1. Cops repulse terror strikes on two checkpoints

Though significant casualties were averted, militants again struck security personnel in Dera Ismail Khan their fourth such attack within 48 hours in the district which has increasingly become vulnerable to assaults.
Three provinces Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab witnessed major terrorist strikes over the past three days in which 17 troops and five civilians lost their lives and at least 24 others, including police personnel, suffere d injuries.
At least 10 attackers were killed by security personnel.


2. US move to stop deportation of 25,000 Afghan workers

The United States embassy has issued letters to over 25,000 Afghan nationals under the process of relocation to and resettlement in America and shared their names with authorities in Pakistan, diplomatic and other sources told Dawn.
However, these Afghan nationals face an uncertain future as Pakistan has raised objections over the list, according to a senior Interior Ministry official. At present, these Afghan nationals are living in Pakistan, awaiting resettlement in the US


3. CM approves Rs2bn for upgrade of all police stations in Punjab

Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi has approved Rs2bn for Special Initiative Police Stations (SIPS) project for upgrade of all 737 police stations of the province.
The Punjab Police had launched the SIPS project in 2020 to provide the citizens with quick relief, change the `Thana culture` and strengthen the trust between the public and police.
The project includes building model police stations divided into two parts with effective use of modern technology


4. After $18bn loss, govt to reassess PSM liabilities

After removing Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) from the privatisation list, the government has assigned its management consulting to Pakistan Institute of Management (PIM) to re-evaluate core and non-core assets along with legal, fiscal and human resource liabilities, but not before losing more than $18 billion in over eight years of closure.
`The purpose of this (Management Consulting) assignment is to assess and report on various aspects of PSM`s operation including housing societies, contractual agreements, legal matters, human resources, assets and inventory,` said an office order issued by the Ministry of Industries and Production (MOIP)


5. Over 170,000 Afghans left since Sept 17: officials

More than 6,500 Afghan nationals left Pakistan through the Torkham border on Sunday, taking the number of repatriated Afghans to over 170,000, according to border officials.
The voluntary evacuation has been going on since the government gave an ultimatum to all unregistered foreign nationals to leave Pakistan by Oct 31, after which action would be taken against them as per law

6. Russian N-sub test launches intercontinental missile

Russia`s new strategic nuclear submarine, the Imperator Alexander III, has successfully tested a Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile, the Russian defence ministry said on Sunday.
The missile, which the Federation of American Scientists says is designed to carry up to six nuclear warheads, was launched from an underwater position in the White Sea off Russia`s northern coast and hit a target thousands of kilometres away on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Russian Far East, the defence ministry said


7. House-to-house combat in Gaza as siege tightened

`An Israeli air strike targeted my neighbours` house in Al-Maghazi camp, my house next door partially collapsed,` said Mohammed Alaloul, 37, a journalist working for the Turkish Anadolu Agency. He told AFP the bombing killed four of his children as well as four of his brothers and several of his nieces and nephews.
Since Israel sent ground forces into the north of Gaza late last month, `over 2,500 terror targets have been struck` by `ground, air and naval forces`, the army alleged on Sunday.


8. Australia seeks to work constructively with China

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese vowed on Sunday to `work constructively` with China as the two countries seek to thaw icy relations.
He was speaking at the opening of the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai on the first full day of a high profile state visit to his country`s biggest trading partner.
`Constructive economic engagement between countries helps to build relationships… that is why the government that I lead will continue to work constructively with China,` Albanese said in a speech


9. Poppy growth down 95pc in Afghanistan since Taliban ban, says UN

Poppy cultivation and opium production have plunged 95 per cent in Afghanistan since Taliban authorities banned the crop, according to a UN report published on Sunday.
Since returning to power in 2021, Taliban authorities have vowed to end illegal drug production in Afghanistan and in April 2022 banned the cultivation of the poppy plant, from which opium and heroin are made
