1. Punjab okays drug to treat Covid-19 patients

• The Punjab government has approved the use of Actemra, a life-saving drug, for treating critically ill Covid19 patients in the wake of a sudden rise in the death rate reported by state-run hospitals across the province.
• The 400mg injectable drug an interleulcin-6 inhibitor which goes by the generic name of tocilizumab will be pre-scribed to patients who develop lung complications and an abnormal level of IL-6 in the blood. The IL-6 is an endogenous scribed to patients who develop lung complications and an abnormal level of IL-6 in the blood. The IL-6 is an endogenous chemical which causes inflammation.
• The price of each dose of the drug (injection) is Rs60,000 and it will be given twice to patients under treatment at an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in a life threatening condition.


2. Pak Army shoots down Indian spying quad copter along LoC

• Pakistan Army on May 27, 2020 shot down an Indian spying quadcopter in Rakhchikri Sector along the Line of Control.
• According to Inter Services Public Relations, the quadcopter had intruded 650 meters on Pakistan’s side of the LoC. The ISPR Director General said that the intrusion by the Indian spying quadcopter is Saffron terrorism.
• In a tweet, Major General Babar Iftikhar said. “#PakistanArmy troops shot down an Indian spying #quadcopter in Rakhchikri Sector along LOC. The quadcopter had intruded 650 meters on Pakistan’s side of the #LOC.” According to the military sources, the Indian military uses quadcopters for aerial photography of Pakistani posts along the LoC as part of its intelligence-gathering operations and target selection before carrying out cross-LoC shelling

• Today Pakistan marks 22nd anniversary of its nuclear tests with the resolve that nuclear capability was meant only for peaceful purposes and to create a balance of power in the region amidst India’s incessant hostility.
• Youm-e-Takbeer (the day of greatness), on May 28 is celebrated throughout the country every year to elucidate country’s achievement in becoming a member of global nuclear club.
• On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted five successful nuclear tests in the north-western Chaghi district of Balochistan to deter continued aggressive posturing by its neighbour, India. Pakistan’s decision to test its nuclear weapons was in response to the six nuclear tests conducted by India in the second week of the same month of the same year


4. NDMA handed over task to eliminate locusts from country

• Prime Minister has handed a task to National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to eliminate locusts across the country after declaring national emergency against it.
• Locust had entered in the country in March 2019 and people were facing the situation bravely.
• Currently over 90,000 army officials were deputed to protect crops through fumigation campaign against locust attack on farmlands.
• Locusts had hit the country after twenty seven years after arriving from East Africa. It travelled about 170 kilometers distance every day and single locust gave births to about 200 children.


5. Trump offers mediation on China-India standoff

• US President Donald Trump on May 27, 2020 offered to mediate between India and China over their raging border dispute. The US President had offered to mediate on Kashmir dispute between Pakistan and India early this year.
• “We have informed both India and China that the United States is ready, willing and able to mediate or arbitrate their now raging border dispute. Thank you!” Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning.
• Trump’s offer came after Indian defence sources said hundreds of Chinese troops had moved into a disputed zone along with 3,500-km-long frontier in India-administered Kashmir’s Ladakh region.


6. US revokes Hong Kong special status as furor grows on China law

• The United States on May 27, 2020 revoked Hong Kong`s special status under US law, paving the way to strip trading privileges for the financial hub as Washington accused China of trampling on the territory`s autonomy.
• Hours before China`s rubberstamp parliament was set to take a key vote on a new Hong Kong security law that has sparked protests, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo certified to Congress that Hong Kong `does not continue to warrant treatment` under US laws that it has enjoyed even after its handover to China in 1997.
• Under a law passed last year to support Hong Kong`s prodemocracy protesters, the US administration must certify that the territory still enjoys freedoms promised by Beijing when negotiating with Britain to take back the colony.


7. France bans use of hydroxychloroquine to treat Covid-19 patients

• The French government said on May 27, 2020 that doctors should no longer prescribe hydroxychloroquine for Covid-19 patients, an unproven and potentially harmful treatment for the disease nonetheless promoted by US President Donald Trump.
• The move came after two French advisory bodies and the World Health Organisation (WHO) warned this week that the drug, a treatment for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, had been shown to be dangerous in several studies.
• Europe`s Discovery programme of hydroxychloroquine trials in several countries to gauge its effectiveness in the coronavirus fight have also been suspended since Sunday, France`s Inserm research institute said


8. Scientists warn of `zombie fires` in Arctic

• Dormant `zombie fires` scattered across the Arctic region remnants of record blazes last year may be coming to life after an unusually warm and dry Spring, scientists warned on May 27, 2020.
• `We have seen satellite observations of active fires that hint that `zombie` fires might have reignited,` said Mark Parrington, a senior scientist and wildfire expert at the European Union`s Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service.
• The hotspots, which have yet to be confirmed by ground measurements, are particularly concentrated in areas that burned last summer


9. Pentagon prepares for early pullout from Afghanistan

• US President Donald Trump has once again emphasised his commitment to withdraw troops from Afghanistan `as soon as possible,` causing the Pentagon to prepare for an early pullout, the US media reported on May 27, 2020.
• `We`re there 19 years and, yeah, I think that`s enough, and they (Afghans) understand,` President Trump said at a White House news briefing on Tuesday. `We`re really not acting as soldiers. We`re acting as police and we`re not sent there to be policemen.
• Asked if he plans to bring troops home from by Thanksgiving, Mr Trump said: `I have no target, but as soon as reasonable, over a period of time, but as soon as reasonable


10. Mothers shouldn`t stop breastfeeding due to virus fear: report

• With over 5.7 million people infected with the novel coronavirus across the globe and the baby food industry exploiting fears of the infection, a new report has advised mothers not to hesitate while breastfeeding babies as active virus has not, to date, been detected in breast milk.
• The report titled `Marketing of breast milk substitutes: national implementation of the international code` was released by the World Health Organisation (WHO), United Nations Children`s Fund (UNICEF) and International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN) on Wednesday.
• `It appears unlikely that Covid-19 would be transmitted through breastfeeding or by giving breast milk that has been expressed by a mother who is confirmed or suspected to have Covid19. Women with confirmed or suspected Covid-19 can therefore breastfeed if they wish to do so,` the report states
