1. ECP finally releases list of nominees for Feb 8 polls

With the general elections a little over two weeks away, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Sunday released the list of contesting candidates.
According to the E CP schedule, Jan 12 was the last date for withdrawal of candidature and publication of the revised list of candidates. However, it was delayed due to litigation.
On Feb 8, PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif and PTI`s former provincial health minister Dr Yasmin Rashid will face off in NA-130, Lahore, in a heated electoral battle. Mr Sharif is also contesting from NA-15 (Mansehra) where the opponents include Gustasif Khan of the PTI and JUIF`s Mufti Kifayatullah


2. WB closes $200m locust project

The World Bank has closed its locust emergency and food security (Leaf) project, for which it had approved $200 million, citing the performance of the project as highly unsatisfactory.
The project was approved in July 2020 and it was meant to control the locust outbreak, restore livelihoods in locust-affected areas, and strengthen national food security and monitoring in the country.
Informed sources believe the World Bank withdrew the project due to irregular appointments made under the project


3. Pak-S. Arabia joint military training begins

The joint military training of the Pakistan Army and Royal Saudi Land Forces, organised by the Multan Corps, commenced at Okara Garrison.
According to the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) news release on Sunday, the military forces of the two countries an exemplary military drill at the beginning of the joint training

8. French warship treats 1,000 injured Gazans off Egyptian shore

About 1,000 people from Gaza have been treated in a French field hospital aboard a ship off the coast of Egypt, its captain said, providing care for some as health infrastructure in the war-devastated enclave collapses.
The Dixmude, a French helicopter carrier, has been docked in the Egyptian port of al-Arish, 50 km west of the Gaza Strip, since November. The vessel is equipped with wards, operating theatres and 70 medical staff
