1. Kashmir resolution adopted in Senate without discussion

The Senate in its first sitting since installation of the caretaker set-up in the country on Friday unanimously passed a resolution `condemning India over brutal state terrorism` in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, but without holding a debate on the matter after the senators decided not to take up any agenda item to pay homage to two colleagues, who died recently.
The upper house of parliament had been requisitioned to discuss the Gaza situation after the government showed reluctance in calling the regular session, but Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani at the outset announced that members would only be allowed to deliver speeches to pay tribute to the late PML-N Senator Rana Maqbool Ahmed and former Senator S.M. Zafar


2. More crossings opened to speed up deportation drive

As the government-ordained deadline for the deportation of illegal immigrants mostly Afghans draws near, authorities have intensified their efforts by setting up `holding centres`, and opening additional border crossing points to speed up the repatriation process.
To expedite the repatriation of undocumented foreigners to Afghanistan and Iran, the Balochistan government is opening three more crossing points
3. PM`s aide resigns to join World Bank
Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister (PSPM), Dr Syed Taugir Shah, has resigned from his post to join the World Bank as its executive director from Nov 1.
The Establishment Division said Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has accepted Dr Shah`s resignation. `The Prime Minister has been pleased to accept resignation tendered by Dr Syed Taugir Shah (PAS/BS-22/Retired) from the post of Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister with effect from October 31, 2023,` the notification said


4. ECC okays Rs8bn for two A320 aircraft

In a significant development, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet on Friday green-lighted a hefty sum of Rs8 billion for the purchase and repatriation of two Airbus A320 aircraft, which have been grounded in Jakarta since September 2021.
The ECC meeting chaired by Finance Minister Shamshad Akhtar approved bridge financing through the Civil Aviation Authority`s resources for Pakistan International Airlines(PIA) to meet emergent requirements of the airline related to overdue payments


5. Nighat Dad joins UN chief`s AI advisory board

Prominent rights activist Nighat Dad has joined the United Nations secretary general`s advisory board on Artificial Intelligence to `address the overarching theme of addressing global governance of AI`.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the creation of the 39-member advisory body on Thursday

6. Gaza`s voice falls silent as Israel steps up ground assault

Social media and the internet, the last means of communication the people of the besieged Gaza Strip had with the outside world, was severed on Friday as broadband and mobile phone services were cut off.
The disconnection of the Palestinian enclave meant that as the bombing of Gaza entered its 21st day fresh photos, videos and other information regarding brutal Israeli actions against the territory were no longer coming through.
The isolation of Gazans came as Israel`s air and ground forces stepped up operations in the Gaza Strip, Israel`s chief military spokesperson said on Friday, amid reports of heavy bombing of the besieged enclave


7. UNGA adopts resolution for truce in Gaza

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on Friday that calls for an `immediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce` in Gaza by 120 to 14 votes, with 45 abstentions.
The United States was among the 14 countries that opposed the resolution.
Canada, however, proposed an amendment condemning Hamas for the Oct 7 attacks, but failed to get the required two-thirds of the present votes


8. Sultan Ibrahim elected Malaysia`s next king

Malaysia`s royalty on Friday chose an influential sultan from the southern state of Johor to be the country`s next king.
The position is largely ceremonial, but oversees major appointments such as the prime minister and serves as the head of religious affairs and the commander-inchief of its armed forces


9. US claims hitting `Iran-backed groups in eastern Syria

Two US fighter jets have struck military infrastructure in eastern Syria, which were linked to Iran`s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and its regional proxies, the Pentagon said on Friday.
Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said the strikes were in response to recent attacks on US bases in `Iraq and Syria by Iranian-backed militia groups
