1. Success in IMF review set to unlock $700m

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Wednesday reached a staff-level agreement with Pakistan on the first review of a short-term loan deal, which will unlock about $700 million next month.
The funds to be issued are a second tranche of the nine-month bailout package and are subject to approval from the IMF`s executive board, the lender said in a statement.
This will bring total disbursements under the $3 billion package, approved in July, to almost $1.9bn


2. Govt okays 40pc tax on banks` windfall income

The caretaker government imposed a one-off 40 per cent tax on bank profits reaped from foreign exchange transactions in the past two years, a measure the previous coalition administration also considered but failed to implement.
The federal cabinet`s approval of the windfall tax came after strong criticism of banks that they had earned a hefty Rs110 billion in profits in 2021 and 2022 from the speculative rupee-dollar trade. The decision was not in line with analysts` expectations as most considered the tax imposition less likely


3. WHO forms 11-member commission to combat loneliness

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced the `Commission on Social Connection` to address loneliness as a pressing health threat, promote social connection as a priority, and accelerate the scaling up of solutions.
Senior Pakistani Advocate and Human Rights Defender Hina Jillani has also been nominated as one of the 11 commissioners from across the globe


4. Israelis `withdraw` after West balks at hospital raid

An Israeli army operation in Gaza`s biggest medical facility on Wednesday set off a wave of international condemnation, with even Tel Aviv`s staunchest supporters criticising the move, as the World Health Oragnisation said it had lost contact with staff at the hospital.

5. Qatar seeks deal for prisoners` release, three-day truce

Qatari mediators were on Wednesday seeking to negotiate a deal between Hamas and Israel that includes the release of around 50 prisoners from Gaza in exchange for a three-day ceasefire, an official briefed on the negotiations said.
The deal, under discussion, which has been coordinated with the US, would also seek rael release some Palestinian women and children from Israeli jails and increase the amount of humanitarian aid allowed into Gaza, the official said

6. US claims shooting down drone from Yemen

A US Navy warship shot down a drone in the Red Sea that emanated from Yemen, two US officials said on Wednesday, in what appeared to be only the second time the United States has brought down projectiles near its warships since the Gaza crisis began.
The officials said the Thomas Hudner, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, took down the drone early in the morning

Pakistan cricket`s overhaul in the aftermath of a disastrous World Cup campaign began in earnest on Wednesday when under-fire skipper Babar Azam quit the national team`s leadership in all three formats, with his replacements named soon afterwards.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed opener Shan Masood as Test captain, gave pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi the T20 reins, and replaced team director Mickey Arthur with former captain Mohammad Hafeez
