1. Big drop in fuel rates a silver lining for inflation-hit masses

For the second fortnight in a row, the Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar`s government reduced petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) prices for the next 16 days, ending Oct 31, as a result of decline in the international market and an appreciation in the rupee`s value.
The petrol price was cut by Rs40 per litre, and HSD lowered by Rs15 per litre. As a result, the ex-depot price of petrol fell to about Rs284 per litre. However, the government raised the petroleum levy on HSD by Rs5, reaching a historic high of Rs55 per litre, just below the Rs60 maximum permissible limit under the law.

5. China supports Palestinians

China supports the `just cause of the Palestinian people in safeguarding their national rights`, Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Iranian counterpart on Sunday as Beijing took a clear stance on the Israel-Gaza situation.
China, which has close ties with Iran, has increasingly positioned itself as a mediator in the Middle East, but has been criticised by Western officials for not condemning Hamas.
`The root cause… of the Palestine-Israel situation is that the Palestinian people`s right to statehood has been set aside for a long time, Wang said in a call with Iran`s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Sunday, according to an official Chinese readout

6. Barbaric Israeli bombing creates `million refugees`

More than one million people have been displaced by sustained Israeli bombardment in the Gaza Strip over the past week, the UN said on Sunday, as it termed the situation in the besieged enclave an `unprecedented human catastrophe`.
Seven days of relentless bombing have left almost 2,500 people dead, the majority ordinary Palestinians. Another 10,000peoplehavebeenwounded.
Meanwhile, UN Security Council members held difficult talks on a possible resolution, with two drafts one from Russia and another from Brazil currently on the negotiating table, diplomats said

7. US Congress handcuffed by Republican feud amid international crises

As the flames of war burn in the Middle East and Ukraine, the US Congress is immobilised by a brawl among Republicans, a dysfunction that even some in Donald Trump`s party worry is giving comfort to the nation`s adversaries.
The House of Representatives has drifted leaderless for 12 days since eight of its 221 Republicans ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
That has held up any legislative action, from debating further aid to Ukraine as it battles a Russian invasion to a statement of support for ally Israel

8. Poland votes in `most important election since communism

Poles voted on Sunday in parliamentary elections that will determine the country`s future ties with the European Union and neighbouring Ukraine, as the ruling populists bid for a third consecutive term in power.
Opinion polls indicate the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party will get the most votes but may struggle to build a governing coalition, giving a chance to the opposition led by former EU chief Donald Tusk. A PiS victory could exacerbate tensions with the EU and Ukraine and will dismay campaigners concerned about the future of media freedoms, women`s and migrants` rights
