south

Gunfire and air strikes shook Gaza`s Khan Yunis city on Friday as Israel pressed its southward push in the besieged territory.
The Palestinian Red Crescent reported intense artillery fire near the city`s Al Amal hospital, while the Gaza Strip`s health ministry said 77 people were killed in Israeli bombardment on Thursday night and early Friday morning

6. North Korea claims testing underwater nuclear drone

North Korea has conducted a test of its underwater nuclear weapons system in protest against this week`s joint military drills by South Korea, the United States and Japan, Pyongyang`s KCNA news agency said on Friday.
The test of the Haeil-523 system, a name North Korea has given to its nuclear-capable underwater attack drones, was carried out by the defence ministry`s think tank in the waters off its east coast, the report said, without specifying a date


7. Japan becomes fifth state to put probe on moon

Japan became the fifth country to put a spacecraft on the moon on Friday, but the probe was not generating solar power, its space agency said, during a mission to prove a `precision` landing technology and revitalise a space programme that has suffered setbacks.
The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said its Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) landed on the moon`s surface at 1520 GMT and re-established communication with earth, but its solar panels were not able to generate electricity, possibly because they are angled wrong


8. UN official says Gaza detainees humiliated

A UN human rights official accused Israel on Friday of mistreating Palestinian detainees in Gaza, saying he had met men who had described being held for weeks, beaten and blindfolded.
Ajith Sunghay, a human rights official in Gaza, told reporters it was not clear exactly how many men had been detained by Israel since it began its military operation in the Palestinian enclave on Oct 7, but he said the number ran into the thousands


9. Britain bans Hizbut Tahrir as terrorist group

The UK government on Friday officially banned Islamist group Hizbut Tahrir, making it a criminal offence for the first time to belong to the group, or invite support for it.
The development marks a significant move against the group, which has been considered by the successive UK governments for a ban, and takes place after ministers criticised it over demonstrations held against Israeli strikes on Gaza

10. Under-fire Zaka leaves helm of Pakistan Cricket Board

Zaka Ashraf tendered his resignation as the Pakistan Cricket Board`s (PCB) Interim Management Committee (IMC) chairman on Friday, departing from his role 16 days prior to the scheduled completion of his extended three-month term, which commenced on November 4 last year.
The resignation, addressed to the patron-in-chief of PCB, Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar, was submitted shortly after Mr Ashraf had chaired his final IMC meeting. The committee granted approval to financial accounts and finalised the budget for the upcoming ninth edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL), set to kick off on February 17.
