1. 15pc water shortage expected in Rabi season
- Even though it is in a better position than last year and 10-year average availability, the country is estimated to face 15 per cent water shortage during the ongoing Rabi season that began on October 1.
- `The basin-wise shortage for Rabi 2023-24 was approved at 15pc,` said the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) after a meeting of its advisory committee presided over by its chairman Asjad Imtiaz Ali on Monday
2. Strategy developed to prevent malnutrition among women
- The Ministry of National Health Services (NHS) with technical support from Nutrition International has developed and launched a national social and behaviour change (SBC) strategy to protect and promote healthy diets, practices and services among women of the country.
- The focus will be on preventing all forms of malnutrition among women during the preconception, pregnancy and postpartum stages of nutritional vulnerability. The strategy will support the roll-out of the Pakistan Maternal Nutrition Strategy (PMNS) of the ministry of NHS and address the behavioural determinants of maternal nutrition, identified in the PMNS
3. Serving general becomes Nadra chairman
- Lt Gen Muhammad Munir Afsar on Monday became the first serving military officer to be appointed chairman of the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra).
- `In exercise of powers conferred under section 3 (3) of the National Database and Registration Authority Ordinance 2000, read with Rule 7A of Nadra (Appointment and Emoluments of Chairman and Members) Rules, 2020, the federal government has been pleased to appoint Lieutenant General Muhammad Munir Afsar as Chairman Nadra in terms of Section 3 (5) of Nadra Ordinance, 2000, with immediate effect and until further orders,` said a notification issued by the interior ministry
4. SalamAir`s inaugural flight lands at Peshawar airport
- A Qatar-based airline`s inaugural flight landed at the Peshawar`s Bacha Khan International Airport early on Monday.
- The first flight of SalamAir from Muscat to Peshawar touched down at the airport at 3.13am.
- The airline also plans to operate seven weekly flights to Karachi and three each to Multan and Sialkot
5. US offers to help Pakistan deal with terrorism
- The United States on Monday offered to work with Pakistan on strategies that can better assist the country`s efforts to counter all forms of violent extremism.
- Asked to comment on recent terrorist attacks that killed scores of people across Pakistan, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller noted that both countries have continued to face various acts of terrorism, targeting innocent civilians.
- Extending `deepest sympathies` for those killed and injured in those attacks, the US official noted that Pakistanis had suffered tremendously from terrorist attacks

6. US, Hungarian duo win Nobel for Covid vaccine research
- Researchers Katalin Kariko and Drew Weissman won the Nobel Medicine Prize on Monday for work on messenger RNA (mRNA) technology that paved the way for ground-breaking Covid-19 vaccines.

8. EU assures Kyiv of support after first meeting outside bloc`s borders
- The European Union signalled its long-term support for Ukraine on Monday as its foreign ministers convened in Kyiv for a historic first gathering outside the bloc`s borders.

9. Pakistani climbers summit Cho Oyu
- Pakistani climbers Naila Kiani and Sirbaz Khan summited Cho Oyu, the world`s sixth highest peak (8,201 metres), in Tibet, China, on Monday.
- Young Pakistani climber Shehroze Kashif has also reached the Cho Oyu base camp to start his ascent. The three climbers previously scaled Manaslu (8,163m) in Nepal on Sept 20 and 21
10. Pakistan thrash WI to take Over 40s crown
- Hosts Pakistan emerged world champions by overpowering West Indies by 152 runs in the final of the inaugural Over 40s Cricket Global Cup at the National Bank Stadium Karachi.
Skipper Misbah-ul-Haq`s fluent century enabled Pakistan to post an imposing total of 328-4 in the allotted 45 overs which they defended quite comfortably by bowling their opponents out for 176 in 38.5 overs with spinner Abdul Qadir picking up six wickets for 35 runs
