5. HEC finally gets executive director after five years

After a delay of about five years and several stop-gap appointments, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) on Monday appointed former vice-chancellor of Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) Dr Ziaul Qayyum as the executive director of the HEC.
Shortly after the notification of the new executive director`s appointment was issued, Dr Qayyum took charge as the new ED. He has previously served as the vice-chancellor of the AIOU and the University of Gujrat. He has also to his credit the establishment of the campus of FAST National University in Faisalabad

6. UN observes minute`s silence for 101 staffers killed in Gaza

United Nations workers observed a minute`s silence and flags flew at half-mast at UN compounds across the globe on Monday to honour the more than 100 employees killed since hostilities began in Gaza last month, the largest death toll of workers in the organisation`s 78-year history. In Gaza City, witnesses reported intense overnight air strikes with Israeli tanks and armoured vehicles just metres from the Al Shifa hospital.
Health authorities said hospitals in northern Gaza were no longer functioning amid fuel shortages and raging combat


7. Three killed in Russian attack on Kherson

Russian attacks on Ukraine`s southern region of Kherson on Monday killed three civilians and injured 15, including a two-month-old child, officials said.
Two were killed a 62-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man in a `massive` Russian attack of rocket and artillery fire on the city centre in the early afternoon, Kherson`s governor Oleksandr Prokudin said in a statement


8. Negotiations start in Nairobi over global plastics treaty

Nations grappling with the plastic `suffocating` nature and leaching into food and the human body began fresh negotiations on Monday towards a UN treaty to tackle the growing problem.
Some 175 countries agreed last year to conclude by 2024 a binding agreement to combat the plastic pollution littering oceans, mountain tops, and even blood and breast milk


9. Jordanian king rejects any Israeli plan to occupy parts of Gaza

Jordan`s King Abdullah rejected any plans by Israel to occupy parts of Gaza or to create security zones within the enclave, saying the root cause of the crisis was Israel`s denial of Palestinians` `legitimate rights`, state media said on Monday.
In comments he made at the royal palace, the king was quoted as telling senior politicians that there could be `no military or security solution` between Israel and the Palestinians
