1. Two militants killed as gun attack on Mianwali post repelled

In a gun battle that lasted all night, police thwarted an ambush by more than a dozen militants on a police post in Mianwali killing two of the attackers, officials said.
The ambush comes on the heels of back-to-back terrorist attack in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa that claimed scores of lives since Friday.

2. Pakistan emerges as top IDA borrower in 2023

Pakistan was the top borrower of the International Development Association (IDA) in fiscal year 2023, securing $2.3 billion in funding, the World Bank said in its annual report.
The bank helped Pakistan respond to devastating noods with nearly $1.7bn for five projects in the worst-affected Sindh province to build resilient housing, restore crop production, provide health services for mothers and children, and strengthen social protection and the local government`s disaster response capacity


3. Pakistanis among 40 nations facing backlash for reporting rights abuses

Pakistan is among the 40 countries across the world where over 220 individuals and 25 organisations faced threats and retaliation from the state and non-state actors for cooperating with the United Nations on human rights, reveals a new report of the UN Secretary-General.
The report titled, `Cooperation with the United Nations, its representatives and mechanisms in the field of human rights` covering the period from May 1, 2022 to April 30, 2023, was recently presented at the Human Rights Council (HRC) session in Geneva. The session will continue till Oct 6.


4. Punjab to offer subsidy on canola cultivation

The Punjab government has decided to promote oil seeds cultivation in the province by offering subsidy to farmers in a bid to cut the country`s edible oil import bill, and improve their incomes by encouraging cultivation of nonconventional crops.
Foreign currency-starved Pakistan had imported edible oil, mostly palm oil, worth US$4.5 billion in 2022


5. Balochistan govt declares `all-out war` against terrorists

Two days after the deadly suicide blast in Mastung, the caretaker Balochistan government declared an `all-out war` against terrorists with the support of armed forces.

A move in the US Congress to prohibit assistance to Pakistan has been defeated by a clear majority as American lawmakers underlined the importance of their bilateral ties with Islamabad.

The European Union launched on Sunday the first phase of the world`s first system to impose CO2 emissions tariffs on imported steel, cement and other goods as it tries to stop more polluting foreign products from undermining its green transition.

A United Nations mission visited Nagorno-Karabakh on Sunday, Azerbaijan said, after almost the entire ethnic-Armenian population fled since Baku recaptured the breakaway enclave.
An Azerbaijani presidency spokesman said that a `UN mission arrived in Karabakh on Sunday morning` mainly to assess humanitarian needs
