1. ECP agrees to hold elections on Feb 8

After months of dilly-dallying on the issue of polls, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) agreed to hold general elections in the country on Feb 8 next year a date `set in stone`.
The announcement by the ECP came after a meeting between President Arif Alvi and Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, who visited the presidency with the ECP members, on the orders of the Supreme Court, which had taken up pleas regarding elections


2. Reforms on agenda as govt-IMF talks begin

The caretaker government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) kicked off the much-awaited loan review talks on a generally positive note on Thursday, setting the stage for a deep dive into forward-looking reforms under a nine-month bailout package, slated to be completed in March next year.
Caretaker Finance Minister Dr Shamshad Akhtar and the IMF`s mission chief for Pakistan, Nathan Porter, led their sides to the opening round of two-week-long negotiations to discuss the next tranche based on Pakistan`s performance in the first quarter that started in July


3. Govt exempts Afghan children, women from verification

As border managers buckle under the influx of Afghan refugees being sent back to Afghanistan, the federal government on Thursday eased one condition to facilitate the undocumented immigrants, particularly women and children, who are now exempted from data entry at the Nadra counters set up at the border crossings.
So far, 148,267 Afghan immigrants have left for Afghanistan during voluntary repatriation. On Thursday, a total of 19,344 undocumented immigrants left via Torkham


4. World Bank commits to strengthening BISP

World Bank has reiterated its commitment to support the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) social protection system in order to strengthen and financially empower the marginalised segments of society and ensure relief to the poorest of the poor.
A high-level delegation of the bank had a meeting with BISP Chairperson Dr Amjad Saqib at the BISP headquarters here on Thursday


5. IFC unveils $1.5bn investment plan for Pakistan

The Board of Investment and the World Bankaffiliate International Finance Corporation unveiled a visionary investment plan, for which the IFC committed to inject over $1.5 billion into Pakistan`s economy in the form of short and long-term investments aimed at catapulting the country into a new era of prosperity and development, BoI announced on Thursday.
The pledge follows the IFC`s successful mobilisation of $1.5bn FY23, marking a significant doubling of investments in Pakistan compared to the previous year

6. Hundreds more flee Gaza as death toll tops 9,000

Hundreds of foreigners and dual nationals fled the Gaza Strip for Egypt on Thursday as Israeli forces bombarded and fought ground battles in the besieged Palestinian territory, where thousands have died since Oct 7.
Egypt said it eventually plans to help evacuate 7,000 foreigners through the Rafah crossing and a spokesperson for the Palestinian side of the border post said about 100 had been able to leave on Thursday. Almost 400 foreign passport holders as well as 60 severely wounded Palestinians in ambulances crossed by the end of the second day of departures, the spokesperson said


7. Turkiye ready to take cancer patients from Gaza hospital

Turkiye is ready to take in cancer patients from Gaza`s Turkish-Palestinian Friendship hospital, which went out of service on Wednesday after running out of fuel, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said on Thursday.
Health officials said that the hospital, which was the only cancer treatment hospital in the Gaza Strip, had to shut down amid Israel`s bombardment of the enclave


8. Bahrain halts trade ties with Israel; envoys return

Bahrain`s parliament said on Thursday that the Gulf state`s ambassador to Israel had returned home and economic ties had been suspended in protest over the Israeli aggression in Gaza.
However, the government did not confirm the moves, and Israel said it had received no word of any such actions, saying its relations with Bahrain were `stable`


9. US Senate resolution urges end to religious discrimination in India

A resolution moved in the US Senate urges the Biden administration to engage with India and demand a swift end to the persecution of, and violence against, religious minorities and human rights defenders.
The resolution, moved this week by Senator Tammy Baldwin, also demands the reversal of policies that discriminate against Muslims and Christians and an end to violence against peaceful civilian protesters in India
