1. Ready to upgrade CPEC, says Beijing

China has said it is ready to work with Pakistan to upgrade the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and accelerate the building of an even closer China-Pakistan community with a shared future in the new era.
Separately, caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar said after having achieved the first phase of CPEC, Pakistan is benefiting from its early harvest projects while remaining engaged with China to execute the next phase


2. Gohar Ejaz gets additional charge of interior minister

With the general election just two weeks away, caretaker Minister for Commerce, Industries and Production Gohar Ejaz was given additional charge of the interior minister.
`The Prime Minister, in terms of rule 3(4) of the Rules of Business, 1973, has been pleased to assign the portfolio of Interior to Mr Gohar Ejaz, Federal Minister for Commerce, Industries & Production and Board of Investment, with immediate effect, says a notification issued by the cabinet division on Wednesday, a copy which is available with Dawn

3. Pakistan sets new targets for treatment of TB

Pakistan has set new targets for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) under which 528,600 cases have to be identified annually by 2026.
It was announced during a dissemination workshop for the National TB Strategic Plan 2024-26, chaired by Health Director General Dr Mohammad Ahmad Kazi, that the number of cases treated in 2022 would be increased from 424,559 to at least 528,600 by 2026.
For this purpose, it was decided to maintain TB treatment success rate at over 90 per cent from 2024 onwards

4. World court ruling in Gaza genocide case tomorrow

The UN`s top court said it would hand down its landmark ruling on Friday (tomorrow) in the case against Israel over genocide in Gaza, a verdict likely to be watched closely around the world.
The International Court of Justice in The Hague could potentially order Israel to stop its military campaign in Gaza.

5. Nato kicks off largest war games in decades

Nato on Wednesday began its biggest military exercise since the Cold War with a US warship leaving the United States for transit across the Atlantic to alliance territory in Europe.
The Western military alliance has said some 90,000 troops will take part in the months-long Steadfast Defender 24 exercise designed to test its defences in the face of Russia`s war on Ukraine

6. UN shelter hit by Israeli shelling in south Gaza

Tank shelling on a UN shelter on Wednesday killed at least nine people in Gaza`s main southern city of Khan Yunis, said the Gaza head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

8. Saudi Arabia to allow alcohol sales to non-Muslim diplomats

Saudi Arabia plans to allow alcohol sales to non-Muslim diplomats for the first time, two sources familiar with the plan said on Wednesday, modifying strict rules governing liquor in the conservative country.
Alcohol `will be sold to non-Muslim diplomats` who previously had to import alcohol via a diplomatic pouch, or sealed official package, one of the sources said


9. Sri Lanka passes new law to `regulate` social media

Sri Lanka`s lawmakers on Wednesday passed a bill to regulate online content, the speaker of the parliament announced, a law which opposition politicians and activists allege will muzzle free speech.
The Online Safety Bill proposes jail terms for content that a five-member commission considers illegal and making social media platforms such as Alphabet`s Google, Meta`s Facebook and X, formerly known as Twitter, liable for such content on their platforms
