6. MoU inked to launch mental health initiative in GB

• Charter for Compassion (CFC) Pakistan has signed a memorandum of understanding with Rupani Foundation (RF) to collaborate on the implementation of mental health programme `Ruhbaru compassionate mental well-being services` in Gilgit Baltistan.
• The programme will be initially piloted in Hunza and Ghizer districts.
• Two experienced mental health counsellors will be stationed in each district to provide counselling services to individuals facing mental health issues.
• A dedicated tele-helpline portal/ client application will offer assistance and support to those in need


7. Over 2m perished in climate-related disasters since 1970

• Over two million people have died in 11,778 reported climate-related disasters between 1970 and 2021, according to new data released by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).
• These extreme events have also resulted in economic losses of $4.3 trillion.
• The figures are part of the WMO`s `Atlas of Mortality and Economic Losses from Weather, Climate and Water-related Hazards`, and based on the data from the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters` Emergency Events Database


8. Russia says Ukrainian `saboteurs` on its soil; Kyiv refutes claim

• Russia said on May 22, 2023 it was battling a cross-border incursion by saboteurs who burst through the frontier from Ukraine, in what appeared to be one of the biggest attacks of its kind since the war began last year.
• The governor of Russia`s Belgorod region said a Ukrainian `sabotage group` had entered Russian territory in the Graivoron district bordering Ukraine, and was being repelled.
• But the Ukrainian outlet Hromadske cited Ukrainian military intelligence as saying two armed Russian opposition groups, the Liberty of Russia Legion and the Russian Volunteer Corps (RVC), both consisting of Russian citizens, had carried out the attack


9. Armenia ready to accept Karabakh as part of Azerbaijan conditionally

• Armenia is ready to recognise the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave as part of Azerbaijan if Baku guarantees the security of its ethnic Armenian population, the Russian state news agency TASS and the Russian news outlet Ostorozhno, Novosti quoted Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan as saying on May 22, 2023.
• Nagorno-Karabakh has been a source of conflict between the two Caucasus neighbours since the years leading up to the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, and between ethnic Armenians and Turkic Azeris for well over a century.
• In 2020, Azerbaijan seized control of areas that had been controlled by ethnic Armenians in and around the mountain enclave, and since then it has periodically closed the only access road linking Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia, on which the enclave relies for financial and military support


10. Taiwan excluded from WHO annual assembly

• Taiwan failed on May 22, 2023 in its efforts to gain an invitation to the World Health Organisation`s annual assembly despite the island`s assertion that support was growing for its participation.
• The annual assembly in Geneva decided not to extend Taiwan an invitation to the event, which runs from May 21-30. China and Pakistan urged members to reject Taiwan`s inclusion, while e Swatini and the Marshall Islands spoke in favour.
• China claims sovereignty over Taiwan and says the island is not a separate country but part of `one China` governed by Beijing. China`s insistence that Taiwan is not a country means that the island is excluded from many international organisations
