1. Army personnel to guard polling stations on Feb 8

The caretaker federal cabinet on Tuesday approved deployment of troops and civil armed forces personnel on polling stations and sensitive constituencies during Feb 8 general elections.
Sources told Dawn the interior ministry had moved a summary to the cabinet, suggesting the deployment of the army as a quick response force to maintain peace and security, ensuring a smooth and transparent electoral process


2. Section 144 imposed in Punjab

The caretaker Punjab government has imposed section 144 to prevent disturbance of public peace and tranquility in the province till Feb 12 in connection with the general elections 2024.
A notification issued by the Punjab home department here on Tuesday includes certain restrictions aimed at ensuring law and order before and after the elections across the province

3. Trade resumes as Torkham crossing reopens

Excitement and jubilation by the exhausted transporters marked the resumption of bilateral trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan via the Torkham border on Tuesday as Pakistan announced relaxation in visa condition for Afghan transporters till end of March.
Local custom clearing agents told Dawn that preference was given to vehicles loaded with perishable items which included oranges and potatoes from Pakistan side and onion from Afghan side


4. Cabinet sets four-day deadline for FBR revamp plan

The federal cabinet on Tuesday formed a new inter-ministerial committee to come up with final recommendations on restructuring the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) within a tight deadline of four days to minimise differences among different tax groups.
The proposed reforms were developed in closed-door consultation with a select group of people led by Caretaker Finance Minister Shamshad Akhtar. Instead of selecting a new minister to oversee the evolved plans, the federal cabinet reappointed Ms Shamshad to chair the inter-ministerial committee, sources in the tax machinery told Dawn


5. Shamshad again chosen for SSGCL board chair

While still in the government, the Petroleum Division has announced the nomination of Caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar as chairperson of the board of directors of the state-owned Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd (SSGCL) for another threeyear term.`In recognition of her professional dedication and unwavering efforts, the government had nominated Dr Shamshad Akhtar for another tenure as chairperson of the board of directors for which elections will be held`, said a statement issued by the Petroleum Division. She is already holding the same position on a temporary basis through repeated extensions while also working as finance minister

6. OIC denounces temple opening at Babri mosque site

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Tuesday denounced the construction and inauguration of the `Ram Mandir` built on the site of the five-century-old Babri Masjid in India`s Ayodhya.
At a grand event a day earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi consecrated the idol of Lord Ram at the new temple built on the site where the Babri Masjid stood for centuries before it was demolished by a Hindutva mob in 1992, according to a Dawn.com report


7. Israel suffers biggest blow since start of war on Gaza

Israel said on Tuesday 24 soldiers were killed in the biggest single-day losses since the start of its ground war in Gaza amid growing pressure on the government to find a way to end the conflict.
The heavy clashes came as a White House official was due in the region for talks aimed at securing more hostage releases, and as US media reported a new Israeli proposal for a deal that would involve a two-month pause in fighting


8. Russian missile barrage kills eight, sows panic in Ukraine

A wave of Russian missiles hit Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities on Tuesday, killing eight people and wounding dozens as new panic spread among exhausted residents.
Rescue workers in Kharkiv Ukraine`s second city that is near Russia`s border hauled survivors from smouldering piles of rubble as apartment blocks were set ablaze and toppled by the strikes, journalists reported


9. US envoy in ME for talks on longer pause in fighting

US Middle East envoy Brett McGurk is in Cairo and will travel in the region for `active` discussions on ensuring the release of prisoners held by Hamas in Gaza and securing a humanitarian pause, the White House said on Tuesday.
White House spokesperson John Kirby said the US would support a longer humanitarian pause in combat in Gaza to ensure prisoners could be released and aid brought in. He declined to specify a timeframe and cautioned he would not characterise the discussions as negotiations


10. Turkiye ratifies Sweden`s Nato membership

Turkiye`s parliament ratified Sweden`s Nato membership on Tuesday after more than a year of delays that upset Western efforts to show resolve in the face of the Ukraine crisis.
Lawmakers voted 28755 in favour of the Nordic nation`s bid to become the 32nd member of the alliance after it won the public backing of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan
