1. Budget aims for trillion rupee tax revenue hike with `no new taxes`

• With Covid-19 as the context and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme as the yardstick, the government unveiled a budget built around austerity and belt-tightening and increasing tax revenue by over 27 per cent to Rs4.963 trillion, but without any discernible revenue plan behind it.
• `There are no new taxes in this budget, Minister for Industries and Production Hammad Azhar announced during his budget speech in the National Assembly.
• The speech was marred by loud protests from the opposition as well as a sparse attendance due to ongoing social distancing measures being observed in parliament.
• This is the first time in the country`s history that the budget speech was delivered by a minister wearing a face mask

2. Support package for health workers announced

• With the number of coronavirus cases and deaths increasing day by day across the country, the government on June 12, 2020 announced a comprehensive support package for frontline healthcare workers (HCWs).
• The country reported 5,689 Covid-19 cases and 86 deaths during the past 24 hours, taking the national tally of cases to 129,182 and fatalities to 2,495. A record number of 28,344 Covid-19 tests were conducted across the country in a single day.
• The support package has been announced following a hue and cry raised by health professionals as hundreds of HCWs have been infected with the deadly virus and several have sacrificed their lives

3. Govt proposes Rs1.29tr for defence spending

• The government on Friday proposed Rs1.29 trillion defence allocation for next fiscal year representing an 11.8 per cent increase over the original allocation for the outgoing year.
• Federal Minister for Industries Hammad Azhar, while presentingthe budget in the National Assembly, said `defence and internal security have been given adequate attention in the budget` The military had last year forgone a major hike because of the economic challenges then facing the country and settled for a raise of 4.74 per cent, but by the end of the year it had overshot the allocation by 6.33 per cent.
• The original allocation for last year was Rs1.15 trillion, but according to revised figures presented before the lower house of parliament, about Rs1.23 trillion had been spent. It has now virtually become a norm for actual defence spending incurred in a year to be higher than the original allocation.

4. Govt allocates Rs14bn for three Karachi hospitals

• After a decade, the federal government has finally allocated funds for three hospitals in Karachi the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) and National Institute of Child Health (NICH).
• According to the federal budget 2020-21 statement, the federal government has allocated Rs14.18 billion to run the three hospitals, including Rs9.242bn for the NICVD, Rs3.877bn for the JPMC and Rs1.07bn for the NICH.
• The highest chunk of the federal allocation for health sector has been reserved for the NICVD, with the allocation of Rs9.24bn meant to run the main NICVD centre in Karachi and its satellites and chest pain units in other parts of Sindh.

5. Two `Indian spies` arrested in Gilgit-Baltistan after crossing LoC

• Security forces arrested two Indian spies from an area along the Line of Control (LoC) and handed them over to the Gilgit-Baltistan police on June 12, 2020.
• Indian currency, identify cards and other documents have been seized from arrested spies.
• Gilgit SSP Raja Mirza Hassan produced the alleged spies before the media at a press conference. He said the duo belonged to India-occupied Kashmir and had been forcibly sent to Pakistan for spying. They were arrested soon after they crossed the LoC in Gilgit-Baltistan.
• The detained Indian spies introduced themselves as Noor Mohammad Wani and Feroze Ahmed Lone, residents of Achora village in tehsil Gurez of Bandipur district, India-occupied Kashmir. They said they had to enter Pakistan after being coerced by Indian army officers.

6. Telemedicine project launched in Balochistan

• Chief Minister Jam Kamal Khan Alyani has said that the provincial government has launched a telemedicine initiative in Balochistan and undertaken the pilot project to ensure provision of quality healthcare facilities to people.
• `The telemedicine project has been launched in all Basic Health Units across Balochistan while in the coming budget many areas will be connected and covered through the Health Department`s Pilot Project,` he said in a tweet while praising the efforts made by the Peoples Primary Health Initiative, Balochistan, in this regard.
• The government of Balochistan has decided to allocate a major share of the provincial budget 2020-21 for the health sector in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, which CM Alyani believes will help build the ramshackle health infrastructure

7. French nuclear submarine on fire at harbor

• Fire broke out onboard a nuclear submarine docked at the Mediterranean port of Toulon on June 12, 2020 and was still raging but under control by afternoon, local officials said.
• Nobody was hurt and no nuclear materials or weapons were on board the vessel, the Perle, which is in dry dock for repairs, the prefecture said in a statement.
• `The fire is under control.
• It will not spread, but it has not yet been put out,` a spokeswoman for the Mediterranean prefecture said

8. NASA names first woman to head human spaceflight

• The NASA official who managed the inaugural private crewed flight into space last month has been promoted to become the first female head of human spaceflight, the agency said on June 12, 2020, asitprepares to return people to the Moon in 2024.
• `Kathy Lueders has been selected to lead @NASA`s Human Exploration & Operations Mission Directorate,` NASA head Jim Bridenstine announced on Twitter.
• `Kathy has successfully managed both the Commercial Crew & Commercial Cargo programs and is the right person to lead HEO as we prepare to send astronauts to the Moon in 2024,` he added.
• Lueders, who joined NASA in 1992, oversaw the May 30 launch of two astronauts on a SpaceX rocket to the International Space Station the first ever crewed commercial flight into space

9. New spider species named after Greta

• Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg can add to her list of personal accolades, including TIME magazine`s Person of the Year, a group of spiders named after her.
• Thunberga gen. nov. is a new genus of huntsman spiders from Madagascar, described by German arachnologist Peter Jager, and named after the wunderkind in honour of her commitment to tackling climate change.
• `The rising temperatures affect all areas of nature including the endemic diversity and spider fauna of Madagascar,` said Jager, who has participated in several protests inspired by Thunberg`s School Strike for Climate

10. India call off Zimbabwe cricket tour

• India called off their cricket tour of Zimbabwe over the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) on June 12, 2020, a day after their upcoming trip to Sri Lanka was also cancelled.
• The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) added that it would not `rush into any decision` about resuming training camps for India`s players.
• After Sri Lanka`s board revealed that this month`s visit by India was off, the tour of Zimbabwe in August had also looked in jeopardy.
• `The Indian cricket team will not travel to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe owing to the current threat of Covid-19,` a BCCI statement said.
